Zu Chongzhi was a great mathematician and astronomer (天文学家) during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
Zu Chongzhi's main contribution to math is the calculation (计算) of pi. Records show that Zu worked out the
numerical value of pi— between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927, which was the most advanced achievement in the
world at that time.* It wasn't until the 15th century that someone else surpassed (超过) his precision. Some
people even wanted to name pi after Zu as a way to honor him. What's truly amazing is that Zu did all this
calculation even before the invention of the abacus—he used wooden counting sticks!
Zu Chongzhi and his son, Zu Geng, discovered how to calculate the volume of a sphere (球体). Zu Chongzhi's
book, Zhui Shu, was used as a math textbook in the Tang Dynasty.
In astronomy, Zu Chongzhi created the Daming Calendar, taking into consideration the "precision of the
equinoxes ( 岁差)" for the first time in China. This was an important development in the history of Chinese
calendar.
Zu was also good at machine making. He invented the south-pointing carriage (马车) and 1000-li boat, which
could travel 100 li (1 li = 1/2 kilometers) in a day.
Zu was one of the few Chinese mathematicians to have a lunar feature named after him. People named a lunar
crater at the back of the moon "Zu Chong-zhi crater" in memory of him. Additionally, the asteroid (小行星) 1888
was named "Zu Chong-zhi".
51. What is Zu Chongzhi's main achievement in the field of math?
A. Finding out the numerical value of pi.
B. Calculating the volume of a sphere.
C. Making a special calendar.
D. Discovering the asteroid "Zu Chongzhi".
52. What's the Chinese meaning of the underlined word "precision"?
A. 精确度
B. 方法
C. 预期
D. 稳定性
53。How do people feel about Zu Chongzhi's way of calculating pi?
A. Disappointed.
B. Excited.
C. Proud.
D. Amazed.
54. Which paragraphs show Zu Chongzhi was a mathematician?
