B Everyone tries their best in life, and sometimes a few kind words of encouragement can help people realize that their efforts are not in vain (徒劳).Ⅰ remember a time when I was in fifth grade, and I was a very shy girl. 高三英语 第 3 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司There was a drawing competition at my school that day. As everyone started to use their creative ideas to draw, I was only trying to think of something creative that could express my thoughts and emotions. Lost in my own world, I was brought back to reality when my art teacher called my name from behind. She came to me and encouraged me, saying, “Don’t overthink it, just put whatever comes to your mind on the canvas (画布). Do your best, and you will do well.” Taking her words of wisdom to heart, I started my painting. Time flew by, and soon the bell rang, signaling the end of the time limit. We all turned in our canvases for inspection (检查). The next day, the winners of the competition were announced in front of the whole school. To my surprise, I heard my name being called second prize. It was a bolt from the bl ue for me, as I had never dared to dream of winning any prize. Later on, I expressed my gratitude to my art teacher for her words of encouragement and for believing in me. That day, I became aware of my talent and started painting more whenever I had free time. Sometimes, I think that if it weren’t for her words of encouragement, I may have never discovered the talent I have. Overall, this experience taught me the importance of encouraging others and how a few kind words can make a significant impact on someone’s life. 24.What was the author doing when called by the art teacher? A.Organizing a drawing competition. B.Trying to get some creative ideas. C.Painting her work on her canvas. D.Trying to get help from others. 25.What did the author think of the competition? A.Easy. B.Interesting. C.Challenging. D.Encouraging. 26.What do the underlined words “bolt from the blue” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Addiction. B.Puzzlement. C.Disappointment. D.Surprise. 27.What can be a suitable title for the text? A.The Power of Encouragement B.The Importance of Art Competitions C.Overcoming Shyness Through Painting D.Discovering Your Great Natural Ability C Several years ago, Jeremy Clarkson, presenter of the famous BBC television programme Top Gear’, discovered that one of his guests was half German and half Irish. Immediately, he said: “That’s quite a strange combination. It’s like, this must be done absolutely perfectly... tomorrow”. This is a joke about the stereotype (刻板印象) that Germans are efficient and Irish are lazy. Many people could understandably be offended by these kinds of assertions (断言). We do not know every Irish person, so how can we then conclude that every Irish person is lazy? I recently read on a website that Irish business people were described as being ‘generally rather casual’ and ‘more outwardly friendly than many European countries’. German business people, on the other hand, are considered to be very direct and according to the website, they do not need a personal relationship in order to do business. Once you hear advice like this, it becomes easier to understand where jokes like the one in the first paragraph come from. So why do some people disagree with the kind of stereotypes as seen in Clarkson’s joke, but agree when it comes to generalizations (概括)? What is the difference between the two? By definition, a stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. A cultural characteristic, on the other hand, is a pattern of behaviour that is typical of a certain group. 高三英语 第 4 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司So what does this really mean? Stereotypes are simply overstated assumptions about groups of people. Imagine if a tourist visited a small town in Switzerland and saw a number of locals playing the alphorn instrument, and then claimed that Swiss people can play the alphorn. This would be a stereotype! This is an overstated image of the Swiss which is based on one tourist’s experience. If, however, this tourist were to say that the Swiss are very punctual, this could be seen as a cultural characteristic. This is because it is a pattern of behaviour which is very typical in Switzerland: from their transport system to their business meetings. In this way, some people argue that generalizing another culture is not just useful, but important. Politicians always have to be mindful of the cultural characteristics of different countries. By becoming aware of different cultural characteristics, they can avoid causing offence in those cultures. However, others argue that generalizing cultures will always lead to offensive stereotypes. They argue that the best thing we can do is to stop generalizing cultures and start treating people as individuals. All this raises important questions: Can making generalizations about groups of people be a positive thing? Or should we always avoid making broad assumptions about different groups? 28.When he said “It’s like, this must be done absolutely perfectly... tomorrow”, Jeremy Clarkson really meant ________. A.the stereotypes of the Germans and the Irish are not so good B.the combination of half German and half Irish is interesting C.the characteristics of the Germans and the Irish are opposite D.the Germans will do it perfectly tomorrow while the Irish won’t. 29.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.It’s typical of the Swiss to be punctual. B.The Irish people are considered as lazy, direct and casual. C.The Germans are thought to be efficient, friendly and direct. D.The Swiss people can play the alphorn. 30.Politicians think it important to generalize another culture because ________. A.they don’t want to offend other people B.generalizing will lead to offensive stereotypes C.cultural characteristics are better than stereotypes D.they should treat people as individuals 31.The main purpose of this passage is to ________. A.show the importance of making generalizations B.show it is wrong to play jokes on stereotypes of different people C.tell us the differences between stereotypes and cultural characteristics D.discuss whether it is good to make generalizations about groups of people D Singer Liu Genghong is enjoying great popularity recently after posting online fitness videos on TikTok. She had been observing my progress throughout the year and was particularly impressed with my talent in abstract reasoning. One day, after class, she approached me with an intriguing proposal: to represent the school in a regional mathematics competition. Instantly, I hesitated and my mind raced back to a traumatic event from my primary school years-a quiz bee where I had frozen on stage, forgetting everything I had prepared. The memory had stayed with me and left me with a fear of competitive scenarios. Mrs. Zhang seemed to sense my reservations and said, “Life is about facing our fears. Every challenge you encounter is an opportunity to grow. I truly believe you have what it takes to shine.” With her words echoing in my ears and her unwavering belief as a driving force, I decided to face my past demons and take on the competition. The theme for this year was geometry, a branch of mathematics that explores the dimensions of shapes and their features. My chosen topic was a complex theorem, known for its complicated patterns and strong logic. Although a challenging task, the theorem resonated with me deeply. I saw it as a metaphor for life-seemingly complex situations that, with the right perspective, could be simplified and understood. The following weeks were a blur of numbers, shapes, and formulas. I immersed myself in libraries, wrote notes everywhere, and had endless discussions with Mrs. Zhang. My first draft, when presented to her, was met with constructive feedback. “This is a recommendable effort,” she said, “but I believe you can do better. Refine it.” And so, again and again, my presentation evolved. Through this rigorous process, my once paralyzing fear of competition slowly transformed into a burning passion for understanding and exploration. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Several weeks after my final submission, an official-looking envelope arrived at my home. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ The day after the award ceremony, I found myself at the doors of Mrs. Zhang’s classroom. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高三英语 第 9 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司
