Katie was waiting for Gulliver’s calls. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. “Maybe
Gulliver missed the harbour.” Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats

Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle’s neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull’s name, Gulliver, was given by him.
The gull’s size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first
summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone’s attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller (婴儿车) on the floating
dock (码头) when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie’s
stroller shake strongly. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and
stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye on Katie after that. Another summer Katie was
three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn’t watch her every minute when she tried to catch small
ducks around or fish from the water. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” The gull’s cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie
as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards the water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to
call out as Katie tried new things.
This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she’d learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was
trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds,
she saw a single white feather. A gull feather? She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around her knees,
she closed her eyes to hold in the tears (眼泪). “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Katie sat up. “Katie! Katie!” Soon, Dad and
Uncle Ralph appeared. “How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks,” Uncle Ralph said, “At least…
it sounded like him. Strange, he was nowhere in sight.” Katie remembered the feather. “I thought I heard him, too.”

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place. Around 1870, it was experiencing an economicboom(经济繁荣), and the capital Buenos Aires, attracted many people. Farmers, as well as many foreigners from
Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires looking for jobs. These jobs didn’t pay well, and the people felt lonely with
their new life in the city. As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known
as the tango came into being.
In the beginning, the tango was a dance of the lower classes(阶级). It was danced in the bars and streets. At
that time women were fewer than men, so if a man didn’t want to be left out, his only choice was to dance with
another man so that he could attract the attention of the women. Gradually, the dance spread into the upper classes
of Argentinean society and became more respectable.
In Europe at this time, a strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. The interest in
international dance was especially strong in Paris. Every kind of dance from ballet to belly dancing could be found
in Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public
as they performed their exciting dance in cafes. Though not everyone liked the new dance, tango really attracted
enough supporters to make it popular.
The popularity of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world. Soldiers who returned to the
United States from World War I brought the tango to North America. It reached Japan in 1926, and in 2003 a tango
dancer from South Korea was hired to act as a kind of dance ambassador(大使)and pushed for tango dancing

How do you feel about bees? Do you get tired when they buzz around you and are you afraid that they sting
(蜇)you? Love them or loathe them, these little insects are extremely important creatures, and without them we
might starve(饿死).
Bees should be respected—they give us honey, and they play their part either by pollinating(授粉)the many
vegetables and fruits we eat directly or the food for the animals indirectly. In fact, they are the world’s most important
公众号:初中英语助手pollinators. That’s not all—a study found bees and other pollinating insects have a global economic value of around
£120 billion and contribute around £690 million to the UK economy every year.
So, bees are worth protecting. Although a small number of bee species are important for crops such as oil-seed
rape, apples and strawberries, experts say we should be taking care of all our bees. Researchers say conservation
(保护)efforts should be aimed at a wide number of species—even those that contribute little to crop pollination—
in order to keep biodiversity and ensure future food security.
________, in recent times, bee populations have been smaller and smaller because of pesticides(杀虫剂),
disease and habitat loss. “It’s something we should be worried about because they provide a whole ecosystem(生态
系统)service,” Gill Perkins, chief executive of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, told BBC Future website. The
recent lockdowns caused by the coronavirus pandemi(c 新冠疫情)seem to give bee populations good news because
they faced less human disturbance, traffic and pollution problems.
Gill Perkins also says, “Humans are beginning to realize how their mental health and happiness is supported by
nature —especially by bees, which are so iconic and beautiful and buzzing. It really seems time to give bees a second
chance.”

A.tell us the trouble of bees B.lead us to the topic of bees
