Feeling tired? Under too much stress? Well, you may want to try Yoga. It’s what more and more people have
been turning to to release the trouble of modern life. Practically unheard of in the West until 50 years ago, Yoga has
become one of the most popular health trends around the world, including China. If you search for Yoga on line in
Chinese, lots of pages are there to see, most of which are main pages of Yoga clubs. In order to keep fit and lose
weight, many girls spend more than 1000 yuan taking part in Yoga classes every month.
However, are you really ready for it? There are several things you need to know before you really take it.
First, do not force your body too much. Yoga has many difficult poses. They are beautiful and worth boasting
if you could finish them. But if you force yourself to do as exactly as an experienced Yoga teacher does, you may
hurt your body, instead of strengthening it. Do you remember you original purpose for playing Yoga? It is self
-building, not competing.
Second, do some research about the Yoga class that you are to register. Yoga is new in China and there are not
so many certificated well-trained Yoga teachers. Some not well-organized clubs just find someone who learns a
little Yoga and certificate them. But be aware, a non-eligible teacher might wrongly guide you and you could not
benefit from the classes much except that they force you to exercise your body a bit. Considering about the large
amount of money you invest in it, it’s worth and reasonable to make sure the teachers in the club are qualified
before you join.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Third, it would be better to learn something about nutrition when you practice Yoga. In the very beginning,
Yoga was part of the Vedas, bible of the traditional Indian philosophy. So it could be regarded as a kind of lifestyle.
When you have decided to care for your body, why not feed it properly? In fact, good clubs have their own
nutritionists.
Anyhow, make sure you are ready before you act. The fashion may change quickly. But what benefits is still
good for us.

2. The underlined word “non-eligible” in the fourth paragraph most probably means ________.
A. inexperienced B. unqualified
C. impatient D. unkind
3. From the advice offered by the author, we can conclude that ________.
A. Yoga has nothing to do with culture B. Yoga is somehow easy to exercise
C. many people learn Yoga in order to compete D. not all the Yoga clubs have standard teachers

Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person’s health and happiness. Researchers have found
that inadequate sleep and tiredness increase a person’s risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as
obesity, high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Now, a new study has found that getting enough sleep is also the
key to improving academic performance.
Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was not trying to find the relationship
between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class. Instead, the
professor hoped the wrist-worn devices (装置), which track a person’s physical activity, would show a connection
between exercise and academic achievement.
While Gross’s data showed no relationship between these two factors (因素), the study found something
surprising. As the researchers were analyzing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship
between the average amount of sleep a student got and their results in the course’s 11 quizzes, three midterm tests,
and the final exam.
Even more interesting, it was not enough for students to just head to bed early the night before a test. Instead,
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂it’s the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.
The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in early hours of the
morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher- performing student. “When you go
to bed matters,” Gross says, “If you go to bed at 10, or 12, or 1 at night, and sleep for seven hours, your
performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same
seven hours. So, quantity isn’t everything. ”
Perhaps the most interesting was the huge effect that small differences in sleep patterns had on the students’
grades. The entire course grades for students averaging six and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower
than students who averaged just one hour more sleep. Similarly, students who changed their bedtime by even one
hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtimes.
Who knew getting A’s just required some extra ZZZ’s?
4. Based on his original goals, which best describes Professor Gross’s research findings?
A. Complete. B. Accidental.
C. Convincing. D. Doubtful.
5. Who were the people taking part in the study?
A. University student athletes. B. Professor Gross’s own students.
C. Middle school chemistry students. D. Volunteers from different universities.
6. How did Professor Gross’s team measure academic performance?
A. Making the students wear a special watch.
B. Giving the students regular after-class quizzes.
C. Using students’ university entrance test results.
D. Using the students’ normal test and quiz grades.
7. Based on the study’s findings, who is likely to perform best academically?
A. A person who sleeps for a total of 7 hours each night.
B. A person who sleeps from 11 p. m. to 6 a. m. each day.
C. A person whose normal bedtime changes between 9 p. m. and 12 p. m.
D. A person who has a good night’s sleep the night before an important test.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age.
But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from
camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur

The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬
乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He
was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes.
He also sent six engravings(版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes
Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit.
He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to
Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape(风
景) painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with
Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could
read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said,"Those two books were my companions by day,
and under my pillow at night."While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his
introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia.
B. Williams’ influence on Benjamin.
C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist.
D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington.
9. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 suggest?
A. The cat would be closely watched.
B. The cat would get some medical care.
C. Benjamin would leave his home shortly.
D. Benjamin would have real brushes soon.
10. What did Pennington do to help Benjamin develop his talent?
A. He took him to see painting exhibitions.
B. He provided him with painting materials.
C. He sent him to a school in Philadelphia.
D. He taught him how to make engravings.
11. Williams’ two books helped Benjamin to _____________.

From self-driving cars to care-bots(care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has
long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost
50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence continues
to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in
how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia
Pacific.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use
artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia
Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates.
But the report states: “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs — just changing what people
do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
“The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly
challenge big companies,” it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were
optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists
pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith,
the report’s co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always
been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of
things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft’s Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
12. We can infer from the text that in the future _____.
A. people will face many difficulties
B. people will take up more creative jobs
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. artificial intelligence will threaten people's lives
D. most jobs will be done in traditional workplaces
13. According to the report, _____.
A. people won't necessarily lose jobs
B. big companies will face fewer challenges
C. small companies will win against big companies
D. most people will become interested in technology
14. What is the attitude of most experts in artificial intelligence and robotics to the future?
A. Mixed B. Worried.
C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
15. Jonathan Grudin’s words in the last paragraph suggest that _____.
A. there will be enough jobs for people
B. things will change a lot in a few years
C. many people will become unemployed
D. technology will totally change future jobs

Peter had been saving money for a very long time. He was struggling so much that all he wished was to go
abroad and make more money. So when he reached the required amount he needed for the expenses, he travelled to
a foreign country to make a good living.
Upon getting there, Peter worked very hard and finally built his own business. After years of hard work, he
became a millionaire. He called his family and informed them that they would not have to worry about money any
more for he would be sending them enough and everyone would be happy.
He couldn’t have been proven more wrong!
Five years later, as the business grew, Peter had no time to stay at home and was always busy running his
business and attending meetings.
He missed his family. He hadn’t seen them in four years. Every year he promised himself that he would go and
visit them but that promise was broken at every attempt to accomplish it for one business reason or another. But his
family were understanding and never complained. Peter had thought that money would make his life good but now
that he had more money than he ever imagined, he was not happy. He was tired of trying to pretend that he was
happy with his projects and work.
Sometimes he wanted to leave the country and the business and go back to his old life, but the thought of not
being able to survive if he left his business stopped him.
When he met his family a few years later, it was only for a few days. His family wanted him to stay longer but
he didn’t. At the same time, he was given the most difficult and challenging task during his career whose
completion would not only improve his image but also result in him earning millions of dollars. This work kept him
quite engaged that he gave his mind wholly to the task. His hard work resulted in great profit and he was more
successful than ever before.
