media include paint, pencil, marker, crayon, ink, felt, and oil pastel.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, the longest-running literary and art competition in the US, provides
opportunities and academic awards for creative young people to express their talent. The theme this year is “Tell
Your Climate Story”. Students in the 9th to 12th grades can submit poetry, fiction and nonfiction to show their
understanding of environmental issues.

Thirteen, for me, was a challenging year. My parents divorced and I moved to a new town with my father, far
from my old family and friends. I was terribly lonely and would cry myself to sleep each night. To ease my sadness,
my father purchased an old horse for me at a local auction. I named him Cowboy.
Cowboy was undoubtedly the ugliest horse in the world. But I didn’t care. I loved him beyond all reason.
I joined a riding club and suffered rude comments and mean snickers about Cowboy’s looks. I never let on
about how I felt, but deep inside, my heart was breaking. The other members rode beautiful, registered horses.
When Cowboy and I entered the events where the horse is judged on appearance, we were quickly shown the
gate. No amount of preparation and love would turn Cowboy into a beauty. My only chance to compete would be in
the speed events. I chose the jumping race.
One girl named Becky rode a big brown horse in the race events. She always won the blue ribbons. Needless
to say, she didn’t feel threatened when I competed against her at the next show. She didn’t need to. I came in next to
last.
The stinging memory of Becky’s smirks (得意的笑) made me determined to beat her. For the whole next
month I woke up early every day and rode Cowboy five miles to the arena (竞技场). We practiced running and
jumping for hours in the hot sun and then I would walk Cowboy home totally exhausted.
All of our hard work didn’t make me feel confident by the time the show came. I sat at the gate and sweated it
out while I watched Becky and her horse charge through the course and finish in first place.
My turn finally came. I put on my hat, rubbed Cowboy’s neck and entered the arena. At the signal, we dashed
toward the first fence, jumped it without trouble and raced on to the next one. Cowboy then flew over the second,
third and fourth fences like a bird and I turned him toward the finish line.
As we crossed the line the crowd was shocked into silence. Cowboy and I had beaten Becky and her fancyhorse by two seconds!
I gained much more than a blue ribbon that day. At thirteen, I realized that no matter what the odds, I’d always
come out a winner if I wanted something badly enough to work for it.

Maths phobia (恐惧症) is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach,
feeling sad about the phenomenon and hoping to find ways to solve it, wrote a book called The Fear of
Mathematics and How to Overcome It. Maths, he said, has so much to contribute to society that solving this fear is
a challenge of the highest importance.
Why do we fear mathematics? At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of
what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent
mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that numeracy (计算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same
thing. What, then, is mathematics?
Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. For me, part of the issue is that we are stuck
in the first box. A focus completely on technical skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from finding
patterns and understanding them, from seeing the true beauty of mathematics. That beauty lies in wonderfully
elegant thinking that allows us to understand the infinite (无穷大), explore the amazing symmetries (对称) of art
and nature, and delight in the perfection of an abstract world of ideas. As a language, what sets maths apart is the
universality (普及性) of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you are from. If we can be shown the beauty
of mathematics, we will forget to be afraid of the technical details behind it.
Today’s self-help experts like to point out that, physiologically, we experience anxiety the same way we
experience excitement. So, if your heart is racing and your palms are sweating before a big event, you simply have
to tell yourself that you are excited. In the same way, fear can be negative (dread) or positive (awe). Our goal
should be to try to move people from a view of mathematics as a collection of calculations whose great difficulty
brings dread to an appreciation of a beautiful language whose complexity inspires awe.
A hundred years on, Auerbach’s writing is as relevant as ever. It is a timely reminder that “maths anxiety”, as it
is now called, remains as much a challenge in 21st century as it was in the 20th.

Today and every day we are the targets of advertisers, fundraisers and politicians trying to persuade us to buy
something, do something or think a certain way. And they’re good at it.
Over the years, they’ve learned a lot about which features to build into a communication and which
psychological strings to pull at to increase its success. But by concentrating on the message itself, they’ve missed a
crucial component of the process.
Research done in the last 15 years shows that best persuasion is achieved through pre-suasion------the practice
of arranging for people to agree with a message before they even know what’s in it.
Pre-suasion works by focusing people's attention on a selected concept, which in turn stimulates them to
overvalue it over related ones. In one study, visitors to an online sofa store were greeted with images of either soft
clouds or small coins in the background of its landing page. Those who saw the clouds were more likely to prefer
soft,comfortable sofas for purchase whereas those who saw the money preferred cheaper models.
Long before scientists started studying the process of pre-suasion, a few notable communicators already had
an intuitive (直觉的)understanding of it.
For example, the pre-suasive strategy was employed in the late 1950s by the advertising firm Doyle Dane
Bernbach to introduce the oddly shaped Volkswagen Beetle to a US market dominated by big, powerful,boat-like
vehicles. The “We’re ugly but...”campaign strategically admitted to limitations in appearance before trumpeting (鼓
吹)the auto’s strengths such as economy, reliability and simplicity. Credited with breaking open the US market for
small cars, the ad campaign has been rated among the greatest of all time.
With considerable success, practitioners of social influence have always featured persuasive elements------
great praises, emotional pull, last-chance opportunities------in their appeals. Perhaps because of that success,
they’ve mostly missed an accompanying truth. For maximum impact, it’s not only what you do; it’s also what you do
just before you do what you do.
