What are the cultural differences between China and the West? You might be able to find the answer in Cao Siyu’s comics(漫画). Cao, 32, was born in Beijing, but
left home at 20 and has studied and lived in the US, the UK, and France for 12 years. Having seen so many cultures, Cao wanted to use her drawing sills to show the
differences she has experienced. So she created the cartoon series Tiny Eyes Comics.
“My experience shows that although travel is much easier and faster today, the distance(距离) between cultures hasn’t shortened,” Cao said. She hopes to build
bridges and break down misunderstandings between different cultures. One of her cartoons shows water forms in different countries. Three glasses of water are shown. The
glass of water from the US has ice; the one from France is full of sparkling water(气泡水); the one from China is steaming(冒热气的).
Cao also uses her cartoons to show different ways of thinking and social customs. During the COVID﹣19 pandemic, she used her comics to explain why Chinese people
prefer to wear masks while western people don’t. “Her simple pictures have played a big part in reflecting Chinese culture,” Italian magazine Grazia reported.
Many foreign readers say that Cao’s comics help them understand China, while Chinese living abroad have felt that they are seen and understood.
She said that this voice has been the biggest motivation (动力) for her to keep creating.

“Can I have a glass of hot water?” This is a very common question in a Chinese restaurant. For many Chinese people, nothing is more common than drinking hot water
every day. However, the simple habit is like a mystery to people from other countries.
For many Westerners, the idea of drinking hot water is very strange. However, most Chinese people think the Americans’ habit of drinking icy water is also strange and
even unhealthy. Some old people even take a tea kettle when they travel. Chinese doctors are encouraging more people to take on the habit of drinking hot water, especially
for women.
But in Western countries, drinking hot water isn’t common. Westerners often have drinks with ice, not just on hot days but almost every day.
There is a story online about a British man, who has been in Beijing for over five years. He visited a local coffee house when going back to England. He asked for a glass
of hot water in a British accent. But this request surprised the waitress, “To…to…to drink?” she doubted. Finally, the man received the hot water but felt cold stares from
every corner of the coffee house.
Westerners wonder why Chinese people drink hot water as Chinese are wondering why westerners drink cold water. This cultural difference is not a simple problem, but
has something to do with history, culture and science.
As a matter of fact, many teenagers now depend on bottled water for daily drinking. With the younger generation growing up, will drinking hot water become a less
popular life habit? Who knows?

There are many differences in the way different cultures raise kids. International visitors notice the fact that children are special in China. However, the way some
Chinese people treat these very special kids may shock some foreign visitors.
When I told a Chinese mother her child was beautiful, I was nonplussed when she replied, “No, she’s not;she’s ugly.”Since that time I have heard many similar comments(评论), including, “No, he’s not bright; he’s stupid.” This is a huge cultural difference that needs to be understood
when you talk about kids with your international visitors.
Someone explained it to me, “We Chinese don’t want to appear too proud.” I’m sure there are other people in the world who feel the same way, but most people in my
country would consider you a terrible parent if you said your kid was stupid or ugly. They would think you were breaking the child’s self-confidence. When we Americans say
something good about our child, we don’t think we are being proud because we are saying it about the child, not about ourselves. In this way, we separate the child from the
parent as two different persons.
You may think I sound too proud when I freely say to another westerner: “My daughter is smart and pretty.” Of course, I still have to teach her not to be proud, but I can
be proud of her. It’s just the way she was made, and I’m thankful for that.
So, in the US when we say something nice about our own kids, it is not considered being too proud but rather, being thankful and being a good parent.

A.hopeful B.worried C.regretful D.surprised

C.he is a Chinese parent D.he is an expert in education
69.When US parents praise their child in front of others, they ________.

D.try to build a good relationship with their kid
70.The article mainly discussed about ________.
