She had just completed a PhD in Language, Literacy and Learning, and she was analyzing children’s access to books in wealthy and low-income communities. One day, she saw something that stopped her in her tracks. “I was at a school in a wealthy community, and they were getting rid of almost brand-new books because they didn’t have room in the library, “said Constantino. She put the books in her car and drove them to a school in an underserved community. Shocked by the difference she saw in public school libraries, Constantino became determined to bridge the gap. “School libraries are not funded well, and sometimes not funded at all,” said Constantino. “If you’re a child in an underserved community, you’re left with boring, outdated, and uninteresting books. “ The word about Constantino’s work was spread, and books began piling up. Today, her nonprofit organization, Access Books, has provided more than 1. 5 million books to public-school and community libraries across California. The group has also redecorated close to 350 libraries in public schools and homeless shelters. Constantino recruits (招募) volunteers who work alongside the community to create a warm, vibrant (充满生 机的) and welcoming library space. Students and their families, as well as school staff and teachers, come together to join in. “We’re working together. It’s not a gift; it’s a partnership. It really builds a sense of community,” said Constantino. In addition to book donations and refurbishing (再装修) libraries, the group offers author visits with schools and holds an annual writers conference for kids. Constantino said, “If we provide high-interest books and a beautiful library space, they do come and they do read. We found that in the schools that we serve, the number of books borrowed increases significantly after our coming. So we know that kids are really interested in the books that we give. My goal is that kids can always have a friend in a book and they can always turn to a book to find comfort and to learn something.” 24. Why did Constantino do the study in 1999? A. To prepare for a PhD. B. To reduce the waste of books. C. To donate more books to poor communities. D. To figure out kids’ ways of gaining reading books. 25. How did Constantino bridge the gap? 第 9页/共 27页A. By obtaining donated books. B. By raising money on the street. C. By founding a profitable organization. D. By getting support from the local government. 26. Which can best describe Constantino’s work? A. Challenging. B. Successful. C. Depressing. D. Doubtful. 27. What impact does the nonprofit organization have on kids in poor communities? A. They can turn to writers on campus. B. They are more willing to read books. C. The disaster comes after a series of deadly floods around the world this month, from China to Brazil to Greece. In every case, extremely heavy rain was to blame. The enormous loss of life on many continents strengthens the extreme danger caused by climate-driven rainstorms, and the need for better warning systems and basic facilities to protect the most vulnerable (脆弱的) populations. Climate change makes heavy rain more common, even in dry places where the total amount of rainfall is small. That’s because a hotter atmosphere can hold more moisture. Everyday rainstorm, as well as bigger storms such as hurricanes, are increasingly dangerous as a result. In Libya, a storm called Daniel swept in from the Mediterranean over the weekend and resulted in a jaw-dropping 16 inches of rain in just 24 hour, according to the World Meteorological Organization. That is far too much water for the ground to absorb, especially in a dry climate where the soil is dry and is less able to suck up water quickly. 第 11页/共 27页The massive amount of rain caused widespread flash flooding and damaged at least one dam near the coastal city of Derna. That released torrents of water powerful enough to sweep away entire neighborhoods. In Brazil, flooding from a hurricane last week killed more than 20 people and left a large piece of southern Brazil underwater. Cities around the world are hurrying to improve their basic facilities to handle increasingly common heavy rain. The disasters in the last two weeks also stress the vulnerability to climate change of people who are not wealthy or who live in places that are at war. While extreme rain has caused floods around the world recently, the number of the death is significantly higher in places where there isn’t money or political will to maintain basic facilities and enough weather warning systems. 28. What led to the floods in Libya? A. Extreme rainfall. B. Wet climate. C. Severe hurricane. D. Broken facilities. 29. What does the underlined phrase “suck up” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Separate. B. Supply. C. Store. D. Absorb. 