Many people think the dinosaurs were the biggest animals that ever lived. They are wrong. The world's biggest animal is
still living and it lives in the ocean. It is called the blue whale(鲸鱼). Blue whales can be as long as 30 meters and weigh
as much as 1,000 kilos. The largest dinosaurs weighed only 500 kilos.
The whale is not only the world's biggest animal, it is also one of the smartest. We know that whales can communicate
with each other, although we do not know what they are saying. Perhaps one day we will learn how to communicate with
whales, and then they will be able to tell us about themselves.
Although they live in the ocean, whales don't lay eggs like fish do. They are mammals(哺乳动物). They give birth
to babies and produce milk inside their own bodies to feed them. Humans are also mammals.
There are lots of stories about whales, but perhaps the most famous story is Moby Dick, which was written by an
American writer named Herman Melville. In this book, a sailor named Captain Ahab spends a lot of time trying to find and
kill an enormous white whale named Moby Dick.
Sadly, there are not many kinds of whales left. People have killed them for food and other things for thousands of
years. However, there are now laws to stop people killing most kinds of whales. So perhaps there will be more of them in
years to come.

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about
something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about
my not very bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor, and much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job
related to science, either. In fact when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修)in English and communications,
she nearly had a heart attack.
"Why can't you be like my co-worker’s(同事)son?" she bemoans all the time.” Her co-worker's son received a four-
year scholarship(奖学金)and is now making 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except
that I just can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the
person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career
because I love it, not because of honor or money.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her little
money and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am. She usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm.
However, I want her to know that if I become a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and
create my own future.

Do you have a smart speaker to play your favorite song? Have you ever had a chat with Siri? I'm sure your answer
must be yes. Voice assistants are programs on digital devices. They listen and respond to verbal (口头的) orders.
Today's voice assistants can help you with many things. They can do almost anything you can think of. They can
answer questions, make calls as well as provide weather, traffic, sports and other realtime information. They can even
control smart devices (装置) in your home, such as the highlights and air conditioner.
So how do they understand us?
It all starts with a signal word. Users say the names of their voice assistants to get their attention. For example, they
might say, "Hey, Siri!" The signal word wakes up the device and tells it to begin paying attention.
After it hears the signal word, the voice assistant starts recording. The device waits for a pause to know you've finished
your request. It then sends your recorded request over the Internet to its database (数据库).
Once in the database, your request is compared to other requests. It's divided into separate orders that your voice
assistant can understand. The database then sends these separate orders back to the device. When it receives the orders, the
voice assistant will carry out the task you asked for.
Voice assistants are improving all the time. If you say to a smart speaker, "Play rock music", and it plays country music,
you'll tell it to stop. This teaches the device that the orders it received from its database were wrong. It will tell the database
4 / 8about the mistake and try to do better next time.Sometimes a voice assistant might ask a question after it receives your
request to make sure it understands what you want.

Studies show that laugh is good for our health and may even be the best medicine.
A newspaper reported that Dr. Miller measured the blood flow of 20 healthy people before and after they watched two
