In San Francisco,a large group of sea lions move themselves out of the bay waters and hang out on PIER 39,
which is a popular tourist destination. According to dock(码头) officials, this is the most sea lions seen in the

“Over 1,000 sea lions have been counted this week,” PIER 39 harbor master Sheil a Chandor told many

物) Center in Sausalito, California.
“California sea lions are sentinels(哨兵) of the ocean,” Ratner said. Their population to some extent
reflects the health of the ocean. Therefore, seeing a large number of California sea lions is clearly a good thing.
For nearly 35 years, the animals have been a star attraction for visitors. That autumn in 1989, PIER 39 had just

away by the strong and very unpleasant smell and noise of their new neighbors, while others saw these animals as a
bright spot after the destructive Loma Prieta earthquake.
The officials sought help from the Marine Mammal Center to find a way to deal with sea lions. Ratner said
that the final decision is to let the sea lions stay and coexist with humans. “The fact proves that this is really a

Researchers in Australia recently announced a new device(设备) that absorbs water from air to produce
drinkable water. They said it can produce up to 1,000 liters of drinkable water a day, adding that it could be
“lifesaving during drought or emergencies”. What’s more, unlike other water generators(造水机), their
invention works by heating air instead of cooling it.
Researchers at the University of Newcastle call the device the Hydro Harvester. The device absorbs water
from the air. Solar energy or heat from other industrial processes can be used to produce hot and wet air. After
heating, the air cools, producing water for drinking or watering crops.
The researchers say the device can produce enough drinking water each day for a small rural town of up to 400
people. It could also help farmers keep their crops alive during droughts. Researchers thought their device would be
especially useful in Australia because its climate is dry.
More than 2 billion people around the world will benefit from the device. They are in a situation where they do
not have access to high-quality water. The device is meant to help alleviate water shortage and safety.
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Studies of the technology will be done in several Australian communities this year. The World Economic
Forum (WEF), a nonprofit group based in Switzerland, says water shortage continues to be a problem
worldwide. The WEF said getting water from the atmosphere is a “promising solution that can immediately
generate drinkable water using moisture(水汽) in the air”. However, the group warns that the technology is
costly. It estimates that one mid-sized device could cost between $ 30,000 and $ 50,000. So the group is concerned
whether it will be accepted by the public.
32. What makes the device different from other water generators?
A. It works by heating air. B. It collects water from air.
C. It can be used in drought areas. D. It can produce drinkable water.
33. What does the underlined word “alleviate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Determine. B. Reflect. C. Relieve. D. Contain.
34. What is the worry of WEF about the device?
A. It results in water shortage. B. It takes too long to do further study.
C. It is too expensive to be accepted. D. It is harmful to the environment.
35. Which is a suitable title for the text?
A. Drought Is a Serious Problem in Australia
B. A New Invention Was Widely Used in Australia
C. Australia Sees the Growing Need for Drinking Water
D. A New Device Producing Drinking Water Was Invented

Text 10
Hello, everybody. Today, I’d like to talk about running. We all know that it’s free, and requires no equipment
and the scenery on the road can be attractive — it’s no wonder that running is among the world’s most popular
sports. The number of runners in Australia has doubled from 2006 to 2014. Now more than 1.35 million Australians
run for fun and exercise. Research has found running helps to reduce the risk of being overweight, heart disease and
cancer. However, you don’t have to run fast or far to get the benefits. We found that running just for about 50
minutes a week is OK. This is good news for those who don’t have much time for exercise. But it shouldn’t
disappoint those who enjoy running longer and more often. We found that running every two days or four hours a
week is also good to health. But running too fast is not necessarily better. We found the best benefits for running at
any speed between 8 and 13 km/h. It might be that running at your own “most comfortable speed” is the best for
your health.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司Reading is part of my growing
As Maxim Gorky once said, “Books are the stepping stones to human progress.” Clearly, we cannot do
without reading books while growing if we want a better self.
As for me, it is with reading that my life is full of interesting souls, from whom I have taken in wisdom,
humor, as well as knowledge. What’s more, I have found myself changing from somebody shy to really outgoing
and easy - going, making quite a lot of friends with common interests.
Let’s take pleasure in reading as a means of personal development.
One possible version:
My mother shared a story of her friend who had the same experience. The story was about a high school friend
of hers. He was intelligent and had a good heart, but for some reason he wasn’t chosen for the National Junior
Honor Society. But many years later, he became a world specialist who treated lung cancer and he saved lives every
day. After the story, my mother told me not being a member of the honor society wasn’t going to ruin my future.
Touched by the story and her words, I felt relieved suddenly.
I smiled and made up my mind to make a change. After all, what was more important was that a bright future
was likely to await me. It was time to let go of the painful experience. I made up my mind to devote myself to
studying hard as well as improving myself. Everything seemed smooth gradually. I became the best student to
graduate from the middle school and be admitted to my dream university. Looking back on the experience, I found
the lesson that my mother taught me occurred to my mind again.
