One Teen Story Competition
About the competition
For our One Teen Story competition, we ask writers aged 13 — 19 to enter unpublished stories written by
themselves. What’s in a great short story? Interesting teen characters, strong writing, and a beginning, middle, and
ending.
Prize
The winning stories will be published on our website. The competition winners will receive $500 upon
publication. The winners will also have the chance to work with a One Teen Story editor, who is also an expert in
writing.
Guidelines
• Short stories should be between 2,000 and 4,500 words.
• By submitting (提交) your work, you must ensure that it is your own creation, that it has not been borrowed from
any other person’s work (including film, video, and online content), that it has not been created with any help from
AI tools, and that the characters and situations are of your own invention.
• Stories should have teens as their main characters and be about the teen experience.
• No entry fee (费用) is required.
• Only one submission per person.
• You must submit your work through our online submission manager.

story competition followed by your age group (13 — 15, 16 — 17, 18 — 19). You will receive an email upon

Preston Mutanga first got interested in animation (动画) when he was seven. Back then, he made simple
videos and posted some of them, mostly in a 3D style, on YouTube.
For years, Preston has spent a lot of time working on his videos and perfecting his skills. When he gets home
from school, he rushes to animate, and then does his homework, but if there is extra time, he continues to animate
until he has to go to bed. “I enjoy animation because the possibilities are pretty much endless,” he said.
When Preston saw the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer (预告片), he thought it would be fun to
recreate. The 14-year-old boy then replicated (复制) every trailer shot using CGI LEGO characters and uploaded
the video to YouTube without any idea that it was about to change his life.
The trailer finally caught the eye of actual Sony producers working on the movie. Those producers got in
touch with Preston and asked him to animate a work. Christina Steinberg, one of the producers, said Preston was
able to reveal the emotion of the movie but also the timing, so his animation made the characters’ feelings clear to
everyone who watched it. “It might look easy, but it’s extremely hard to do,” she said.
Preston worked with the production team over his spring break to create a short video. “He is so creative, and
he was so wonderful to work with,” said Steinberg. Preston said his work went through several revisions, during
which he got feedback and made changes. Finally, he was just excited to be a part of the team.
In the long run, Preston wants to continue to animate and make art. He hopes one day to become a
professional animator or director. Preston’s advice for other kids who want to go after their dreams is “Never
second guess yourself. You’re the only one that’s stopping you from doing what you want to do.”

Do you know what is living in your backyard?
Almost 380 of the 1,900 nationally listed threatened species can be found in urban (城市的) areas across
Australia and are facing extinction. The latest five-yearly State of the Environment report was released (发布) in
July and found there are growing pressures on Australian urban wildlife mainly from the reduction of habitat.
The report found that there are now more than 1,900 species listed as threatened; of these,42 extremely
endangered species have no protection in the National Reserve System, which is Australia’s network of protected
areas. The number of Australia’s threatened species has seen an 8 percent rise since 2016, reaching 1,918 in June
2021, up from 1,774 in 2016.
To address this problem the World Wide Fund for Nature has released a backyard tool for everyday
Australians to use to help save some of the endangered wildlife found in urban areas. It’s a tool to help local people
identify such species found in their backyards and report their findings to the Fund and the authorities. Released on
Tuesday, the new interactive tool “My Backyard” allows users to discover which threatened species live in their
local area and what measures can be taken to help protect them.
WWF-Australia chief conservation (保护) officer Rachel Lowry said people might be surprised to learn that
bushland and forests near cities are home to some of Australia’s rare (稀有的) animals.
“It is a fun and interactive tool that also makes it easier for people to take action, to reach out to their local
authorities and call for better protection of our unique Australian wildlife,” Ms Lowry said.
“Generally, Australia’s native animals are under increasing pressure from climate change, habitat loss,
shortage of food, pollution or hunting. But I’d also argue that our silence is affecting our threatened species because
they need our voices now more than ever,” she added.

It’s quite interesting that two members of the U. S. men’s Olympic alpine ski team had their birthdays during
the PyeongChang Winter Games. Plus, five more celebrated their birthdays within two months of the event. This
birthday pattern (模式) might seem random (随机的), but it’s not completely by chance. Young athletes are
grouped by birth year, so kids born earlier are often stronger and get chosen first by coaches. This early choice
gives these kids a clear advantage that can last throughout their sports life, affecting their performance in sports and
school.
Some sports, like American football, have rules to make things fair for kids of different ages. But in other
sports, like gymnastics and skating, being younger can actually be an advantage. Boys’ sports often favor older kids
more than girls’ sports do. Even with these challenges, coaches need to make sure all kids have the same chances,
no matter how old they are.
Coaches need to be aware of age bias (偏见) so they don’t accidentally leave out kids who are really good. It’s
important to make sure every child is given a chance to enjoy sports. Also, we should think about how age bias
affects younger kids. Age isn’t the only thing that decides if someone is good at sports; having the right equipment
(装备) and support is important too, and above all, practicing a lot is the most important thing.
We also need new ideas to deal with age bias. David Mann, who studies sports, tried one idea by watching
10-year-olds play soccer. He found that when coaches knew kids’ age by certain means (like shirt numbers
showing relative age), they didn’t always pick the oldest ones. By doing so, they can reduce age-related bias. This
shows that learning about age bias can help make things fairer. If coaches work to fight age bias, every kid can
have a chance to do their best and have fun in sports.
