W:I just think that “likes” don’t really represent anything on Facebook. It just means that someonesaw and enjoyed it.It is just a kind of politeness. But wouldn’t you rather have someone comment
on your photo?
M: For me, that’s a response. It means they saw it and they liked it.And not just liked it,but they
actually appreciated it.
W: I’d rather have an actual conversation with my friends about the fun things I did, as opposed to
just approving of it with a thumb up.
M:I guess for me, it feels like a connection...so that when I see them in person,I know that they’ve
seen it,because they liked it.
W:It can be really addictive to just start trying to get “likes” everywhere.

W: Come on, Gary.

18. What can 18-year-olds do from 2022?

C. To develop its economy.
20. What do young Japanese people
care about more?
A. How to pay less tax.
B. How to celebrate Coming of Age Day.
C. How to enjoy health care payments.
A 18. A 19. C 20. B
W: Japan’s government has passed laws to lower the age at which people become adults.
It is the first time since 1876 that this has happened. From the year 2022, teenagers will become
adults at the age of 18, which is two years earlier than the age at which adulthood currently legallyhappens. However, even though the age has been lowered, there are still certain things that will
not change. The legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking will remain fixed at 20. The new law
will enable 18-year-olds to get married without the agreement of their parents, and allow them to
apply for loans and credit cards.
The new law has been passed in an effort to bring about social and economic change in Japan. The
government hopes to see an increase in the number of young people getting married and starting
families. This will help to deal with the nation’s falling birth rate and ageing population. Greater
financial freedoms could be a boost to the economy and provide more tax incomes. This is very
important for a government struggling to deal with increasing retirement money and health care
payments.
Many of Japan’s young people are more concerned about how the law will affect traditional
Coming of Age Day. This is a national holiday held in January in which 20-year-olds dress up in
traditional clothes to celebrate adulthood.

The new member to the UAE's astronaut training program, the first female Emirati (阿联酋)
astronaut, hopes that her mechanical engineering degree will be her ticket to the moon.
Nora AlMatrooshi and her fellow trainee astronaut Mohammad AlMulla were selected from
4000 highly qualified candidates to lead the nation’s 9.8 million citizens into space.
The two are looking forward to the laborious 30-month program ahead of them which has
already begun with them getting their divers’ licences, picking up the Russian language and
coaching for their many media interviews—and will move on to flight and weightlessness school
at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas and eventually cruel survival training.
“They will need mechanical engineers to build a base on the moon,” says the 28-year-old,
who represented her nation at the Mathematics Olympics and worked as an engineer at the
National Petroleum Construction Company.
AlMatrooshi says she has dreamed of the stars since kindergarten, when her teacher set up
the classroom as the Lunar surface and the five-year-old future astronaut constructed a cardboard
moonbase. That early longing to explore space charted her degree choice.
“I actually went after it. I chose to study a degree in mechanical engineering because of a
documentary I watched when I was in high school. It was about a group of astronauts going to the
International Space Station and the role of the mechanical engineer was highlighted,” she say.
Leading big construction projects in the desert has helped equip the daughter of two
academics—a PhD father and English teacher mother—for Lunar construction.
AlMatrooshi’s fellow trainee astronaut, UAE police helicopter pilot AlMulla, meanwhile says
astronaut training has been “a big career change”.
“I spent 15 years qualifying to be a pilot, including training in Australia for my commercial
pilot’s licence,” says the father of two. “As a pilot you get used to mastering everything—
suddenly I’m changing my path.”“I’m a big fan of SpaceX. The rockets and even the fancy space suits. And hopefully all four
of us—and all the astronauts who come after us will get to be a part of future missions—perhaps
even to the moon eventually.”
24.What preparation have they made before the training program?
A.They have grasped their native language.
B.They have had cruel survival training.
C.They have learned to deal with the press.
D.They have done some weightlessness training.
25.Which is the major factor for AlMatrooshi to be a member of the training program?
A.She got help from her academic parents.
B.She has had a big dream since her childhood.
C.She has experience in big construction projects.
D.She was the winner of the Mathematics Olympics.
26.What does the underlined part “I'm changing my path” refer to?
A.I’ll be a master of life. B.I’m an enthusiast for SpaceX.
C.I’m settling my new problem. D.I’m starting a new life from scratch.
27.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The fans of Space X B.Dream and achievements
C.Passion and preparations D.Future astronaut training program
The two are looking forward to the laborious 30-month
program ahead of them which has already begun with them getting their divers’ licences, picking
up the Russian language and coaching for their many media interviews—and will move on to
flight and weightlessness school at the Johnson Space Centre in Texas and eventually cruel
根据第七段的“Leading big construction projects in the desert has helped
equip the daughter of two academics—a PhD father and English teacher mother—for Lunar
I spent 15 years qualifying to be a pilot, including training in
Australia for my commercial pilot’s licence(我花了15年获得飞行员资格,包括在澳大利亚接
受我的商业飞行员执照的培训)”“As a pilot you get used to mastering everything(作为一名飞行
The new member to the UAE's astronaut training program, the
first female Emirati (阿联酋) astronaut, hopes that her mechanical engineering degree will be her
Nora
and preparations(激情和准备)”为最佳标题。故选C。

