M: U...no, of course not.
W: Then why do you live your life with memories of the past on your mind all the time? How can you make new
memories when you are hanging onto the old ones? At least make room in your brain for a few new experiences...
M: I see what you mean. It’s just that things seemed so much easier back then.
W: Well, sure. You’re living yesterday and today in one day. That’s complicated. If you stop worrying about what
you did in the past, you’ll have more energy to devote to something new. Doesn’t that sound easier?
M: I guess. So, we shouldn’t study history, either?
W: That’s different. We have to get good grades in school if we want to get into a good college. But as far as what
we do in our everyday lives, it’s all about the here and now.
M: That’s a pretty cool way to look at it...

C.They are good at smile from ear to ear. D.They are fierce animals.
20.A.Many species in the world may die out.
B.A good example can be followed to preserve wildlife.
C.Women are encouraged to work for zoos.
D.Our world is not safe today.
【答案】18.B 19.A 20.B
When all the animals of a species die out, the whole world loses. That creature is gone forever. Many people
are worried about this happening to a large number of wild animals. They spend time campaigning to help preserve
wildlife. One of the best known preservationists is Joan Emberry. She is an attractive young woman who works for
the San Diego Zoo.
Joan Emberry’s vast knowledge of animals makes her a frequent guest on TV talk shows. She has been on the
"Jonny Carson Show" over forty times. She explains common errors in thinking about wildlife. For example,
gorillas aren’t the fierce, cruel and savage beasts they appear to be. They are really quite shy. Monkeys that smile
aren’t as happy as they seem. In fact, a monkey’s ear-to-ear smile means "watch out". Snakes really help nature by
eating harmful insects. So people should try to protect them. Joan Emberry hopes that once people understand
animals better, they will do their best to preserve them.

Maggie was looking for a chance to do something good during her summer break from college. She wanted to
find an activity that combined her interests and she found the perfect opportunity at a local animal shelter. “I
thought about volunteering and I’ve always loved animals and photography,” she said.
For the past two weeks, Maggie has been taking portraits (肖像) of cats and dogs at an animal shelter in
Kentucky. The idea came to her after she read articles saying that animals with good photos are more likely to get
adopted than those without. “So I just called the shelter and asked if I could come in and they seemed really
grateful.” said Maggie.
Maggie said that the shelter is in a rural area that’s difficult to reach. But since her photos were added to the
shelter’s Facebook page, “they say they can’t believe how many calls they’ve been getting.”
Part of her success, she said, is that she gets to know the dogs before taking their portrait. There’s Blinky. “She
absolutely loves to go out and run and is a super sweet dog that loves taking photos. She just smiles at me and
everything.” said Maggie. There’s also Jersey, a one-year-old female dog that Maggie describes as calm and well-
mannered.
The phenomenon in which pet adopters shun dark coated dogs is called black dog syndrome (综合征). But it
is unclear how much the issue actually affects pet adoptions. A 2002 study found that black fur negatively
influenced adoption rates for dogs. According to the report, Black dogs had the least likelihood of being adopted
compared to dogs of all other colors.
Maggie said at least one of those dogs had been adopted several weeks before. “When I came in today people
at the shelter told me that many people had come in and talked about how the photos made them want to come to
the shelter,” she added proudly.
24.What inspired Maggie to take photos of dogs?
A.Attractive photos of a black dog.
B.Articles on animal adoption.
C.A call from an animal shelter.

D.A part-time job in summer break.
25.What does paragraph 4 show about Maggie?
A.She fully appreciates beauty in nature.
B.She develops professional photography skills.
C.She impresses pet adopters with good manners.
D.She learns about dogs’ personality before photographing them
26.What does the underlined word “shun” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Avoid. B.Rescue. C.Raise. D.Train.
27.What does Maggie say about her photos?
A.They should involve more types of pets.
B.They have won her more business orders.
C.They failed to help a pet find a home.
D.They attracted much public attention for the shelter.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.A 27.D
The idea came to her after she read articles saying that animals with good
photos are more likely to get adopted than those without.(这个想法是在她读到一些文章后产生的,这些文章说,
Part of her success, she said, is that she gets to know the dogs before taking
Maggle
A 2002 study found that black fur negatively influenced adoption rates for
dogs.
故选A项。
根据第三段中的“they say they can’t believe how many calls they’ve been getting.(他们说他
When I came in today people at the shelter told
me that many people had come in and talked about how the photos made them want to come to the shelter,(当我今

