Kung fu
“Kung fu ”is the popular name given to Chinese martial arts in the West. It refers to a number of
different styles of fighting that have developed over hundreds of years in China. These different
styles are often called “schools”. One of the most famous schools is the Shaolin School. It comes
from the Shaolin Temple at Songshan in Henan Province.

Have you ever thought about running a marathon? It is not easy. A runner must be both
physically and mentally (精神上）strong. Marathon running is very popular nowadays between
the young and old, but at the first Olympic marathon race in 1896, only17 runners joined! At the
New York City Marathon in 1976, an eight-year-old boy called Wesley Paul finished the marathon
in three hours and 37 seconds. In 2011, three 80-year-old runners finished the Boston Marathon.
Often people find it even harder to run a marathon than they expected. A person should have
a strong reason for wanting to run in the first place. It could otherwise be easy to give up on the
strict and challenging training schedule. Wanting to lose weight, for example, is probably not a
good enough reason to begin training for a marathon. A strong reason like running for a charity or
a sick family member helps many people keep focused and succeed.
It takes about three months to fully prepare and become healthy enough to run. You really
must change your diet too. It is important to eat the right food to give you enough energy for
training. Experienced runners will tell you not to practise running for the full 42.2 kilometres.
During training, it is better to run a maximum of about 35 kilometres, simply because the last
seven or eight kilometres are very hard and u could get hurt by practising too much. This final part
of the run will be the biggest test of how mentally strong you are.
The day before the marathon, it marathon, it may be a good idea to have a short run in your
marathon clothes. This will be the final mental test and should be the final way to make you feel
confident about your success in the marathon.