Alaska’s Yukon River has faced major salmon shortages in recent years. Officials say record-
high temperatures last year killed most salmon in the 3,200-kilometer river before the fish were
able to reproduce. The losses led Alaska to stop their salmon harvests in 2021 to make sure that
enough fish survived to reproduce for another year.
The poor salmon harvests caused major financial losses to private fishing companies in the
area. The die-offs also hurt native communities, which traditionally store the fish as a year-round
food supply.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Commerce declared a disaster for Yukon River fishing
for 2020 and 2021, making aid money available. Alaska has sent emergency fish shipments to
areasaffected by the salmon shortages.
Scientists have mostly blamed the problems on a series of heat waves in the Bering Sea and
North Pacific Ocean from 2014 to 2019. The warm ocean waters affected salmon’s living in the
sea before they returned to lay eggs.
Climate change may also be affecting what the salmon are eating. Fishing experts say young
salmon are likely filling up on nutrient-poor food because warmer waters drive away healthier
organisms (有机物) they normally feed on. “In my opinion, the salmon are starving with climate
change,” said Brooke Woods in the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission.
The effects of climate change on freshwater environments have also been studied. Vanessa
von Biela is a biologist who looked at the rivers, streams and lakes where salmon live. Her team
found that Chinook salmon show heat stress at temperatures above 18℃. They start dying above
20℃. In 2019, temperatures on the Alaskan side were above 18℃ for 44 straight days, a recent
study found.
The effects of warming waters can be reduced by climate-driven glacier (冰川) runoff, which
brings cooler water into rivers and streams. But scientists still expect salmon to begin slowly
moving to new areas within Alaska. “Salmon will find a way,” said Biela. “but it’s going to be
hard for communities in places where there might not be salmon anymore.”
28. What do the locals rely on salmon for?
A. Food supply.
B. Scientific study.
C. Green tourism.
D. Water improvement.
29. What did the declaration of the disaster bring about?
A. Financial losses.
B. Relief funds.
C. Economic growth.
D. Fast delivery.
30. Which of the following is the effect of climate change in Yukon River?
A. No healthy organisms are left there.
B. Salmon there lose the ability to lay eggs.
C. Salmon there go short of nutritious food.D. The temperature remains above 18℃ till now.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Measures to protect salmon are effective.
B. Salmon will not find a way out of the crisis.
C. The amount of salmon will increase greatly.
D. Salmon are likely to leave the river for survival.
A 29. B 30. C 31. D

