Every year, TIME highlights inventions that are making the world better, smarter and even a bit more fun. Here
are some selected ones that will absolutely blow your kids’ mind.
Sphero Indi ($124.99)
Coding is a matter of problem-solving and pattern recognition. Sphero Indi teaches both, no screen required.
Instead, kids use different-colored cards to move a robotic car from point A to B — green cards increasing its speed,
pink cards telling it to turn left, and so on. “We really wanted to bring these abstract concepts into the physical world,”
says Jeff Wiencrot, one of the product developers.
Thames & Kosmos Mega Cyborg Hand ($39.95)
The effort to get kids interested in science just got a helping hand — a cyborg hand, to be precise. Kids build a
robotic arm that copies their hand gestures, while they learn about engineering and robotics. Once assembled (组装)
and slipped on like a glove, the device passes forces from the user’s fingers to the extended ones of the robotic hand.
Sproutel Purrble ($49.99)
For children who are upset for some reason, Purrble comes to their rescue. An interactive toy equipped with seven
sensors that respond to touch, Purrble’s heartbeat speeds up when it senses somebody’s playing with it. Kids can then
comfort their companion with gentle petting, slowing Purrble’s rapid heartbeat to a purr ( 咕噜声) — calming
themselves as well in the process.
Lego recycled brick (Unpriced)
The Lego Group, intending to make all Lego bricks from sustainable resources by 2030, spent the past three years
testing different recycled PET plastic materials, and finally developed its first recycled PET brick that is nearly
identical to the usual brick. The Danish toy company hopes to integrate the recycled blocks into Lego sets in the next
18 to 24 months.
21.What do Sphero Indi and Thames & Komos Mega Cyborg Hand have in common?
A.They train kids in programming. B.They are invented by kids.
C.They need fitting together first. D.They combine fun with learning.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司22.Which invention best suits kids who need emotional comfort?
A.Sphero Indi. B.Sproutel Purrble.
C.Thames & Kosmos Mega Cyborg Hand D.Lego recycled brick.
23.What makes Lego recycled brick special?
A.It is environmentally friendly. B.It can be mass-produced.
C.It looks distinct from the usual one. D.It is a solution to testing.

Live with roommates? Have friends and family around you? Chances are that if you’re looking to live a more
sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon.
I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents,
and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I’ve learned a few things
along the way though, which I hope you’ll find encouraging if you’re doing your best to figure out how you can make
the change in a not-always-supportive household.
Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea
Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I
came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars
everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging.
Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own
bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn’t need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start
personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the
cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won’t entirely make the switch, but you may have
some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire.
As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on
what you’re doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board,
your words probably won’t do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged.
So here is my advice: Lead by action.
24.What do the underlined words “jump on that bandwagon” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Share an apartment with you. B.Join you in what you’re doing.
C.Transform your way of living. D.Help you to make the decision.
25.What was the attitude of the author’s father toward buying groceries with jars?
A.He disapproved of it. B.He was favorable to it.
C.He was tolerant of it. D.He didn’t care about it.
26.What can we infer about the author?
A.She is quite good at cooking. B.She respects others’ privacy.
C.She enjoys being a housewife. D.She is a determined person.

B.How to have one’s own personal space at home.
C.How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household.
D.How to control the budget when buying groceries.

To most of us, school means classes, teachers, schedules, grades and tests. But for the children at Sudbury Valley
School, Massachusetts, school is very different.
Firstly, there are no lessons. All the children, aged between 4 and 19, do whatever they want to. There are no
teachers—only “staff (员工) members”. The idea behind this is that you do not need to make children learn, because
children want to learn anyway. “You do not need to say to a three-year-old, ‘Go to explore your environment.’ You
can’t stop him or her!” says Daniel Greenberg, a founder of the school. “But if you make children do what you want all
day, they will lose all taste for learning and can’t realize their potential.”
At Sudbury Valley School, you will permit children to talk, read, paint, cook, work on computers, study French,
play the piano, climb trees, or just run around. Two boys spent three years just fishing!
The other way in which Sudbury Valley School is different is that the children can decide the rules. Every week,
there is a school meeting where both children and staff have one vote each—even the four-year-olds. They decide the
school rules, how to spend the school budget (预算), and even which staff members they want and do not want any
more.
When the school first opened in 1968, people said it would never work. But today, the school has 200 students,
and 80% of its students go on to college. Even the two boys who went fishing all the time have successful careers
today. One of them is a musician and the other is a computer scientist.
28.What is the main topic of the article?
A.Children’s hobbies.
B.An unusual school.
C.A school without rules.
D.Education in the US.
29.What does the school believe?
A.Children learn best when they do what they want to do.
B.Teachers cannot teach children well.
C.Learning is for adults—children should only play.
D.Children should only learn about one thing at a time.
30.What does Daniel Greenberg say about three-year-olds?
A.They are too young to learn anything.
B.They are very naughty.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司C.They want to be outside all the time.
D.They love learning.
31.Which of the following is correct in the school meetings?
A.The older children have more power than the younger children.
B.A child has more power than an adult.
C.Everybody has equal power.
D.The younger children have more power than the older children.

