By the time she turned 18, Khadijah Williams had attended twelve schools. She had
lived in shelters, in parks, and in motels, never in a permanent residence (住宅) for more
than a few months. She had been laughed at and looked down upon by students at a dozen
schools who thought of her as“different”.
Homeless since early childhood, Khadijah struggled all her life to hide her
circumstances (情况) from teachers and fellow students. However, academic achievement
高一强实班英语 第 3 页 共 10 页proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. For instance, at the age of 9,

career there—a decision that meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a.m. and not getting
home until 11 p.m.

Harvard University college application, she was accepted.

Over 5 million shared bikes in China are using services offered by Beidou Navigation
Satellite System(北斗卫星导航系统).These shared bikes all use Beidou based positioning
chips(芯片).
The chips have high qualities. They can deal with information accurately and quickly.
They feature low power consumption. They provide a better user experience and easier
management for the local companies. Now, several new models of shared electric bikes
with Beidou-based chips have also started to be produced and put into market. Besides

and battery condition of an electric bike. The possible crimes during the bike using will

In fact, years ago, shared bike companies began to use positioning chips which worked
well with both GPS and Beidou services. After the Beidou system became fully in use in

more bikes in more areas. The latest chips which are popular with bike companies are

You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep
refilling it. Or you order takeout(外卖) for dinner and save the black plastic container(容
器) to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability(可持
高一强实班英语 第 5 页 共 10 页续性). But should you be reusing these single-use (供一次性使用的)plastics? Experts say
no.
Single-use plastics leach (滤出) chemicals and shed(释放) microplastics into your
environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic,
experts say they are more concerned about single-use plastics because of how they’re
made. A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro-and nanoplastics into your water when
you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles(微粒) into
your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a
dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. When heat is applied,
molecules(分子) move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these particles to
make its way into your food.
The danger of heating your plastic also applies to reusable plastic, like baby bottles
and plastic storage containers, according to Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics.
Research found that black plastic in sushi trays, and other objects contain high levels of
flame retardants (阻燃剂). These poisonous chemicals have been linked to physical and
mental problems.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said,
because you are swallowing them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a
major concern, they added. The most important thing you should do is avoid subjecting
your plastic to heat, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave
plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s also a recommendation not to put plastic into the
dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
If you order takeout, it’s best to transfer the food to a nonplastic dish as soon as
possible, and you should use a plate when microwaving your food.
32.Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce background information. B.To prove the experts’ opinion.
C.To lead into the topic. D.To analyse the reason.
33.What can we learn from the research?
A.It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
B.Plastic bottles of good quality are encouraged to use.
C.High temperature makes little difference to takeout food.
D.Reusable plastic is more dangerous than single-use plastic.
34.Which situation gives the biggest threat to human’s health?
A.Heating fast food in a glass bowl.
B.Ordering hot soup contained in a plastic bag.
C.Filling the grocery bag with meat.
D.Packing cold drink with single-use plastics.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To advise people to avoid using all plastic products completely.
B.To compare the advantages and disadvantages of single-use plastics and reusable
高一强实班英语 第 6 页 共 10 页plastics.
C.To introduce the wide application of plastics in daily life.

We live near a famous hospital in the city. Since our house is big, we rent some rooms
to the patients.
One evening, a truly ugly old man came. Extremely politely, he said, “Good evening.
I’m wondering if you have a room for just one night. I came for treatment from the eastern
shore (海岸), and there’s no bus till the morning.” He told me he’d been searching for a
room since noon, but failed because of his face.
For a moment, I hesitated (犹豫), not only because there was no room left. But his
following words convinced (说服了) me: “I could sleep on the floor. I’ll leave early in the
morning.”
By chatting with him, I knew he fished for a living to support a big family. But what
touched me most was that instead of complaining, he was grateful that his disease didn’t
bring him terrible pain.
