robot landed for his three-month research mission on 14 December 2013. His task is to take

photos and examine the Moon’s soil. Millions of people in China have been following Jade
Rabbit’s progress through the Internet. It’s something to be proud of because exploring space is
difficult and not every country can do it.
On 28January 2014, Jade Rabbit’s journey seemed to be over. On that day, in the voice of Jade
Rabbit, an Internet message was spread quickly, “Oh, something is wrong with me.” The Moon’s
difficult surface was giving the robot movement problems and it couldn’t work properly.
Scientists did not know if the robot would be able to wake up after the cold Moon night.
Reports of the news caused a big response on the Internet. People were worried and hoped that
scientists would find a way to fix the robot. Some said that reaching the Moon was already a great
achievement.
But then the story changed. On 12 February 2014, Jade Rabbit woke up!
He asked, “Is there anybody out there?” People joked that the rabbit was “waking up for the

Edmund Hillary was the first man to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma.
Born on 20 July 1919 in New Zealand, Hillary avoided sport and liked reading adventure stories
when he was a small boy. The expedition knew it might be their last chance to reach the top first.
As a teenager, Hillary grew tall and strong. On a school trip to Mount Ruapehu the
highest mountain on the north point of New Zealand, Hillary realized he was good at
climbing. He had greater endurance (耐力) than many of his classmates Hillary completed
his first big climb in 1939 by reaching the top of Mount Ollivier, another mountain in New
Zealand near the city of Christchurch, with his friend Tenzing Norgay.
After university, Hillary worked as a beekeeper with his brother. This summer job gave
him time to climb during winter. Hillary became very experienced and was able to join a
British expedition(探险队) to Qomolangma in 1953. In the 1950s, only one expedition was
allowed to climb Qomolangma each year. France was climbing in 1954 and Switzerland in 1955.
The expedition knew it might be their last chance to reach the top first.
The team practiced in Scotland before starting the climb in March 1953.
By 29 May 1953, the team was at the South Peak. The air becomes thinner the higher up a
mountain you climb. It becomes more different to breathe. Only Hillary and his friend Norgay had
the energy to try and reach the top. After five hours, they finished the climb at 11:30 a.m.
Although Hillary said they reached the top at the same time, Norgay confirmed that Hillary took
the first step on the top. They were at the top for 15 minutes but there are no pictures of Hillary

because Norgay didn’t know how to use a camera!

On 5 December 1914, our ship left South Georgia Island and headed for Vahsel Bay, where we
would begin crossing the Antarctic continent. It was the last great thing for the British to try and

couldn’t believe we made it. Back at South Georgia, we climbed through mountains and
finally reached a whale station（捕鲸站）on 20 May. We quickly wanted to get back to
Elephant Island and save the rest of our team, but ice stopped us on three different ships until a
ship from Chile called the Yelcho got us there. We got back to the island on 30 August 1916, about

How "Kangaroo" Became an Animal's Name
Early in the 18th century, Captain Cook, a famous explorer (探险家) of Australia,
unexpectedly caught sight of an unusual animal dunng his first visit to Australia. The
animal had a large mouth-like head and jumpedalong on its large legs. To his great
surprise, the unusual animal carried its young in a special pocket of flesh.
Captain Cook pointed to the animal which was eating grass in the distance and asked his native
guide what the animal was referred to. The guide seemed not to know what he was pointing at and
finally said Kangaroo, which Cook carefully wrote down as the animal's name in his word book.
The Europeans who later got to Australia were anxious to see the unusual animal "Kangaroo", but
their requests were met with puzzled looks of the native people. Before long they got to discover
that the native guide who made the answer to Cook's question really meant, "I don't know what
you are pointing at." Funny enough, the name "Kangaroo" stuck and it is still in use today.
