College Podcast (播客) Challenge Open for Entries
The College Podcast Challenge is back for its third year, in the fall. Entries will open on Sept. 1, 2023 and
close at the end of the year on Dec. 31, 2023 to give students the entire fall academic term. And, as with last year’s,
the college con test will award a $5,000 grand prize scholarship and $500 prizes to finalists.
One big change this year: the college con test will be open to students of all ages doing an associate’s or
bachelor’s degree, as well as those who are set to graduate in 2023. College podcasters can enter your own work,
without going through your school or professor, as long as you’re 18 years or older.
For the college con test this year, our basic guidelines remain pretty much the same: students can create a
podcast about any topic they wish to explore. Some themes we’ve seen over and over include questions on identity
and how young people fit in. Your podcast can also be in many different formats: an interview, narrative (叙述的)
story or even investigative reporting. You can do it by yourself or with your entire class.
One important rule to keep in mind is that the maximum length of your podcast is eight minutes, and longer
entries will be disqualified.
For more tips, advice and the latest updates on this year’s contest, make sure to sign up for our newsletter. We
can’t wait to hear your stories!
21.When can you submit your entry?
A.In January. B.In February. C.In August. D.In November.

When I was a girl of eight, living in a town, I used to work for Mrs. White, an elderly lady. She paid me very
little for my work, because she didn’t have much money. She did, however, promise to give me a Christmas
present. The girls I played with had baseball gloves, bicycles and ice skates, and I was so eager to acquire any one
of these. On Christmas morning, Mrs. White gave me a little package which could hardly hold anything. I was
painfully disappointed but she told me it was a kind of magic. My disappointment turned into curiosity.
With great excitement I opened the package, only to find a pile of ten sheets of black paper inside, each
labeled in colorful letters, Carbon Paper Regal Premium. I didn’t know what it was. “Is it magic?” I asked. My
Aunt Karen, who was a school teacher, answered, “It really is!” She took two pieces of white paper and placed
between them one of the black sheets from the box. Then, with a hard pencil, she wrote my name on the upper
sheet. Removing it and the Carbon Paper Regal Premium, she handed me the second sheet, which her pencil had in
no way touched. There was my name!
I was enthralled. I wrote and wrote, using up whole tablets until the last piece of black paper was used up. It
was a game I didn’t want to end. I was very happy with my special gift. I can honestly say that, in that one moment,
I understood as much about printing, copying words and the mystery of spreading ideas as I have learned in the
remaining half-century of my life.
I hope that this year some boys and girls will receive, from thoughtful adults who really love them, gifts that
will shock them. It is such gifts and such experiences — usually costing little or nothing — that transform a life and
lend it a motivation that may continue for decades.

A recently published paper finds that following a Mediterranean diet for three weeks can help reduce
depression and anxiety among young adults.
In the study, participants in the test group were instructed to eat about six more servings of fruits and
vegetables per week, compared with the control group. In addition, they were told to get per week three servings of
fish besides three recommended servings per day of whole grains. As for milk, the recommendation was three
servings per week, unsweetened. Participants were also asked to consume three tablespoons of nuts and seeds per
week, as well as two tablespoons of olive oil per day.
“One of the shortcomings of nutrition science is that it often relies on asking people to recall what they ate and
how they felt in the past. Given our failing memories, these data can be unreliable,” says Heather Francis, one of
the researchers. “But our study included a device, called spectrophotometer, which can detect the degree of
yellowness in the skin, which can precisely monitor the intake of carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), which the participants
get from their food.”
“We have highly consistent and extensive evidence from around the globe linking Mediterranean diets to
reduced depression risk,” says Felice Jacka, a professor at Deakin University in Australia who was not involved in
the study. “I think the next step is to show how diets can reduce depression.”
However, it’s almost impossible to unravel how diet changes may help improve mental health according to
the strict standard in medical research, where participants do not know that they are part of the group assigned to
take the medicine or the placebo (安慰剂).
“In a diet study, there’s no way to ‘blind’ the participants so that they don’t know if they’re getting the
‘medicine’ or ‘placebo’,” says Heather Francis. “And research has shown that if people are told that they’re doing
something that may make them less depressed, they will indeed report less depression. That’s known as the placebo
effect.”
28.Each day, the young adults following the Mediterranean diet were instructed to eat ________.

On August 22, two national consumer groups, the China Consumers Association and the Association of China
Commercial Enterprise Management, called on beverage retailers across the country to clarify with consumers
about the necessity and the amount of ice cubes added to their drinks.
The two groups said they are launching an “ice-breaking” campaign to urge retailers to respect consumers’
rights of knowing, choice and fair trade.
The groups’ call comes after media reports revealed that beverages served in some shops consist of a large
amount of ice. In one case, a consumer in Nantong, Jiangsu province, bought two cups of coffee from popular chain
beverage retailer Luckin Coffee and found that more than two-thirds of the cup was still filled with ice after the
customer finished drinking the coffee. The customer complained in social media, questioning if the retailer was
selling ice rather than coffee.
A customer service worker from Luckin Coffee told the newspaper that beverages from the company are
strictly made according to the recipes and procedures, and iced drinks can’t be made with less ice. The worker
further said that customers may choose iceless drinks instead. The consumer groups said that retailers should
respect consumers’ rights of knowing by taking the initiative to ask about the amount of ice that customers want,
and explain if certain products have to be made with fixed amounts of ice.
Retailers should also provide choices such as “extra ice”, “regular ice”, “less ice” or “iceless” for customers to
choose, or simply separate ice cubes from drinks to let customers decide themselves, in order to respect their rights
of choice, the groups said.
Moreover, retailers should be veracious in promoting their products and clearly mark that customers can ask

Summer is the swimming season. As fun as a swimming pool can be, it’s also a major safety risk if you don’t
take the appropriate precautions (预防措施). Here are some tips for a safe swimming season.
36 If children or inexperienced swimmers are in the pool, it’s very important to have close
supervision. Supervisors should be an adult who can swim well and knows how to save others in a swimming pool.
They mustn’t be distracted with their cellphone, or a conversation with another adult. They must take that role very
seriously. 37 . More children aged 1 to 4 die from drowning than any other causes of death.
Keep a variety of flotation devices in and around the pool like a life jacket plus pool noodles or a paddle
board. That helps when accidents happen. 38 .

come from careless diving. This happens more among teenagers and young adults. Prevent this by making sure
people are only using existing diving boards that are designed to dive into deep water.
Another risk is a condition called “dry drowning”. This happens after a near-drowning event in which water

but can be fatal (致命的).

When I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was
only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve.
Their clothes were not expensive but very clean. They were well behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two
behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they
would see that night in low voices.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives. A

father and mother were at the head of the line, standing hand in hand.
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight
children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped and the man’s lips began
to shake. The man leaned a little closer and asked, “ how much did you say?”
The ticket lady again gave the price. Obviously the man didn’t have enough money. How was he supposed to
turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them all to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. I felt sorry for them.
