Electric Shocks Can Be Fatal
Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than
3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their home. A
smaller number of people are killed after contact with power lines
outside the home. Electric shocks can cause a person’s heart or
breathing to stop, can also cause burns and are potentially fatal. It
is essential for people to learn basic first-aid techniques to deal
with such emergencies.
What to do?
· If you are the first person to reach someone who has had an
electric shock, don’t touch him/her!
· If they are still holding the appliance(家用电器) that has
given them a shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the
power at its source. Under no circumstances will you try to move the
applianc e wit h you r hand !
· If you can’t turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a
broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or
the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded
newspaper.
· The victim must remain lying down. If they are unconscious,
victims should be placed on their side. But they should not be moved
if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is
absolutely necessary.
· It is essential to maintain the victim’s body heat, so make
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else.
If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth rescue
breathing. Keep the victim’ s head low until professional help
arrives.
· If the electric shock has been caused by an external power
line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid
are much greater.
21. What kind of text is it?
A. An advertisement.
B. A horror story.
C. A news report.
D. First-aid emergency advice.
22. What does the underlined sentence imply?
A. You should move the appliance that caused it.
B. You should pick up the appliance and turn off the electricity.
C. It is very dangerous to touch the appliance with your hands.
D. It is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hands.
23. What should you do when a person gets an electric shock?
A. Separate the victim from the appliance and let him/her sit up.
B. Keep the victim warm and help him/her breathe again.
C. Move the victim onto his/her side if he/she has got neck injuries.
D. Keep the victim’s head high until professional help arrives.

My neighbour Orlando is a paramedic. He and his wife are some of
the nicest people I have ever met. A few years back we started this
sort of “favour war”, where one of us would do something for the
other, such as shovelling(铲) his driveway or helping him build a
shed, and next time the other would try to top it with another
favour.
Yesterday morning there was maybe 2 or 3 feet of snow on the
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂ground and I remembered he shovelled my driveway for me last
snowfall. So I took out my shovel and took care of both our sidewalks
and driveways because it was my turn to do a favour back. It took a
while but I finished and got into my car for work. What I didn’t
realise was that Orlando had to work that day too.
Fast-forward to this morning I got a knock on my door. It was
him. He immediately shook my hand and informed me that because I
shovelled his driveway and sidewalk for him, he was able to get to
work earlier. As soon as he started his shift, a call came through
that a young boy was in a medical emergency. Luckily he and his
partner were only about 2 minutes away, but the next closest
ambulance was in 10 minutes. This kid did not have 10 minutes. He
barely had 2 minutes. Because my neighbour got to work sooner, the
young boy got to live his life.
This isn’t a brag(吹嘘). This is to inform others that even the
smallest favours can have the biggest impacts. It wasn’t too much of
trouble to shovel his driveway for him, but because I did, the young
kid got to see his family again, go back to school again, talk to his
friends again and live his life.
24. What can we know about the writer and Orlando?
A. They once had a conflict.
B. They signed a favourable agreement.
C. They favour shovelling snow together.
D. They are always ready to help each other.
25. Who saved the boy before it was too late?
A. The writer.
B. The boy’s parents.
C. Orlando and his wife.
D. Orlando and his partner.
26. Why did Orlando knock on the author’s door in the morning?
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂A. To tell him to clear up the snow.
B. To tell him to do a favour back.
C. To express his thanks to him.
D. To say he started his shift.
27. What does the writer intend to tell us?
A. Never ask for trouble.
B. No favour is too small.
C. One cannot always be lucky.
D. Don’t lose heart in an emergency.