Scientists have been surprised and impressed with the long-distance travel of a bird recently, a common
cuckoo (布谷鸟) which flew from southern Africa to Mongolia.
Onon is a common cuckoo. It’s one of 5 cuckoos who were tagged last summer in Mongolia, far to the north
of China. Though cuckoos originally came from Africa, until recently scientists weren’t sure that cuckoos from
Mongolia flew to Africa for the winter.
In June, 2019, scientists attached tiny trackers to five cuckoos. These satellite tags allowed the scientists to
follow the movements of the birds on a map. Sure enough, Onon spent the winter in southern Africa — in Zambia.
This spring, Onon returned to Mongolia, amazing scientists once again with his long-distance flying. In just a
couple of months, Onon flew more than 12,000 kilometers. It crossed 16 countries, flying at an average speed of 60
kilometers per hour.
Long migrations are common among sea birds, but cuckoos are land birds. “It was one of the longest animal
migrations which has been recorded for a land bird,” said Chris Hewson, one of the project’s lead scientists.
At times, Onon stopped for a few hours or a few days. But some of the long stretches, like crossing the Indian
Ocean, had to be done without stopping. The birds have to travel through strong winds and storms, make sure they
find enough to eat, and avoid being eaten themselves.
Luckily, cuckoos seem to have a good sense of weather patterns, allowing them to fatten up as much as
possible right before they leave. They also seem to be good at finding helpful winds that allow them to travel long
distances without getting too tired. Still, flying such long distances isn’t easy. Onon is the only one of the five
tagged cuckoos who made it all the way back to Mongolia.
28.Why were satellite tags attached to five cuckoos?
A.To make them safe. B.To position the birds.
C.To draw a detailed map. D.To observe them in winter.
29.How did scientists feel when knowing Onon returned to Mongolia?
A.Delighted. B.Astonished. C.Puzzled. D.Annoyed.
30.Why is crossing the Indian Ocean mentioned?
A.Because it is very dangerous. B.Because it is well-known.
C.Because it is a place to go. D.Because it is rich in food.
31.What’s the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Cuckoos’ advantages. B.Cuckoos’ senses.
C.Cuckoos’ habits. D.Cuckoos’ will.

In June, 2019, scientists attached tiny trackers to five cuckoos. These
satellite tags allowed the scientists to follow the movements of the birds on a map.(2019年6月,科学家们在五只

This spring, Onon returned to Mongolia, amazing scientists once again with
his long-distance flying.(今年春天,Onon回到蒙古,再一次用他的长途飞行让科学家们惊叹不已。)”

故选A。
Luckily, cuckoos seem to have a good sense of weather patterns, allowing
them to fatten up as much as possible right before they leave. They also seem to be good at finding helpful winds
that allow them to travel long distances without getting too tired.(幸运的是,杜鹃似乎对天气模式有很好的感知,

Now, Tenjen Sherpa, a Nepalese mountain guide, has set a new goal for himself; to become the youngest
person to conquer all the peaks twice.
Last month, together with Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, Tenjen, 35 years old, broke the previous record
for the fastest climb of the 8,000-meter-plus mountains. In just 92 days, they reached the final summit, K2,
surpassing the previous record of 189 days.
Tenjen is now preparing for his next challenge, starting with a climb of Mount Shishapangma in China within
the next two months. He has already successfully climbed seven of the peaks twice and aims to conquer the
remaining seven by next spring.
His journey began in 2016 when he first climbed Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal. Since then, he has made several
similar climbs each year, including four trips to Mount Everest. Particularly, Tenjen and his three brothers also hold
a record as the most siblings to summit Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-tallest mountain, behind Everest

