In the early 1980s, as Iran’s nascent Islamic regime was battling for survival in a war with Iraq, Mohsen Rezaei made his name on the front lines as a young and hawkish commander of the newly formed Revolutionary Guards.
While other leaders pushed for a settlement, Rezaei argued that Iran should fight on — even after it recaptured territory seized by the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. Tehran and Baghdad finally agreed a ceasefire in 1988, both countries worn down by the devastating conflict.
Nearly four decades later, Rezaei is once again poised to fight an existential battle for the Islamic republic. Appointed secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the 71-year-old hardliner is now in effect the republic’s top security official — with a critical voice in determining the trajectory of war with the US.

Sweden’s prime minister has called Spain’s amnesty for irregular immigrants a “very bad idea”, warning that it could push Europe back to a 2015-style migration crisis and call into question the continent’s free-movement zone.
Ulf Kristersson, the Swedish centre-right leader running for re-election next month, told the FT that Spain’s amnesty for more than 1mn people had caused a “pretty big outcry” at the last meeting of EU leaders as it ran counter to what other countries were trying to achieve.
Leaders from Italy, Germany and Denmark among others have been sharply critical of Spain after tens of thousands of people entered the Spanish exclave of Ceuta last month, even though the vast majority returned to Morocco within hours.

Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea’s biggest defence company, has made a preliminary bid of up to $1.2bn for Austal’s US shipbuilding unit as it seeks to expand its role in America’s naval supply chain.
Austal said on Tuesday it would allow Hanwha to conduct four weeks of due diligence to strengthen its offer for the US business, which sells ships to the navy and coastguard.
The bid comes after several unsuccessful attempts by the South Korean group to acquire Austal, Australia’s largest shipbuilder. Last year, Canberra allowed Hanwha to double its stake in Austal to 19.9 per cent but set limits on its influence over one of Australia’s most important defence companies.
