Christmas time with kids is filled with warm traditions: Listening to Christmas music while decorating the
tree, going to look at Christmas lights with hot chocolate in hand, and taking the kids to visit Santa Claus. Well,
delete that last one. At least for my family.
Parents think about how fun it will be at first to take their kids to see Santa, or tell them gifts are on their way
from Santa, but this comes with a series of annoying questions about Mr. Claus like how he makes it to all the
houses in one night, as well as the broken trust after revealing the truth. I didn’t want that.
You may think that our Christmases were rigid, stuffy, and without any warmth or magic. I don’t think so. Part
of that is due to what I taught my kids about Christmas. Instead of telling them Santa is real, I told them it most
likely has its origins in St. Nicholas, a man who was kind and generous to children in need. Netflix’s 2021 movie
"A Boy Called Christmas" is a useful tool for helping kids connect Christmas myths and traditions with reality
while keeping the spirit of generosity alive.
The month of December is filled with movie and game nights, plays and concerts. These family traditions
have added flavor to my kids’ entire childhood. Hopefully, they know now that it’s the time with family, doing
special things together, that creates the magic and that my love for them goes well beyond just one day — and that
magic, wonder and awe can happen any time with family, especially if we remain generous and grateful.
My kids are older now, and they’re glad they didn’t believe the myth of Santa. It was one fewer bad memory
for them, one fewer blow to their innocent childhood.

It’s Monday morning again. Like many others, you spend your weekend resting, say, scrolling on your phone,
but somehow when the workweek arrives, you never feel as refreshed as you hoped. You wonder: Is there a better
way to recharge? Now research suggests the answer is "yes" and it lies in leisure crafting.
Leisure crafting is not about what you do in your free time, but how you do it. It involves structuring things
you already enjoy doing with aim so that they help you set individual goals, promote social connections, and build
skills. The idea is not to completely shift your approach to free time — or even pick up new pursuits — as much as
it is to integrate a few specific goals. Like to run? Try training for a race. Enjoy reading? Aim to read a certain
number of books every month.
Setting goals in off-hours looks like another example of letting work-brain logic inch its way into personal
lives. But done right, it can help you feel a sense of purpose, confidence, and accomplishment, says Alex Hamrick,
a management professor at the University of Richmond. Researchers did 11 field studies with more than 2,400
working professionals and found that individuals reported higher energy levels, more positive moods, and stronger
overall well-being after engaging in leisure crafting.
While leisure crafting requires efforts and goal-setting, it is still simply that: leisure. The goal is not to turn
hobbies into a second job. Research has shown that people’s productivity tends to stop increasing at 60 hours a
week. Expanding the hours spent maximizing output, even in pursuit of perfecting your cooking techniques or
reading detective novels, could make you more tired. Hamrick agrees that if purposeful pursuits start to feel like
work, it might be time to stop. Leisure crafting should better-not replace-other forms of relaxation.
A recent government guide to getting off your phone included the suggestion of setting a recreational goal as a
diversion from the screen. Beyond all the grander reasons to leisure craft, that simple one may be among the most
relevant.

Poet and Harvard Professor Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famously said, “Music is the universal language of
mankind.” A new Harvard study suggests he may have been right.
The study conducted by a research team found that people around the world could identify lullabies (摇篮曲),
dance songs, and comforting songs — regardless of the songs’ cultural origin — after hearing just a 14-second clip
(片段). The finding suggests that not only is music deeply rooted in human nature, but that some types of songs
break cultural boundaries.
The findings are based on a wide-reaching experiment in which 750 online participants in 60 countries
listened to brief clips of songs collected from nearly 90 small societies around the world, including hunter-gatherers
and some special farmers. Participants then answered six questions, rating each clip according to whether they
believed the song was used for dancing, calming a baby, treating illness, or expressing love. Two additional uses —
mourning (哀悼) the dead and telling a story — were included as controls.
The data showed that despite participants’ unfamiliarity with the cultures, the random sampling of each song,
and the short duration of the samples, people were able to reliably infer the songs’ functions, and that their ratings
were consistent across the world.
The findings ran counter to expert expectations. The team had also asked professionals, including
performers, composers, psychologists, and scientists about whether they believed people would be able to identify
the song types. Their answer was no. And not only that, but they predicted that people’s responses will be
inconsistent with one another. “That’s not what we found,” the researchers said.
The researchers also wanted to know whether listeners were recognizing certain non-musical characteristics of
the songs. To test that, the team conducted a second study. This time, they asked listeners about a number of
contextual and musical features, ranging from the gender of the singers to the rhythm of the song.
When data from the two studies were combined, the results showed that songs of the same function shared
similar characteristics — lullabies, for example, tended to be slower and simpler than dance music — suggesting
that something about musical characteristics crosses cultural boundaries.

Hello, everyone, my name’s Sandy Duffy and I’m here to tell you about my job as a video game writer. I work
with game developers and designers to think of good stories, ¹⁷and I write all the dialogues in the game by
myself. When I was in secondary school, I never imagined that I would do this job! ¹⁸I played the violin and that
was what I planned to do as my job. But I had an accident when I was playing basketball and hurt my hand, so I
had to think of doing something else. My mother wanted me to be a journalist, but I didn’t think it was for me. I
didn’t know what to study at university. ¹⁹After graduation I went to a film school where I studied lighting,
special effects, how to use a camera, and all that (诸如此类)! It was there that I decided to work in the video
game industry. People also ask me what I like best about being a video game writer. Well, the money is good and
it’s quite exciting. Just last night, for example, I was at a big dinner where they were giving prizes for new games.
²⁰But what I love most is the fact that I get on so well with everyone in the company. That’s what makes my
job so much fun.