and K2.
Tenjen started working as a mountain guide to back his family. In April, he joined Harila’s expedition to
Mount Shıshapangma, hired by the Kathmandu-based company Seven Summits Treks. Together, they continued
their journey, conquering the rest of the peaks.
Tenjen plans to climb Shishapangma for the second time in the upcoming fall, carrying pictures of a deceased
brother who never had the opportunity to conquer this mountain. He intends to bury these images at the
mountaintop.
Tenjen told Associated Press that Sherpas do not get enough government recognition for their hard work.“It is
not possible to just continue climbing mountains as you grow older, so what else is there than to think of migrating
abroad,” Tenjen pointed out.
Tenjen never attended school growing up. He has difficulty reading and writing. But, living in Kathmandu,
Nepal’s capital, his children are able to get an education. Tenjen thinks, though, that since more children will be
growing up in cities in the future, they will not have the skills to become Sherpas.
32.What is Tenjen’s new goal?
A.To climb all the mountains twice. B.To climb Mount Everest alone.
C.To break the record with Harila.. D.To set a new peak-climbing record.
33.Why did Tenjen become a mountain guide initially?
A.To support his family. B.To break climbing records.
C.To explore the world’s mountains. D.To join an expedition with Norwegians.
34.What does the underlined word“deceased”mean in Paragraph 6?
A.Injured. B.Late. C.Disabled. D.Upset.
35.What is Tenjen concerned about?
A.Children will be lacking in Sherpas’ skills.
B.Children will have no access to education.
C.Children will face increasing competition.
D.Children will struggle for job opportunities.

because of the Internet, you may be on your way to an Internet addiction. You might fear you’re the only one who
has experienced that feeling. 36 Luckily, there are some ways to avoid living your life in front of the
computer.
37
More and more people in the world are becoming addicted to the Internet, and you are not the only one with
this problem. So do not be embarrassed. Just be brave to admit that you are on your way to an Internet addiction.
And then find others with the same problem and help each other beat it.
Set aside limited time for computer use.
Make sure not to turn it on too many times a week. If you have a laptop, make sure to put it somewhere that
you can remember but not somewhere that you see every day. Try keeping the lid closed when you are not using it.
38 If you have a desktop PC, try not to go near it or put something over it like a sheet.
Call people instead of sending instant messages or texts.
If you are free on weekends, call friends and ask them to go outside to do something you enjoy, like playing a
sport. This will take your mind off the computer. 39
Use an alarm clock or timer (计时器).
Before using your computer, decide on a time limit such as 30 minutes. Set the clock or timer and make sure

根据for over 100 years可知,使用现在完成时,且that指
故填has
been performed。
has become
填What。
故填in。
have the honor of doing sth.
故填the。
moving。
填to inspire。

Contrary to what most people believe, busking (卖艺) is legal in the UK. But you need to have a license to do
it. And when you’re the one of the few who has got a license to busk you can only busk in certain places. Plus, your
“salary” is dependent on how much is given to you by the public. Buskers can earn anywhere from £20 to £50 per
hour and there are some with a goal of reaching £100 per hour. But it varies day by day, so every pence and pound
matters to them. There are times though, when buskers or good people in general recognize when someone needs
the money more than them. That was the case with Liv Harland.
Liv Harland is a singer from York. Scotland, who’s been busking for about five years now. She said when she
first started out, she was so nervous that she hid in an alleyway (小巷). Now she’s so used to busking that she can
do it in any location. When she sings, some people there will drop money in her bag as tips.
In Scotland, there are around 34.000 homeless people in the country at present. COVID-19 and the energy
crisis have made their life more difficult. Most of them are out of work and unable to pay the rent. The people with
nowhere to go are forced to do what they can to survive. They go begging in the street, and some even eat food
thrown into dustbins. Faced with such a situation, Liv always lends a helping hand.
One morning, Liv was busking in a busy area in York when she noticed a homeless man digging through the
garbage cans near by. After careful observation. she found the man was searching them for food.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1: Liv thought she wouldn’t have him eating garbage at that moment. Moved by compassion, she
stopped her performance, walked over to the man, and offered him the hot cup of coffee she had just bought for
herself. Along with it, she handed him a portion of the sandwich she was saving for lunch. The man’s eyes lit up
with gratitude as he accepted her kindness, and for a brief moment, his hardships seemed to ease. Liv felt a warm
rush of fulfillment-better than any amount of money she could earn that day. She realized that sharing with
someone in desperate need was a performance of the heart that no audience could match.
Paragraph 2: A few seconds after Liv went back to singing, a young guy came over to her bag. Instead of the
usual few coins, he dropped in a crisp £20 note, giving her an approving nod and a smile that seemed to
acknowledge her act of generosity. Surprised and touched by the gesture, Liv sang with even more passion, her
voice reaching out to the bustling passersby. It was as if her good deed had created a ripple effect, inspiring others
to be more giving. That day, not only did Liv help someone in need, but she also experienced the contagious nature
of kindness, as her audience’s generosity began to reflect her own.
