D.Talking with famous artists about sculpture. B Maggie was looking for a chance to do something good during her summer break from college. She wanted to find an activity that combined her interests and she found the perfect opportunity at a local animal shelter. “I thought about volunteering and I’ve always loved animals and photography,” she said. For the past two weeks, Maggie has been taking portraits (肖像) of cats and dogs at an animal shelter in Kentucky. The idea came to her after she read articles saying that animals with good photos are more likely to get adopted than those without. “So I just called the shelter and asked if I could come in and they seemed really grateful.” said Maggie. Maggie said that the shelter is in a rural area that’s difficult to reach. But since her photos were added to the shelter’s Facebook page, “they say they can’t believe how many calls they’ve been getting.” Part of her success, she said, is that she gets to know the dogs before taking their portrait. There’s Blinky. “She absolutely loves to go out and run and is a super sweet dog that loves taking photos. She just smiles at me and everything.” said Maggie. There’s also Jersey, a one-year-old female dog that Maggie describes as calm and well- mannered. The phenomenon in which pet adopters shun dark coated dogs is called black dog syndrome (综合征). But it is unclear how much the issue actually affects pet adoptions. A 2002 study found that black fur negatively influenced adoption rates for dogs. According to the report, Black dogs had the least likelihood of being adopted compared to dogs of all other colors. Maggie said at least one of those dogs had been adopted several weeks before. “When I came in today people at the shelter told me that many people had come in and talked about how the photos made them want to come to the shelter,” she added proudly. 24.What inspired Maggie to take photos of dogs? A.Attractive photos of a black dog. B.Articles on animal adoption. C.A call from an animal shelter. D.A part-time job in summer break. 25.What does paragraph 4 show about Maggie? D.Train. 27.What does Maggie say about her photos? A.They should involve more types of pets. B.They have won her more business orders. C.They failed to help a pet find a home. D.They attracted much public attention for the shelter. C Scientists have been surprised and impressed with the long-distance travel of a bird recently, a common cuckoo (布谷鸟) which flew from southern Africa to Mongolia. Onon is a common cuckoo. It’s one of 5 cuckoos who were tagged last summer in Mongolia, far to the north of China. Though cuckoos originally came from Africa, until recently scientists weren’t sure that cuckoos from Mongolia flew to Africa for the winter. In June, 2019, scientists attached tiny trackers to five cuckoos. These satellite tags allowed the scientists to follow the movements of the birds on a map. Sure enough, Onon spent the winter in southern Africa — in Zambia. This spring, Onon returned to Mongolia, amazing scientists once again with his long-distance flying. In just a couple of months, Onon flew more than 12,000 kilometers. It crossed 16 countries, flying at an average speed of 60 kilometers per hour. Long migrations are common among sea birds, but cuckoos are land birds. “It was one of the longest animal migrations which has been recorded for a land bird,” said Chris Hewson, one of the project’s lead scientists. At times, Onon stopped for a few hours or a few days. But some of the long stretches, like crossing the Indian Ocean, had to be done without stopping. The birds have to travel through strong winds and storms, make sure they find enough to eat, and avoid being eaten themselves. Luckily, cuckoos seem to have a good sense of weather patterns, allowing them to fatten up as much as possible right before they leave. They also seem to be good at finding helpful winds that allow them to travel long distances without getting too tired. Still, flying such long distances isn’t easy. Onon is the only one of the five tagged cuckoos who made it all the way back to Mongolia. 28.Why were satellite tags attached to five cuckoos? 试卷第6页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司更多全科试卷及资料在网盘群,请关注公众号:高中试卷君 A.To make them safe. B.To position the birds. C.To draw a detailed map. D.To observe them in winter. 29.How did scientists feel when knowing Onon returned to Mongolia? A.Delighted. B.Astonished. C.Puzzled. D.Annoyed. 30.Why is crossing the Indian Ocean mentioned? A.Because it is very dangerous. B.Because it is well-known. C.Because it is a place to go. D.Because it is rich in food. 31.What’s the last paragraph mainly about? A.Cuckoos’ advantages. B.Cuckoos’ senses. C.Cuckoos’ habits. D.Cuckoos’ will. D Now, Tenjen Sherpa, a Nepalese mountain guide, has set a new goal for himself; to become the youngest person to conquer all the peaks twice. Last month, together with Norwegian climber Kristin Harila, Tenjen, 35 years old, broke the previous record for the fastest climb of the 8,000-meter-plus mountains. In just 92 days, they reached the final summit, K2, surpassing the previous record of 189 days. Tenjen is now preparing for his next challenge, starting with a climb of Mount Shishapangma in China within the next two months. He has already successfully climbed seven of the peaks twice and aims to conquer the remaining seven by next spring. His journey began in 2016 when he first climbed Mount Dhaulagiri in Nepal. Since then, he has made several similar climbs each year, including four trips to Mount Everest. Particularly, Tenjen and his three brothers also hold a record as the most siblings to summit Mount Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-tallest mountain, behind Everest and K2. Tenjen started working as a mountain guide to back his family. In April, he joined Harila’s expedition to Mount Shıshapangma, hired by the Kathmandu-based company Seven Summits Treks. Together, they continued their journey, conquering the rest of the peaks. Tenjen plans to climb Shishapangma for the second time in the upcoming fall, carrying pictures of a deceased brother who never had the opportunity to conquer this mountain. He intends to bury these images at the mountaintop. Tenjen told Associated Press that Sherpas do not get enough government recognition for their hard work.“It is not possible to just continue climbing mountains as you grow older, so what else is there than to think of migrating 试卷第7页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司更多全科试卷及资料在网盘群,请关注公众号:高中试卷君 abroad,” Tenjen pointed out. Tenjen never attended school growing up. He has difficulty reading and writing. But, living in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, his children are able to get an education. Tenjen thinks, though, that since more children will be growing up in cities in the future, they will not have the skills to become Sherpas. 32.What is Tenjen’s new goal? And when you’re the one of the few who has got a license to busk you can only busk in certain places. Plus, your “salary” is dependent on how much is given to you by the public. Buskers can earn anywhere from £20 to £50 per hour and there are some with a goal of reaching £100 per hour. But it varies day by day, so every pence and pound matters to them. There are times though, when buskers or good people in general recognize when someone needs the money more than them.
