高中英语 | 含有数字的英语惯用语

英语中有很多含有数字的习惯用语和习语。在这些惯用语和习语中，数字不再表示其本来的含义和精确的数量，而是具有了虚指的意义，用来表达模糊概念（多少、程度、状态、概率），是一种修辞用法。这些惯用语具有夸张、比喻或强调等功能。这类惯用语在句中主要用作状语和表语。恰当地运用这类表达可以使文章语言生动，达到言简意赅、渲染气氛的效果。

在使用这些惯用语时，要注意其固定形式不可随意改动，如其中涉及到的名词的单复数以及介词等。在翻译数字的虚指意义时，不能简单地从字面上去理解，而应该从它们的文化意义的层面上去领会和感悟。

下列句中都含有一个含有数词的短语，你能说出它们的汉语意思吗？

（一）含有基数词one和序数词first的惯用语。（说明：下列各句涉及到的都是one用作基数词的惯用语，不含one用作代词的惯用语）

1. I went through the items on the list one by one.

【句意】我逐条看了清单上的条目。

【解析】one by one 意为“逐个地，逐一地，依次”，在句中作状语。又如：One by one each soldier approached the coffin and gave a final salute. 士兵们逐个走到灵柩前致以最后的敬礼。

2. There are one or two things to sort out before I leave.

【句意】我在走之前还要处理一两件事。

【解析】one or two 意为“少数，一些，一两个”，并非严格 1个或 2个，虚指少量，相当于a few。又如：We’ve had one or two problems—nothing serious. 我们有一些问题，不过没什么大不了的。

3. She is one in a million as a volunteer.

【句意】她是一名万里挑一的志愿者。

【解析】one in a million 意为“万里挑一的人（或物）；不同寻常的人（或物）”，在句中主要作定语或表语。又如：He’s a man in a million. 他是个出类拔萃的人物。

4. We will solve the problem one way or another.

【句意】我们无论如何都会解决这个问题。

【解析】one way or another 意为“无论如何，想方设法；以这样或那样的方式”，在句中用作状语。又如：Everyone can help in one way or another to make our city more beautiful. 每个人都可以以这样或那样的方式帮助我们的城市变得更美丽。

5.It’s a public relations office, a press office and a private office all in one.

【句意】那儿既是公关办公室，也是新闻办公室，又是私人办公室：三合一。

【解析】(all ) in one意为“集……于一身；多功能合一，集多种功能于一体”，在句中作后置定语或表语。又如：She’s a mother and company director in one. 她既是母亲又是公司董事。

6. At one time, this area was covered with thick forests.

【句意】这个地方曾经被茂密森林覆盖。

【解析】at one time 意为“曾经，一度，从前某个时期”，在句中作状语，用于描述过去某个不确定的时间段。又如：At one time 400 men, women and children lived in the village. 曾一度有400个男人、女人和儿童住在这个村子。辨析：at a time意为“每次，一次”，用于描述某个动作或事件发生的频率或数量。如：I can only carry two at a time. 我一次只能带两个。
