Ferdinand Magellan (1480 –1521) was a Portuguese explorer. In 1519, he led the first voyage to
sail around the world. It was also the first voyage to sail from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific
Ocean. Magellan gave the Pacific Ocean its name, which means “peaceful sea” in Portuguese.
However, Magellan himself was killed in a battle before the voyage was finished. Only one of his
ships, the Victoria, completed the journey.

Most films set in space are usually horror films (恐怖电影) and include aliens in
their story. Gravity is different and focuses on the human drama instead. The film’s
special effects are so amazing that it is easy to believe that Gravity really was filmed in
space. It took more than three years for a British team to create all of these effects.
We first meet the characters outside of their spaceship on a spacewalk. Dr Stone, a strong-
minded mother whose daughter died in an accident, is on her first journey into space and is joined
by Matt Kowalski, an experienced astronaut. Kowalski makes jokes and tells stories about his life
to help Dr Stone feel less nervous about being in space.
The astronauts are soon warned that pieces of a damaged satellite are flying in their direction ion.
Their spaceship is soon hit and destroyed. Dr Stone is knocked into space. It seems that she will
die there. The fast moving camera work and loss of contact with Earth makes everything even
scarier (恐怖的).
Luckily, Kowalski saves Dr Stone and they decide to go to the nearby International
Space Station and see if their escape vehicle (逃逸飞行器) can be used to return to
Earth. On the journey, they have trouble and are about to lose their lives in space
together. Kowalski allows himself to float away to save Dr Stone.
From here Dr Stone is alone and the film explores whether she is strong enough to say alive, or
want to.
Gravity is a powerful film about a woman’s journey in a lonely place. You will find it worth
watching because it is not only interesting but also moving.

She helps save lives by treating people and heading the Children's Health Project of Washington
D.C.
Dr Gloria did not have a lot as growing up in a poor area of Brooklyn, New York. She
suffered a lot when she was a child. After she grew up, she wanted to help poor children in her

city. She turned down high-paying jobs and chose to work on the south side of Washington D.C.

fights. But if you were to ask her if she was scared, she would say no. She wanted to give
medical treatment to poor people. When she was a child, she knew how hard it was for poor
people to go to hospital because they could not afford the expenses. She knew she could make a
difference to poor people's lives. She decided to keep doing so even though it meant her life might
be in danger.
In order to help more poor people, she started the Children's Health Project of Washington
D.C. It helps provide health care for children in the most dangerous parts of the inner city. She
was the first doctor to work on the project. She put in twelve years of hard effort to. help the
program. When she saw a man get shot nearby, did that stop her? No! It only made her work even
harder to help the less fortunate. Her effort paid off. She helped a lot of people and was given the
2005 Annual Caring Award.

China became the fifth country with deep sea technology in 2010. It started testing the Jiao long
submersible （A）_________31 May and 18 July 2010. The early tests focused on(B)蛟龙号能

meters in the Mariana Trench.