Sugar-free cookies, reduced-sugar cereal, sugar-free candy, diet soda... are these better for
you? Since sugar became a taboo (禁忌) in the nutrition and wellness world, sugar-free food items
and drinks have acted as substitutes for once beloved sweet drinks and snacks. Claiming to be
ZERO sugar means it is healthier, better for diabetics, and helps you slim down... Right?
Wrong. Sugar-free isn’t better for you. In fact, sugar-free is worse.
Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used instead of real sugar. The
problem:these sweeteners do not come from natural sources and they can cause you more harm
than good.
Let’s get into what these artificial sweeteners actually are. Sugar-free sugar sounds wrong
and that’s because there is no such thing as sugar-free sugar. Some of these sugar-free alternatives
still contain sugar and the ones that don’t contain sugar have chemicals your body often does not
know how to process.
Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so only a tiny amount is needed. That’s
why they can market sugar-free alternatives as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”. It also means that
you get no nutritional value from consuming them, which is why many sugar-free substitutes are
classified as “non-nutritive”. These artificial sweeteners tend to hide under sneaky names.
Actually, they are 200-600 times sweeter than sugar.
When you eat sweet stuff, your body continues to desire it and, even though your body
cannot metabolize (代谢) these sugar-free alternatives, your brain does not know the difference. In
turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain and type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).
Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which impacts
everything you eat. In other words, your body doesn’t know how to handle artificial sweeteners
because they have nothing real to process.
A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural
sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar. In the war against artificial sweeteners and real sugar, both
lose. Satisfy your sweet tooth with natural sugars that come from fruits and stay away from
products claiming to be sugar-free or diet!
32.What can be learned about sugar-free products?A.They don’t taste sweet. B.They are more nutritious.
C.They contain artificial sweeteners. D.They contain natural sweeteners.
33.Why are sugar-free alternatives described as “low-calorie” or “no-calorie”?
A.They won’t lead to weight gain. B.They are greener and healthier.
C.They are much to everyone’s taste. D.Small quantities of artificial sweeteners are
used.
34.What do we know about artificial sweeteners?
A.They present a bigger health risk. B.They can be easily broken down.
C.They are as sweet as sugar. D.They improve our ability to metabolize.
35.What is the author’s final conclusion?
A.Real sugar is a better choice. B.Stay away from sugary products.
C.Sugar-free products are healthier. D.Choose sugar from natural sources.
【答案】32.C 33.D 34.A 35.D
根据第三段中“Sugar-free means that artificial sweeteners (甜味剂) are used
Most artificial sweeteners are a lot sweeter than sugar,so
only a tiny amount is needed. That’s why they can market sugar-free alternatives as‘low-
In turn, sugar-free alternatives connect to weight gain
Artificial sweeteners also damage your gut’s ability to break down sugar, which
故选A。
A good rule of thumb: stay away from artificial
sweeteners and look for non-sugar, natural sweeteners like Stevia or date sugar.(一个很好的经验

A few years ago, I was unemployed after just getting back on my feet from illness. Although
upset, I decided to blow my savings and go to Australia on my own for six months, which turned
into two years!
Travelling alone, on the other side of the world, was scary and I faced so many challenges
that let me see the kindness in humanity (人性). The most notable for me was just after I had been
granted my second year visa, having only $20 left to my name.
I applied for a job through an agency, was offered the job but told to return for a secondinterview with the office manager, suit required. I pieced together a suit from a charity shop
with my last dollars. I had arranged a bank transfer from home but a bank holiday had severely
delayed the speed of the transfer, so I was left with no money for food.
At the second interview, my stomach betrayed my hunger and I tried to joke about my
financial difficulties. The manager offered to give me money there and then, despite not officially
offering me the job. I stubbornly refused, but promised if my money was delayed further I would
accept his kind gesture. I got the job!
After this, I found an apartment and used my money from home to cover rent and a deposit,
knowing I have a job and a wage to come. I thought things were looking up until I moved into the
apartment and discovered my housemate was a completely crazy person.
Two weeks later, I realized I couldn’t stay there and gave notice to leave after I found another
apartment around the corner. Again I thought I had dodged a bullet (逃过一劫) and things were
OK. I was four days into my new job and arranging to move into the new apartment when I got a
text from my new landlord the day before I was due to move in, apologizing and saying the room
wasn’t available.
I honestly didn’t know what to do. ______________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________
Everyone in the office was so lovely to me that day.________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
I honestly didn’t know what to do. I could neither live with the crazy housemate nor afford a
hotel. When I returned, lying in bed, I racked my brains all night attempting to seek for a way out
of this mess but in vain. That was when I never felt farther from home. The next morning, though
with everything weighing on my mind, I dragged myself to work. "Didn’t sleep well?" a colleague
asked. Tears welling up, I could hardly contain myself and broke down.Everyone in the office was so lovely that day. The colleague brought me a hot tea, while
others were listening to me quietly. For the first time, I gave up my manhood, pouring out my
awful experiences and feelings. The manager offered me a room in his house and even would
accompany me to fetch my belongings after work. Maybe that was just a small gesture in their
eyes, but it meant the world to me, and I would always seek to pay the kindness forward whenever
I could.