How can fire or hot things be a danger in the house? Matches, of
course, are always dangerous in the hands of young children. A wind
comes, sparks are blown onto the roof of a house, and the whole
building may be burnt to the ground before you can even call the Fire
Brigade. Kerosene lamps(煤油灯), too, can be very dangerous. Quite
recently there was a bad accident in a village house. The mosquito
net over a baby’s bed was blown against a lamp and caught fire. The
bedclothes and even the clothes of the baby were burnt before the
fire was discovered. Besides, it’s very dangerous to burn wood or
garbage next to your house.
Young children often reach up to a table to take a pot down by
its handle. If the pot is full of boiling water, you can guess what
will happen. Similarly, when a baby’s bath is prepared, cold water
should be put in first. If any hot water has to be used, it should be
put into the bath after the cold water but not before it.
Many fireworks can lead to blindness and other injuries. Wooden
spears or swords should be used only by children with sense enough
not to injure other people.
Very young children often have to be watched very carefully. They
put everything they find into their mouths to see whether it can be
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂eaten. Medicines have to be put out of their reach. A pill or some
ointment which might be harmless to a grown-up can be very harmful to
a baby.
If there are stairs in your house, do not put a mat at the top of
them unless you want to crash down the stairs on your shoulder or
head. Make sure, too, that your mats do not have curly edges. These
are dangerous for the very young and the very old: those who cannot
see as well as we can. If there are any deep holes in or near your
garden, see that they are filled in or properly covered up.
This blacklist of the dangers in and near a house is not
complete, but it is enough to remind you to be careful. If you want
to take a risk, do it on the sports field or, when you are older, by
serving your country in the Army.
28. A house fire can start with .
A. children playing with matches
B. burning rubbish near the house
C. the mosquito net being blown against a lamp
D. all the above
29. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the text?
A. Children may get injured when playing games.
B. Children may put something harmful into their mouths.
C. Children may play with matches and cause fire.
D. Children may get hurt when reaching up to a pot full of boiling
water.
30. What does the writer suggest people do?
A. Put a mat on the stairs.
B. Use mats without curly edges.
C. Hide the mats so that the very young and the very old won’t see
them.
D. Use a mat to cover the holes in or near the garden.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂31. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To warn people not to let children play by themselves.
B. To show that fire or hot things can be a danger in the house.
C. To remind people to be careful with the dangers in and near the
house.
D. To tell people the mat is another danger in the house.

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illnesses or
injuries until more skilful medical treatment is available. It may
save a life or improve certain vital signs including the pulse,
temperature, a clear airway( 气 道 ), and breathing. In minor
emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim’s condition from turning
worse and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as
quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few
minutes can make a difference between complete recovery and loss of
life.
First-aid measures depend upon a victim’ s needs and the
provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in
an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving
a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent
spinal(脊柱的) injury and paralysis(瘫痪).
Despite the variety of injuries possible, several principles of
first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for
professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be
reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for
permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking
other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details
of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given,
and pre-existing conditions such as diabetes( 糖 尿 病 ) or heart
trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical bracelet or card
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene
becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move
the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine
whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating
a victim’s condition is known by the acronym(首字母缩写词) ABC,
which stands for:
A—Airway: Is it open and clear?
B—Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen, and feel for
breathing.
C— Circulation: Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding
externally? Check skin colour and temperature for additional
indications of circulation problems.
32. Which of the following is NOT the result of first aid?
A. Saving a victim’s life.
B. Relieving a victim from pain.
C. Preventing a victim’s condition from getting worse.
D. Helping a person avoid sudden illnesses or injuries.
33. What should you do before offering first aid to a victim?
A. Make sure what to do and what not to do.
B. Refer to all kinds of handbooks on first aid.
C. Remove the ring or bracelet he/she may be wearing.
D. Take him/her to a hospital at once.
34. What should you do first when giving first aid?
A. Remove him/her from the accident scene.
B. Turn him/her over.
C. Call for professional medical help.
D. Examine him/her carefully.
35. You may assess a victim’s condition by all the following EXCEPT
.
A. checking whether there is a pulse
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂B. looking, listening and feeling for breathing
C. replacing his/her medical bracelet or card
D. examining whether the airway is open and clear