30. How do the floods affect people? A. They lead to people’s union. B. They cost people their lives. C. They inspire people to struggle. D. They make people become strong. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. Floods linked to climate change. B. Floods in Libya and their causes. C. The needs of disaster preparedness. D. Climate change impact on poor areas. 【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. A 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了气候变化导致暴雨更频繁,造成了洪水泛滥,给世界各地带来了 巨大的破坏和生命损失,我们需要建立更好的预警系统和基本设施来保护这些最脆弱的人群。 【28 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中的“Disastrous floods in eastern Libya killed at least 5,100 people, according to local authorities. (据当地政府称,利比亚东部的灾难性洪水造成至少 5100 人死亡)”和“In every case, extremely heavy rain was to blame. (每一种情况都是极端暴雨造成的)”可知,利比亚的洪水是由极端降雨引起的。故选 A 项。 【29 题详解】 第 12页/共 27页词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“That is far too much water for the ground to absorb, especially in a dry climate where the soil is dry (这对土壤来说是太多的水,以至于无法吸收,尤其是在干燥气候下,干燥的土壤)”可 推知,极端降雨带来的大量的雨水本身就无法被土壤吸收,此处在进一步说明干燥气候下的土壤更难吸收 这些雨水,因此 suck up 意思应该是“吸收”,与 absorb 意思接近。故选 D 项。 【30 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The enormous loss of life on many continents strengthens the extreme danger caused by climate-driven rainstorms (许多大陆上生命的巨大损失加剧了气候驱动的暴雨造成的极端危险)” 以及倒数第二段“In Brazil, flooding from a hurricane last week killed more than 20 people”(在巴西,上周飓 风引发的洪水造成 20 多人死亡)可知,洪水夺去了人们的生命。故选 B 项。 【31 题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“The enormous loss of life on many continents strengthens the extreme danger caused by climate-driven rainstorms, and the need for better warning systems and basic facilities to protect the most vulnerable (脆弱的) populations. (许多大陆上生命的巨大损失加剧了气候驱动的暴雨造成的极端危 险,需要更好的预警系统和基本设施来保护最脆弱的人群)”可知,文章主要围绕气候变化带来的更频繁的 暴雨造成的洪水展开,说明洪水给世界各地带来了巨大的破坏和生命损失,而我们需要建立更好的预警系 统和基本设施来保护这些最脆弱的人群。因此,A 项“与气候变化有关的洪水”符合文章大意。故选 A 项。 D Plants cannot run or hide, so they need other strategies to avoid being eaten. Some curl up their leaves, others produce chemicals to make themselves taste bad if they sense animals drooling on them, chewing them up or laying eggs on them — all signals of an attack. New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive (先发制人的) defense that even works against other pest species. When ecologist John Orrock of the University of Wisconsin-Madison sprayed snail slime — a liquid the animals release as they slide along — onto soil, nearby tomato plants appeared to notice. They increased their levels of an enzyme (酶), which is known to prevent plant-eating animals. “None of the plants were ever actually attacked,” Orrock says. “We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry.” Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning’s impact on another potential threat. The investigators found that hungry caterpillars (毛虫), which usually eat tomato leaves greedily, had no appetite for them after the plants were exposed to snail slime and activated their 第 13页/共 27页chemical resistance. This nonspecific defense may be a strategy that benefits the plants by further improving their overall possibilities of survival, says Orrock, who reported the results with his colleagues in March in Oecologia. The finding that a snail’s approach can cause a plant response that affects a different animal made Richard Karban curious, a plant communications expert, who was not involved in the study. “It is significant that the plants are responding before being damaged and that these cues are having such far-ranging effects,” Karban says. The research was comprehensive, he adds, but he wonders how the tomato plants felt chemicals in snail slime that never actually touched them. “That’s the million-dollar question,” Orrock says. He hopes future research will make out the mechanisms that enable plants to sense these relatively distant cues. 32. Why did John Orrock spray a liquid onto soil near tomato plants? A. Because it gives them a warning. B. Because it makes them grow better. C. Because it keeps plant-eating animals away. D. Because it informs plant-eating animals of danger. 33. Why is the example of “caterpillars” mentioned in Paragraph 3? A. To introduce another animal. B. To confirm the result of the study. C. To appeal to people to protect animals. D To analyze different resistance chemicals. 34. What does Richard Karban really want to know? A. What the finding of the research is. B. What the chemicals in the snail slime are. C. Whether the research is of practical value. D. How tomato plants become aware of danger. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Watchful Plants B. Greedy Animals C. A Snail’s Approach D. A Defense Attack 【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. A 【解析】 第 14页/共 27页【导语】这是一篇说明文。