When Debbie Parkhurst choked (呛;噎)on a piece of apple at her Maryland home, her dog
jumped in, landing hard on her chest and forcing the piece of apple to pop out of her throat. Debbie
Parkhurst’s husband, Kevin, was at his job at a chemical firm when she took a midday break from the
jewelry shop and bit into an apple. When the Keesling family of Indiana were about to be overcome by
carbon monoxide(CO), their cat clawed (抓) at wife Cathy’s hair until she woke up and called for help.
For their timely acts, Toby, a golden 2 -year-old dog, and Winnie, a gray-eyed American shorthair,
were named Dog and Cat of the Year by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Neither Parkhurst nor Keesling could explain their pets’ timely action, though Parkhurst suggested it
might have been guided by God intervention (干预). “That’s what our veterinarian (兽医) said,” she said.
“He wasn’t making a joke; he’s very serious, and now I have to agree with him.”
But both pets were themselves rescued in baby, Toby as a 4-week-old baby thrown into a garbage
bin to die, and Winnie as a week-old baby hiding under a barn, so helpless that Keesling’s husband, Eric,
had to feed her milk.
As the Keeslings recalled it, a gas-driven pump spread carbon monoxide through the house. By the
time Winnie moved into rescue spot, the couple’s 14-year-old son, Michael, was already unconscious
(无意识的). “Winnie jumped on the bed and was clawing at me, with a kind of angry noise,” Cathy
Keesling said. “When I woke up I felt like a T-bar had hit me across the head.” State police and officers
said the family was only minutes from death, judging by the amount of poisonous gas in the house.
24. How did Debbie’s dog helped her?
A. It barked loudly and took the piece of apple out.
B. It put a hard thing on her chest to take the piece of apple out.
C. It jumped onto her chest and pressed it, making the piece of apple out.
D. It broke the piece of apple and take it out.
25.We can know Debbie Parkhurst _______.
A. works in a chemical factory B. might have died without her pet’s help
C. was making jewelry when she had the accident D. was unconscious when her pet found her
26. Why did Winnie try to wake Cathy Keesling up?
A.Because a T-bar was going to hit him. B. Because he was hungry and wanted milk.
C. Because another cat was clawing at Cathy angrily. D. Because there was danger in her house.
27. From the passage we can infer that _______.
A. Toby and Winnie are dangerous B. to help others sometimes can get reward
C. we can’t never be too careful in our daily life D. all pets are useful to peopleC
Portugal is one of Europe’s oldest nations. First-time visitors are usually struck by the friendliness of
the people, the affordable food and wine, and the diversity (多样性) of a country that is relatively easy
to travel in; you can travel around Portugal in just a few days.
Portugal’s cities — especially Lisbon and Porto — show Portugal’s role as a superpower in the past
that ruled the sea from Brazil to East Asia, though it’s not all about history: the cities have some of
Europe’s best clubs and modern buildings. Head inland and there are endless possibilities, from touring
the countryside to walking, cycling or rowing down inland rivers. It is the coast, however, that is the
biggest attraction. From cliff-backed coves (背靠悬崖的小海湾) to endless hills of sand, you are
seldom far from a beautiful beach. While its western Atlantic beach(沙滩) is still relatively unknown
to those outside the surfing (冲浪) community, the calmer waters of the Algarve offer a relaxed beach
experience.
One of the many advantages of Portugal is its year-round sunshine. Although the winter months can be
a little cold, the sun is often shining and the skies are blue. The best time to travel to Portugal is during
late spring (March to May) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is warm. In the
summer months, beaches are full of people, hotels are more expensive and the temperature can be
unbearably hot.
Portugal’s relatively small size allows for much of the country to be seen within a short period of time
while also allowing for it to be travelled in depth over a longer period. You can create your own itinerary
(旅行计划) with Rough Guides if you are looking for something especially provided for you, or for more
ideas check out our itineraries to meet your every travelling wish!
28. Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “struck” in Paragraph 1?

30. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The hotels in Portugal. B. The weather in Portugal.
C.When to travel to Portugal. D. How to travel to Portugal.
31. What might be talked about in the paragraphs following the text?
A. Outdoor activities in Portugal. B. Several itineraries to choose from.
C. Lisbon’s best affordable hotels. D. Portugal’s top five surfing beaches.

Some police departments in the United States are experimenting with AI tools to help them produce
reports. Police officers who have tried the AI chatbots (聊天机器人) praise the technology as a time-
saver. Yet some government lawyers, legal experts, and others have expressed concerns about the AI-
produced reports.
Axon, known for its body cameras, has developed a chatbot that uses the same technology as
ChatGPT. This AI tool, named Draft One, is being tested by officers like Matt Gilmore from OklahomaCity. He describes the AI chatbot as a “game changer” for police work. In the past, after completing a
search, the officer would spend another 30 to 45 minutes writing up a report. “This meaningless work
takes me ages!” Matt said. But this time he used AI and the process only took eight seconds. And he
described the report as better and more exact than one he could have written himself.
However, Axon's CEO, Rick Smith, also noted legal and ethical (道德的) concerns about the tool.
Government lawyers advise the police to be careful with the tool. They want to ensure that police officers
are responsible for writing their reports. Prosecutors (检察官) never want to get an officer on the stand
who says, “Well, the AI wrote that, I didn't.”
Chatbots that use AI technology are not mistake-free. Sometimes these chatbots can produce false
information, which worries Andrew Ferguson, a law professor at American University. “I am concerned
that the technology would cause police officers to be sort of less careful with their writing,” he said. A
police report is important in determining whether a suspect is guilty or not. However, human-created
police reports also have problems, and it is not yet known which kind of report writer, human or AI, is
more dependable.
32. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To explain how AI chatbots work for the police.
B. To encourage the use of AI in police departments.
C. To discuss the advantages and concerns of AI tool in police.
D. To stress the legal and ethical problems of using AI in police reports.
33. According to the passage, what is one advantage of using AI to write police reports?
A. It helps officers to complete a search. B. It avoids the risk of false information.
C. It ensures that reports are always right. D. It frees officers from boring daily tasks.
34. What can we infer about AI technology from Paragraph 4?
A. It may make police officers lose their jobs.
B. It may make officers less serious about their reporting.
C. It might make the police more careful with their writing.
D. It can produce reports more reliable than human-written ones.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. The Future of AI Chatbots B. AI Chatbots Used in Police Reports
C. The Rise of AI Chatbots D. Police Reports Produced by AI Chatbots

What do the world’s most successful people all have in common?
By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers
including Stanford professor Jeffrey Pfeiffer found that high achievers like Robert Moses turned out to beall alike:
Busy! Busy!
36 In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reports that many of them work 60 to
65 hours per week—which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work
difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many
advantages to those seeking to build power.
Just Say No!
The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people
say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much. 37 And
focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions (分神).
38
Ignore your weaknesses and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas
where you have little competence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths. This means knowing
who you are, what you are and what you are good at.
Create Good Luck!
39 There’s a science to it. Richard Wiseman studies lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and
breaks down what they do right. Certain personality types are luckier because they behave in a way that
offers the chance for good opportunities. By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the
feeling that something is true, and being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities.
Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the
ideas—and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of the people who attended Luck School said that their
luck had increased. 40
A. Achievement requires focus.
B. Spend enough time to improve your weakness.
C. On average, these people reported that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.
D. Some people never stop working and they never lose a minute.
E. Busy people are more likely to be lucky.
F. Know What You Are!
G. Luck isn’t magical.