Learning a new language can be a big challenge at any age; however, it seems to be especially difficult to master a
foreign tongue as we age.
When we are growing up, we are building a language system in our mind, which allows us to communicate freely.
If we start a new language after youth, however, we are adding a new set of rules to our mind. That is why we find it
difficult to learn a new language—we’re building a new speech system when we are not young any more. Why is it
easier for kids to learn a new language? Children are relatively more active, open-minded and their language system is
not fixed, meaning it is less work for them to pick up new things.
The good news is that learning a language isn’t really that hard if you’re opening your mind. But it does take hard
work and motivation to achieve your goals.
It’s important to remember what you’re actually learning is how to communicate in a new way with other human
beings. If you often share your daily experience with others in that language, what you’re learning is related to you. For
example, if I’m learning Italian, I would never remember how to say “Dove e la biblioteca?” or “Where is the library?”
but I will always remember how to say “Ti piace il caffe?” or “Do you like some coffee?”
In addition, TV shows, films and video games in foreign languages are all great forms of entertainment for
learning a new language. Anything that relates you to the language and culture is great, so long as you find it enjoyable.
Adding a single new word to your vocabulary can be interesting and rewarding. The road to fluency can be hard,
but the view along the way is really amazing, so it’s OK if you are driving slowly.
32.What affects language learning according to the first two paragraphs?
A.Money. B.Age. C.Mind. D.Work.
33.What can we infer about language learning from paragraph 2?
A.Adults can pick up new things quickly.
B.Children have a fixed language system.
C.Adults find the new rules easy to remember.
D.Children outrun adults in language learning.
34.What is helpful for learning a language according to paragraphs 4 and 5?
A.Using it in daily life. B.Playing video games.
C.Going to the library. D.Taking down its rules.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司35.What may be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Build up Your Vocabulary?
B.Language Learning: Chance or Challenge?
C.Why do Children Learn Faster Than Adults?
D.Is It too Late to Master a Foreign Language?

It was my tenth birthday and I would have the biggest party ever. The guest list began with a few close friends. But
in the two weeks before that special Friday night, it had quickly grown from seven girls to a total of seventeen. Nearly
学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司every girl in my fifth-grade class had been invited to come to my house for a big celebration. I was especially happy
when each guest I invited excitedly accepted the invitation. But as I later realized, I would truly treasure only one gift I
received that night.
The family room was filled with shouts and laughter. We had just finished a game and were lining up for a dance
when the doorbell rang. I hardly paid attention to who might be at the door. What did it matter? Everyone I liked from
school was there, in my family room.
“Judy, come here for a minute,” Mom called from the front door.
I walked toward the front door, and then stopped. My mouth dropped open and I could feel my face turning red,
for there on the front porch (门廊) stood Sarah Westly — the quiet girl who sat next to me in music class — and she
was holding a gift.
I thought about the growing list. “How had I forgotten to invite Sarah?”
I remembered that I only added a name to the list when someone had shown an interest in me. But Sarah had never
done that. Never once had she asked me about my birthday party. Never once did she step into the circle of kids
surrounding (围绕) me at lunchtime. And once she even helped me carry my schoolbag while I held my science project
walking to our third-floor classroom.
I guess I had forgotten to invite her simply because she wasn’t pushing to be invited. I accepted the gift from Sarah
and asked her to join the party.
“I can’t stay,” she said, looking down. “My dad’s waiting in the car.”
“Can you come in for a little while?” I nearly begged (恳求). By now I felt pretty bad about forgetting to invite her
and did want her to stay.
“Thanks, but I have to go,” she said. “See you Monday.”
