At 17,I started my career here in America, and by the age of 18,I started my first charity organization.I
went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of
the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed away in 2010 from leukemia (白血

In the short time Steve and Zach had been inside their tent packing their tools,wind-blown flame had
skipped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox.
“Let’s go!We can make it back to the river we crossed today!” Steve kept Brady on the lead and their
heads down against the fire-wind.But Brady barked a sharp warning.Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of
They would never make it through that. The dog was pulling at his lead trying to
draw them away from the smoke, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him that they were moving away
from the river.
Suddenly,Zach cried.“Zach!” Steve shouted.“Are you OK?Where are you?” Then Brady pulled Steve
down a sharp slope(坡).At its base,Zach was rubbing his ankle.
As Steve helped his friend to his feet,Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅) the smoke-laden
wind.Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared. The boys shouted for him,but he didn’t come
back.Steve couldn’t blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a
clue which way.
Steve and Zach hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came bounding, stopped
directly in front of Steve and hit him with his head, pushing him back toward the slope they’d just
climbed. But Steve didn’t get it.Then Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and started pulling. The message was
clear, but Steve hesitated.Of course he remembered Brady saving his uncle’s life when the dog was much
younger. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this?
Nearby,a pine went up in a whoosh of smoke.Brady pulled again, urgently.“OK,big guy,” Steve
gritted(咬紧牙关).Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Not far from them fire was
touching underbrush.Several times the big dog stopped.Often he changed directions.Steve was so tired that
he just wanted to rest, but Brady wouldn’t have it.The dog bullied both boys to go on.How long they’d
walked Steve had no idea.He was almost numb when he heard it—the wonderful sound of rushing water!

Traditionally, robots have been hard, made of metal and other rigid material. But a team of scientists at
Harvard University in the US has managed to build an entirely soft robot—one that draws inspiration from
an octopus (章鱼).
Described in science journal Nature, the “Octobot” could pave the way for more effective autonomous
robots that could be used in search, rescue and exploration.“The Octobot is a minimal system which may
serve as a foundation for a new generation of completely soft, autonomous robots,” the study’s authors
wrote.
Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled environment don’t do so well on rough
terrains (地形) or in unpredictable conditions. And they aren’t especially safe around humans, because
they’re made out of hard and heavy parts that could be potentially dangerous to their users.
So researchers have been working on building soft robots for decades. They’re taken inspiration from
nature, looking to animals from jellyfish to cockroaches, which are often made up of more flexible matter.
But creating a completely soft robot remains a challenge.Even if engineers build a silicone (硅酮)
body,it’s still a grand challenge to construct flexible versions of essential parts, such as a source of power.
“Although soft robotics is still in its early stage,it holds great promise for several applications, such as
search-rescue operations and exploration,” Barbara Mazzolai and Virgilio Mattoli of the Italian Institute of
Technology’ Center for Micro-BioRobotics,wrote in a comment.“Soft robots might also open up new
approaches to improving wellness and quality of life.”

A.They’re hard to control.
B.They’re too heavy to move.
C.They can’t predict conditions.
D.They can’t behave well all the time.
Robots built for precise, repetitive movements in a controlled
environment don’t do so well on rough terrains or in unpredictable conditions.”

How to start a conversation with someone you
don’t know Introduce Yourself
It’s not necessary to be clever when you introduce yourself.Simply focus on being genuine and
sincere. When you approach the other person to start the conversation, give him a warm smile and clearly
state your name. 3 6 Remember to speak at a regular pace, taking care not to speak too quickly or
slowly,so that the other person will have no difficulty understanding you.
Begin the Conversation
3 7 A comment about the weather or a current event may be most appropriate.Avoid beginning
the conversation with anything too personal,as this may make the other person feel uncomfortable to
continue the conversation. After you make your opening comments, give the person enough time to
respond.Show a sincere interest in the thoughts she expresses about the subject.
Continue the Conversation
If you are building a rapport(关系),feel free to move on to a bit more personal topics to continue the
conversation. 3 8 Open-ended questions—those that can’t be answered by a simple “yes” or “no”—
help to keep a conversation going.
3 9
When you have run out of things to say or need to move on to do something else, prepare your exit
strategy. You may say that you need to use the bathroom or catch up with someone else.Let the other
person know how much you enjoyed talking to her. 4 0

59.was found 考查语态。
warn sb/sth to do sth意为“提醒某人/某物做某事”。
on the other hand
62.or/otherwise 考查连词。
63.that/which 考查定语从句。
填that/which。

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years
old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised
voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat
often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick!Quick!Remove the motorcycles from the shop,”someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a
thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and
crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the
door and along the corridor(走廊)through the smoke.
They were heading toward the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her
track. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he
followed her.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s called Makcik who lived next door to them.Jane
began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Tom could see
many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his
mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!”Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up.“I
know Makcik’s still inside.”She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she
would still be sleeping. She pounded the door.“Go downstairs.Go now! Go!”

Paragraph 1:
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up.Frozen with fear,he stood rooted to the spot.He
comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly.By then, both of them were
coughing and their eyes were stinging.Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only
two or three minutes.Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible.Jane tried to shield her nose
from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door.Tom burst out crying.
Paragraph 2:
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help.A sense of strength immediately replaced
the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane’s mind. She told them Makcik must be still in the room. They forced
the door open with all their might.Sure enough.Makcik was lying in bed, unconsciously. She was carried
downstairs and then rushed to hospital, where she finally came to herself.People in the neighborhood felt
relieved and Jane and Tom’s joy was immense.
