Long long ago, the youngest daughter of Emperor Yan went boating on the Eastern Sea. Unfortunately, a strong wind rose and overturned her boat. She fell into the sea and drowned. Her spiritturned into a little bird, called Jingwei. Jingwei felt sad and angry. She hated the sea for taking her life. Every day, Jingwei flew between the mountain and the sea. She carried small stones and twigs from the mountain and dropped them into the sea. She wanted to fill up the endless sea. The sea laughed at her and said, “Poor little bird! How can you fill me up?” Jingwei replied firmly, “I will keep working day after day. Even if I die, my children will continue this task.”

很久很久以前，炎帝最小的女儿去东海划船。不幸，狂风骤起，掀翻了她的小船。她坠入海中，溺水身亡。

她的灵魂化作一只小鸟，名叫精卫。精卫满心悲愤。她怨恨大海夺走了自己的生命。

精卫每天往返于高山与大海之间。她衔来山上的小石子和细树枝，投进大海。她想要填平这无边无际的大海。

大海嘲笑她说：“可怜的小鸟！你怎么可能把我填平呢？”

精卫坚定地回答：“我会日复一日坚持劳作。就算我死去，我的后代也会继续完成这项使命。”
