Hello, everyone!
I’m Li Jin, a student from Chenguang High School. It’s my pleasure to share my
understanding of Chinese ancient poetry.
Poetry is more than just words on a page. It’s also a window to our cultural heritage. To
appreciate poems, we should immerse ourselves in the language and read poems repetitively,
making them easier to understand. Moreover, it is beneficial to learn the background information
about the author, which enables us to discover the hidden meanings the poem conveys.
I hope this activity will be a spark for a lifelong love of Chinese poetry and we’ll have fun
learning ancient Chinese poems.
Thank you.

My father seemed very pleased when I took the salad to him. “It looks so good. Your salad
makes my mouth water.” Dad couldn’t wait to try it. He forked a piece into his mouth and chewed
slowly, his face spreading in a satisfied smile. Giving me a thumbs-up, he said, “Little did I know
you are so good at gardening. You are a man of your word.” My father kept praising me, which
made my ears burning. Feeling bad about what I had done, I forced a bitter smile. How could I
cheat my father?
Feeling guilty, I decided to do the right thing. With tears welling up in my eyes, I told my
father I didn’t live up to his expectations and that the garden was in a mess. To my surprise,
instead of scolding me, my father patted me on the shoulder gently and told me to turn to him if I
needed any help. Under his guidance. I learned to apply fertilizer, weed and remove bugs. The
vegetables became better and better day by day, and so did my father. I began to enjoy taking care
of vegetables and I finally understood my father’s pleasure of working in the dirt.

M: I don’t think so. Mary organized the party. She is the most boring girl I have ever known. So
you can imagine how the party was.
W: It must have been very early when you got home.
M: Yes. I had planned to stay at the party till 11:30pm so that when I got back from the party, it
would have been time for me to watch a football match, but I got back so early that I still had two
hours before the football game began.
W: Did you stay up to watch the football game then?
M: Yes. It didn’t begin until 11:58, so I didn’t go to sleep until 2:00 am.
W: No wonder you don’t look so good.
M: Yeah. Now I just want a bed.

neighborhood.
M: I found him when I was just thirty-five, so five years now.
W: What do you mean by saying you found him? You didn’t buy him from a pet store?
M: No. I found him on the street. He was homeless and very dirty. I took him home and cleaned
him up. I’m so lucky to have found him.
W: What do you mean?
M: Well, he saved my life just one year after I brought him home.
W: How did he save your life?
M: I’ve suffered from heart disease since I was a teenager, and it has put my life in danger at times.
One night I suddenly fainted when I was taking a shower in the bathroom.
W: And you said your cat saved your life?
M: Yes, he went into the bedroom and woke up my wife. She immediately took action and saved
my life.
W: So you saved the cat and in return it saved your life.
M: Yes. I guess kindness really pays off.
Text 10
A couple of months ago, I went to a department store to buy a few things for the house. I needed
two sets of curtains for the living room, two table lamps, a carpet and several cushions. I asked
them to deliver the things within a week, but they said they were unable to send them out until ten
days later. After about three weeks, I received only the curtains and table lamps. I was a little
disappointed when I didn’t receive all the items I had bought. But nevertheless, I was eager to see
what the curtains and lamps looked like. I first opened the package with the curtains. I had bought
a lovely light blue and a light green, and instead they had sent me a horrible dark purple. Well,
you can just imagine how angry I was. Then I opened the boxes with the lamps. They were exactly
what I’d ordered. But one of the lamps was damaged. The next thing I did was to telephone them
to complain. They promised to come and pick the items up immediately and also to replace them
with the correct order. It has been two weeks since my complaint. They have neither picked up the
wrong items nor sent me the rest of my order.