Camping without a campfire is not camping at all. Late-night
conversations and games around the campfire are essential for a
pleasant camping experience. However, you ought to be aware of the
fact that camping with a campfire is not all about fun. 3 6 If you
are planning to set up a campfire, or if you are planning to cook
during camping, you should remember some fire safety tips.
Choose a campsite which has a campfire pit(深坑). 37 If there
is no fire pit, set up your own. However, you should be careful not
to place the fire pit near your camping tent. When you set up a
campfire, make sure that you put the campfire materials in the right
order. This can help you make sure that there will be no flying
debris(碎片) once you light your fire. Put the light materials first
such as paper or dry leaves. 3 8 Finally, make sure that you place
stones around the campfire pit. Never burn plastics or other
poisonous materials, which will disturb your neighbouring campground
guests. It will also significantly pollute the air and promote the
risk of fire spreads. 39 Use it only when all the other fire-
making options fail.
40 Before you leave your campfire or before you go to bed,
make sure that it is completely out. Leaving fire unattended runs
high risks of forest fires and the like.

Early in the morning I went to the ocean beach to play my guitar.
The usually crowded beach was deserted except for two people. On one
side of the boardwalk(木板人行道) was a woman who was cleaning the
beach with a broom; on the other side was a lone figure sitting and
staring to sea. I chose a spot between them and began to play.
As I played, the woman with the broom swept her way right next to
me. She stopped sweeping and leaned on her broom, smiling at me. She
appeared to be homeless with dirty mismatched clothes.
“You sure play beautiful music,” she said. “I think my friend
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂would like your music. I want to hire you to play for her.” She
pointed to the lone figure staring out at the ocean, then produced a
few coins from her pocket. “I don’t have much, and I know you’re
worth a lot, but if I give this to you, will you play a song for her?
She’s going through a lot. I know the music will make her feel
better.”
I told her I’d be happy to play for free.
As we walked over to her friend, the Broom Lady told me that her
friend had not talked for weeks. We approached, and the Broom Lady
introduced me, “Annie, I got you a present to cheer you up. It’s a
guitar man who is going to play a song specially for you.”
Annie didn’t move. She was wearing dark sunglasses and had an
old coat pulled up to cover most of her face.
I sat next to Annie and played. As I played I put every thought
into having good things happen for this woman. I played for quite a
while.
Suddenly, Annie turned towards me and said, “You make it so
beautiful. I can feel it inside my heart.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
(2) 请按如下格式作答。
She took off her sunglasses.
When I stopped playing and looked up, I was shocked to see a small
crowd around us.

答案:
Dea r Tom ,
Last Friday, our school invited Doctor Lin Hai to give us a
lecture on how to give first aid in case an accident happens. Doctor
Lin said that if an accident happens, we should first check whether
the accident scene is safe or not. If it isn’t, move to a safe place
immediately. Furthermore, we should call an ambulance at once if
someone is seriously injured. Besides, Doctor Lin offered us a lot of
detailed first-aid treatment and safety tips, which are easy to learn
but very useful and practical.
Thanks to his lecture, now I have a better understanding of what
to do in case of an accident.

第二节(满分25分)
She took off her sunglasses. I could tell a faint glow pierced
the dark clouds of frustration in her eyes. I gestured to her to sit
opposite to me and she slowly moved closer. I kept on playing the
guitar, trying to reveal my sympathy, understanding and comfort
through the soft melodies. It seemed that she couldn’t but recall
the bitter and severe days she went through as tears streamed down
her cheeks. She didn’t wipe them off but had them falling down, as
if all her worries and sorrows went away as well.
When I stopped playing and looked up, I was shocked to see a
small crowd around us. They looked at me with enthusiasm, bursting
into applause. Annie stood up and clapped her hands too. Several
women, having kept an eye on her, approached and hugged her,
whispering some encouraging words before they left. Refreshed and
relieved, Annie threw her arms around my neck and uttered, “Thank
you for your music”, which assured the Broom Lady of her return to
normal speech. I had put on numerous shows to different audiences,
but this remained the most healing and rewarding one.
