Dear Sandy,
I’ve now been living in the UK for almost tow months. I enjoy being here but miss Chinese food.
My favorite food is spicy, and to me British food has no taste!
I’m now in London. It’s a great city because there’s always something I can see or do. However, it
can be hard to do certain things because it’s always busy and there are lots of queues everywhere
you go. But I think a lot of the people in the queues are tourists. The city has many museums you
can visit for free. My favorite is the Natural History Museum. It has a great dinosaur exhibition.

I’ve been keeping a diary every day and today’s the first time there has been no rain. I do find the
weather here very strange. Often it changes two or three times in one day so it can be hard to plan
for anything. Last weekend, my new friend Lucy and I wanted to go for a picnic in Hyde Park.
Sunday seemed like a good day to go because the weather report said it was going to be sunny all
day. It was not! Ten minutes after we sat down on the grass, it started to rain heavily. Lucy said it
was raining cats and dogs. British people enjoy saying this.
I sometimes find it hard to understand the meaning of what British people say. Earlier at a cafe.
Lucy asked me if I was all right. I told her no and explained that I ordered a cup of tea but there
was milk in it. Lucy laughed at me. She told me that in Britain “all right” is usually just another
way of saying hello. Anyway, she explained that the British like to put milk in their tea and it’s
completely different from Chinese tea. It’s good to know this.
Best,
Lily

四、读短文,填空。
Most people experience culture shock when they first arrive in a foreign country. It even happens
if they are just visiting and it cannot really be avoided. It is natural. I am going to tell you about
the four common stages that people experience.
The fist stage is known as the honeymoon stage. During this stage, everything about the new
country is exciting. The different food, customs and habits of the culture seem amazing. Often a
person will not miss anything about their own culture at this stage. There are too many new things
to be interested in and most people feel very cheerful. But for many people this stage does come to
an end.
Next is the negotiation stage. After spending some amount of time in the new country, you will
find that the changes between new and old start to become clear. Challenges in communication
and understanding of different cultures may lead to anger and can make you feel lost. Anxious,
lonely feelings can also arise at this stage. People will miss their family and friends, and may
strongly wish to return to what they understand as normal. The third stage is called the adjustment
stage. Everything about the culture is beginning to make sense. People will usually get used to
their daily life. Problems also start becoming easier to solve. They have a better idea of what to
expect in the new country. The life in the new country is normal now.
The final stage is known as the mastery stage. At this point, people will feel completely
comfortable within the new culture. They know what to expect and can join in completely with the
new way of life.
Stage Description

Last Friday, for our weekly event, we watched Peking Opera at the Qingdao Grand Theatre. As a
young man from the United States, it was my first time to watch live Peking Opera, and it was
special.
Peking Opera, also known as Beijing Opera, is called “京剧 (Jingju)” in Chinese. It
is a
traditional Chinese opera and has a history of over 200 years. It is an art form that
combines music, vocal performance, dance and acrobatics(杂技). The works of Peking
Opera are mainly based on Chinese history and traditional stories and customs.
The performance we watched that night was called Meeting the Queen and Hitting the
Dragon Robe (长袍) The story is from a Chinese classic literature. Bao Zheng was one
of the most well-known ancient Chinese government officials in Chinese history. One day,
he met an old lady on his way back home. The old lady claimed herself as the mother of the
emperor and had been
set up by others. After checking that the old lady was the emperor's mother, Bao Zheng helped her
to get back to the capital and she blamed the emperor for all the misery she had suffered. She
ordered Bao Zheng to punish the emperor and Bao Zheng hit the dragon robe instead of hitting the
emperor in order to save himself from being punished.
When the opera started, we were amazed by the unique sound made by the musical instruments.
They were in perfect cooperation with the singing of the performers. Also, the costumes the
performers wore were extremely beautiful and attractive as they have several colours and patterns
on each one of them. The performers also "told" the story by their movement. For example, a walk
around the stage would mean they took a long trip somewhere. Even though it was kind of hard
for us to get used to the music and to follow the story, we were glad that we decided to join the
event! We look forward to such an event again. It really helps us know more about Chinese
culture.
