Dear editor,
I am a Senior 3 student. Knowing that learning English is going to launch an activity to encourage students to
improve their oral English, I strongly recommend holding an English speech contest, which I think will obviously
be helpful.
First of all, when preparing for the English speech contest, students have to write the draft by their own,
while singing English songs, they just don’t have to. On the other hand, singing English songs is definitely
different from oral English expression. In the meanwhile, English speech contest can be really beneficial to
students’ oral English.
I would really appreciate it if you can take my opinion into consideration.

By then, the crowd on the hill had thinned as people went home for lunch. Finally, it got down to the man and
his son, Erica and me and a handful of others. He can’t still be thinking the boy is going to crash into some, I
thought. And surely even though the child is small, he could pull his own sled up the hill once in a while. But the
man never get tired, and his attitude was bright and cheery and the boy never climbed up the hill on his own.
Finally, I could stand it no longer. I looked over at him, praising that how energetic he was! The man looked

W: When I started learning Chinese, I was horrified to hear that it would take me 10 years to become fluent.
Another 17 years later I’m still working at it. Due to my work on television, some Chinese language learners may
consider me a role model of sorts, but every day I’m reminded of what I don’t know and how much more there is
to learn.
Who cares how long it takes? Just do it! If you really want to learn Chinese, you will devote yourself to it
however long it takes. Gaining fluency in Chinese is a difficult practice. All manner of things affect how long it
will take, from time and dedication, classes you take, to finding a good teacher. Fluency has a different definition
in most people’s minds. For the sake of this answer, I am going to consider fluency the ability to read and
understand newspapers, as well as engage in complex conversation without looking at the words.
