Your carbon footprint
The total amount of carbon dioxide(CO2) you produce a year is called your carbon footprint.
Besides breathing, there are two other ways you can produce CO2. First, you can do it directly, by
driving a car or using a gas stove. Second, you can do it indirectly, by buying or using products
that produced CO2 when they were made.
Generally, you should make your carbon footprint as small as possible. For example, you can use
public transport instead of a car, or you can walk or cycle.

It is reported that some developed counties have shipped broken parts of computers to China.
Such a thing can be founded every day although it is against international laws. Last month Hong
Kong officers found 131,000 kilograms of broken computers, TVs and phones sent from Japan.
Things like these are called electronic waste, or e-waste. Dealing with them is not an
easy job because dangerous poison like mercury(汞) and lead(铅) can be found in them.
Every time an old computer breaks down, it needs to be dealt with safely. But at present,
broken computer parts are usually buried. It may be hundreds of years before they are really goes
in the earth.
Many places in China are polluted by e-waste. Guiyu in Guangdong province is one of them.
This town is named as "the e-waste capital of the world". It has to deal with 1.5 million kilograms
of e-waste each year, from which it makes 75 million yuan. But it comes at a cost. Many of the
poison in e-waste find their way into the environment. Plastic is burned outdoors and chemical
water is poured into rivers, Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and
the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted.
The Chinese government wants the country to develop, but in a way that doesn't do harm to the
environment and people's life. This year, China presents a new protection law, the strictest one we
have ever had. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old
computers. This is because the companies that make computers know best to deal with them
safely. Hopefully, the problem with e-waste will be solved in near future.

It's important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:
Reduce
If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely(明智地). A larger number of
trees are cut down to make paper. If everyone uses paper carelessly, soon we will not
have any trees left. Other things are also being wasted, and people don't know what to do
with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to use things wisely.
Reuse
You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them away. For example,
you can give your clothes you do not wear any more to the poor. In a family, you may pass on
such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.
Recycle
Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By recycling them we save lots of
time and money. For example, Coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed
flat (压平) and melted(融化) and the metal things are made for new Coke cans.
Recover(恢复)
When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐烂的) apples, you have
two choices(选择): One is to throw the whole apples away, or you can cut off the rotten
parts and keep the good parts. In the way, you are recovering the eatable(能吃的) parts of
food.
Repair
If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it. If you want to change for better
ones, it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after
doing some repair.

Gasoline (汽油) prices are getting higher and higher. The prices make it hard for drivers
to afford the fuel.
