1.【原文】W: Let’s have a party at my house to celebrate Nelson’s birthday

word about the party when you see Nelson tomorrow.
2.【原文】W: Excuse me, sir. Is bus No.6 going to the People’s Park?
M: No, you can take bus No.11, but you have to transfer to bus No.8 at the Workers Hospital.
W: That’s okay. Where shall I get off then?
M: At the City Library stop. It’s in front of the park.
3.【原文】W: Are you satisfied with the dishes?
M: Yes, the food here deserves its reputation. Chinese food is one of my favorites. I like this
dating with you.
W: As long as you like it, I’ll introduce more Chinese flavors to you.
4.【原文】M: Have you finished your paper? We have to hand it in tomorrow.
W: No, I did nothing this week, but type it. Could you help me print it out now?
5.【原文】W: Hello Tom, this is Emily. We need to put off our beach party this weekend.
M: Why? I have informed all our friends.
W: I just watched the news. A typhoon is heading our way and is gaining strength. Weather
forecasters think it may turn into a super one in the next few days.
第6段材料【原文】W: You look blue, Simon. What’s wrong?
M: My neighbor threw rubbish in my garden, which makes me really angry.
W: Is there anything you can do about it?
M: I don’t know. I just clean it up by myself. I don’t really want to argue with him at all.
W: How about having a friendly talk with him?
M: I’m not sure. I haven’t spoken to him yet. He just moved here a few weeks ago. I only know
other people called the man Mr. Black.
W: Why don’t you invite him to have afternoon tea then you can mention the rubbish in the
conversation.
M: That’s a good idea. I will visit him tomorrow.
第7段材料【原文】M: Shirley, would you come to my office after class?
W: Sure, professor Lee.
M: Come in Shirley. Well, I’d like to hear your plan for the new school year.
W: Actually, I want to choose the marketing class instead of the literature class. I’m tired of
reading literary books.
M: But are you sure you like marketing better?
W: I’m not completely sure, but I want to have a try.
M: You know you’re very outstanding in writing and I do wish you would become a writer.
W: Thanks for saying so, professor Lee, but I’m interested in being a marketing manager. It pays
well.
M: Well, think twice before you make your final decision.
W: I will, Mister Lee, and thank you for your advice.
第8段材料【原文】W: Hello, Nick. I’m ringing about granddad’s seventieth birthday party. Will it be on Friday 26th or Saturday 27th September?
M: Well, Uncle Jack decided on Sunday because several people couldn’t make it Saturday or
Friday.
W: OK, are you going to have the party at your house?
M: It’s too small. The party will be at his Golf club. There’s lunch before the party at Mario’s
restaurant.
W: Hmm, I can take you there in my car.
M: Thanks but I’d like to drive mine.
W: All right, what about presents? My brother is going to buy granddad a set of three CDS and
there is a beautiful hat I’d like to buy for him. What do you think about it?
M: Excellent. I’ve bought him a leather suitcase. Well, see you on the day.
W: Bye Nick.
第9段材料【原文】W: Hi, Bob. Is everything okay?
M: More or less. There’s just one thing bothering me though.
W: Oh, what’s that?
M: Well, I have some students studying for their master’s degree. One of them tried to give me a
gift, which made me uncomfortable.
W: What gift?
M: It’s an Egyptian carpet. The student came to my home a week ago, yeah, last saturday, and
brought the carpet to show his thanks. I was really uneasy about this. I mean, it’s too expensive a
gift for a student to give a professor, so I didn’t accept it.
W: You refused the gift. That must hurt the student.
M: I know, but I really can’t accept such an expensive gift. I explained to him why, but he
seemed really disappointed about it.
W: He probably thought you considered the gift a bridge for a higher grade.
M: That’s what I am worried about. I think we need to have a talk to make sure we are on the
same page.
第10段材料【原文】 Today our lecture is about how some American states got their names.
Each state was named in a different way. For example, the first thirteen states along the Atlantic
coast were usually named for British rulers such as North Carolina and South Carolina. The early
British explorers named some areas by adding the word new to the name of a town or place in
Britain. For example, the eastern states of New Hampshire and New Jersey. Other states were
named by Europeans who were not British. For example, Spanish explorers in the 16th century
gave the name California to an area they discovered. They did this because they thought the area
was an island. California was the name of an island of gold in a well known Spanish book of the
time. Other names of places show the influence of American Indians. For example, French
explorers called a river in the Midwest “Missouri”. They named it after the Indian tribe that lived
along the river. They also gave the name Missouri to a place along the river, which later became
a state.