研究发现:一些植物可以在食草动物发动攻击前很好地感觉到它们,这让植物 准备了先发制人的防御,甚至可以对抗其他有害物种。 【32 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段最后一句“We just gave them cues that suggested an attack was coming, and that was enough to cause big changes in their chemistry(我们只是给它们一些暗示攻击即将来临的线索,这就足以使它 们的化学反应发生巨大变化)”可推知,John Orrock 在西红柿植株附近的泥土上喷洒液体的目的是给予植物 一种警告,让它们能够产生自我保护性反应。故选 A。 【33 题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段第一句“Initially Orrock found this defense worked against snails; in the latest study, his team measured the slimy warning’s impact on another potential threat(最初,Orrock 发现这种防御方法对蜗牛有 效;在最新的研究中,他的团队测量了这种黏糊糊的警告对另一个潜在威胁的影响)”可推知,文中提到毛 虫的例子是为了验证这一点,即确认研究的结果。故选 B。 【34 题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段最后一句并结合对最后一段“The research was comprehensive, he adds, but he wonders how the tomato plants felt chemicals in snail slime that never actually touched them.(他补充说,这项研究 是全面的,但他想知道西红柿植物是如何感受到蜗牛粘液中的化学物质的,而这些化学物质实际上从未接 触过它们)”可推知,Richard Karban 实际上想了解的是西红柿植株是如何意识到危险的。故选 D。 【35 题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段中文章的中心句“New research now shows some flora can feel a plant-eating animal well before it launches an attack, letting a plant prepare a preemptive (先发制人的) defense that even works against other pest species.(现在新的研究表明,一些植物可以在食草动物发动攻击前很好地感觉到它们,这让 植物准备了先发制人的防御,甚至可以对抗其他有害物种)”可知,本文主要讲述的是有关植物的科学研究, 研究发现植物有对外在威胁或攻击的自我保护性反应。由此可知,A 选项:Watchful Plants(警觉的植物)适 合作标题。故选 A。 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 阅读下面短文,从选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone feels a little jealous (妒忌的) once in a while. A few months ago, my mom got remarried, making Drew my stepbrother. She hoped we’d get along. But he was like a headache I couldn’t get rid of. Mom thought inviting Kendall, my best friend, for a sleepover would take my mind off Drew. So far, that wasn’t working. Later in my room, Kendall and I were doing our nails when Drew came in, with a bowl of popcorn in his hands. “Does anyone want popcorn?” asked Drew. 第 24页/共 27页“Mom doesn’t like food in here, and you got into my room without asking!” I said angrily. “Time to leave, Drew,” I pointed to the door. I decided an ice cream would cool me down. In the kitchen, Kendall and I had hardly started eating when I heard Drew hurrying down the stairs. “Hey, who wants to have a pillow fight?” he asked. “I do!“ cried Kendall, sticking her ice cream in the freezer. She and Drew ran upstairs, leaving me alone with my bad attitude. I wasn’t about to follow them like a puppy. There was something I had to do. I took the cream and slipped into Drew’s room. I found his slippers, and stuck the cream inside them. Satisfied, I grabbed a pillow, ready to fight him. I ran into my room and hit Drew with the pillow. He countered with a blow to my legs. Kendall threw her pillow into his side. Before long, we were all laughing. I lifted my pillow over my head to give Drew a final blow. But I missed. It crashed into the popcorn bowl left on the dresser. The corns rained everywhere just as mom walked into the room.“Stop! You kids are being too wild,” she cried. “And, Sarah, you know I don’t like food in here.” 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为 120 左右; 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: I froze, not knowing what to say. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ Paragraph 2: I cornered Drew to tell me why he took the fall (承担责任). ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 第 25页/共 27页_______________ 【答案】One possible version: Paragraph 1: I froze, not knowing what to say. Silence swallowed the whole room. My heart beating wildly, I tried to come up with some reasonable explanations but in vain. “I am sorry,” I said. Then Drew spoke up, “It’s all my fault. The pillow fight was my idea, and I brought in the popcorn. I’ll clean it up.” I couldn’t believe what I had heard. I should have been grateful to him. Instead, I was suspicious. A random act of kindness? That wasn’t like Drew. Paragraph 2: I cornered Drew to tell me why he took the fall (承担责任). “It was my fault, and I didn’t want you to get in trouble. Besides, shouldn’t brothers and sisters stick up for each other? ”He shrugged. I suddenly realized that he was just trying — in his own way — to be my brother. Maybe even my friend. I didn’t know if it would last, but for now, my headache was gone. We invited Drew to watch a movie in the living room. He agreed and went to get his slippers. Then I remembered, “Drew, wait!” 词汇激活 行为类 ①尝试:try/attempt ②想出:come up with/think of/put forward 第 26页/共 27页③意识到:realize/be aware of/be conscious of ④同意:agree/consent/assent ⑤拿:get/fetch 情绪类 ①感激的:grateful/thankful ②怀疑的:suspicious/doubtful/dubious 【点睛】[高分句型 1] I couldn’t believe what I had heard.
