order.Thereviewswerewrittenbyrealpeoplewhoweregiveninformationaboutthehotel.
Theresultsshowthatconsumersgenerallytrustnegativereviewsmorethanpositiveones.Moreover,
wehumanstendtoassumethatpositivereviewsmightbefake,“Overall,negativereviewsareless
common.So,wepaymoreattentiontothem.Whenanegativereviewisfake,wegettricked,”Azimi
says.
Whenitcametofakingareview,lengthwasimportanttobelievability,aswasdetail.Along,
negativereviewofahotel,completewithlotsofinformation,tendedtoconvinceparticipants.Alengthy,
positivereview,ontheotherhand,wasregardedassuspicious,andparticipantstendedtotrustwriters
thatkepttheirglowingreviewsshort.Emotionwasalsoimportantinconvincingreaders—orthelackof
emotion,atleast.Azimisaysstudyparticipantstendednottotrustreviewswherethewritersexpressed
theirfeelingsinabigway.Themoredispassionatethatnegativewriteup,themorelikelyitwastotake
thereaderin.
