Writing a journal entry about living in space

 无生试讲逐字稿(英语写作课)

 Step 1 Lead-in

Good morning, class. Before our lesson, let’s watch a short video. Look at the screen. What can you see in the video? Yes, astronauts floating in space.
Now, I have a question for you. If you travel to space for one day, what will happen to you? Who wants to have a try?
 Oh, this boy, please.
You say you will float everywhere. Great! Good job.
And this girl? You think eating will be hard. Wonderful.
Today, we will learn how to write a journal entry about living in space. Let’s get started.

 Step 2 Pre-writing

First, let’s read the passage on your textbook. Please read it silently and think about three questions on the screen.
Question 1: What makes everyday tasks hard in space?
Question 2: Why do astronauts need to exercise regularly?
Question3: What other things do you know about life on spacecraft?
Okay, time’s up. Let’s answer them one by one.
Who can answer question one? Yes, Lily, please.
She says it is zero gravity. Perfect! You did a good job. Without gravity, everything floats.
Next question, why exercise regularly? Tom, have a try.
Tom says no gravity will make bones and muscles weak, so they must exercise. Great.
The last question. What else do we know?
Yes, we use special shampoo, food needs water, salt and pepper are liquid form. Wonderful.
Now look at this note box on your book. When we write a space journal entry, we can write three parts: what you did, how you felt, what you enjoyed most or least.
A journal entry usually has a date, and we write in the first person, talk about our personal feelings. These are the key points we need to remember.

 Step 3 While-writing

Now, let’s start to draft our journal. Before writing, let’s think about our outline together.
First, the beginning: write the date and introduce that I spent 24 hours on the spacecraft.
Then body part. What can we put in the body?
Question: What activities can we write? Who knows?
Yes, we can write sleeping, cleaning, eating, doing exercise. Good.
Then, how did you feel? Were you excited, surprised or a little scared?
And then, what you enjoyed most or least.
Now look at me. Let me show you one example sentence.
“I was so surprised when I saw my water float in the air.”
Can you find the tense here? Yes, simple past tense. Because this is what you experienced.
Another tip: use some descriptive words to show your feelings. Like amazing, difficult, fun.
Now, here comes my question. What should we pay attention to when writing?
Yes! First person, simple past tense, include the three parts from the notes. Good.
Now you have 5 minutes to write your journal entry. You can use information from the passage. If you meet new words, you can raise your hand.
 ( pause )
Okay, time is up. Please stop writing.

 Step4 Post-writing

Now, let’s do pair work. Exchange your writing with your deskmate. Check your partner’s article. You can check three things:
First, does it have date and first-person narration?
Second, does it include what you did, feelings and your favourite or least favourite thing?
Third, check the tense and spelling mistakes.
After checking, you can give suggestions to improve the writing.
 ( pause )
Who wants to share your journal with us?
 Wow, Jack, please read yours.
 …
Wow, wonderful! You clearly wrote your activities and your feelings. The sentences are smooth. But you can add one more sentence about your feeling at the end. Good job.
 Any other volunteer? Amy, please.
Great! You use many nice adjectives. That makes your writing lively.

 Step5 Summary

Boys and girls, let’s make a summary together. What did we learn today?
We learned how to write a journal entry about space life. A good journal needs a date, first person, your actions and true feelings. We also learned many facts about astronauts’ daily life in zero gravity.

 Step6 Homework

Today’s homework. First, polish your journal entry according to your partner’s advice. Second, search more information about space life and add one more paragraph to your writing.

 Step7 Ending

 Class is over. Goodbye, everyone.

 Teaching Reflection

This writing lesson follows pre-writing, while-writing and post-writing stages. Students can get enough input from the reading passage before writing. The guiding notes help students build the writing outline. However, more support for students with weak writing ability should be provided, such as more sentence patterns. Next time, I will design more sentence frames to help them express ideas better.
