Wednesday
Today it snowed for the first time this winter, and school was cancelled. We were supposed to have a test in
Pre-Algebra, and I’ve been lazy ever since I became a Safety Patrol. So I was excited.
I called Rowley and told him to come over. We have been talking about building the world’s biggest snowman
for the past couple of years now.
And when I say the world’s biggest snowman, I’m not joking. Our goal is to get into the “Guinness Book of
World Records”.
But every year we’ve got serious about going for the record, all the snow has melted (融化), and we’ve missed
our window of opportunity. So this year, I wanted to get started right away. When Rowley came over, we started
rolling (滚) the first snowball to make the base. I thought the base was going to have to be at least eight feet tall on
its own if we wanted to have a shot at breaking the record. But the snowball got very heavy, and we had to take a

bunch of breaks in between rolls so we could catch our breath.
During one of our breaks, Mom came outside to go to the grocery store, but our snowball was blocking her car
in. So we got a little free labour out of her.
After our break we pushed that snowball until we couldn’t push it any further. But when we looked behind us,
we saw the mess we had made.
.
The snowball had got so heavy that it tore up all the turf (草皮) Dad had just laid down last autumn
I was hoping it would snow a few more inches and cover up our tracks, but just like that, it stopped snowing.
Our plan to build the world’s biggest snowman was starting to fall apart. So I came up with better idea for our
snowball.
Every time it snows, the kids from Whirley Street use our hill for sledging, even though this isn’t their
neighbourhood.
So tomorrow morning, when the Whirley Street kids come marching up our hill, we are going to teach those
guys a lesson.
32. Why was the school cancelled today?
A. The bad weather. B. A test in Pre-Algebra.
C. The Safety Patrol’s task. D. A plan for breaking the record.
33. What do the underlined words “window of opportunity” mean?
A. A wonderful chance to sledge. B. A short time to make a snowman.
C. A pleasant break from having the test. D. A narrow space for rolling a snowball.
34. Which picture can best show the mess the two boys made?
A. B. C. D.
35. What does “a better idea for our snowball” probably mean?
A. Asking parents to make the snowball bigger.
B. Using the snowball to enter the “Guinness Book”.
C. Making the biggest snowman with neighbouring kids.
D. Preventing the Whirley Street kids sledging with the snowball.

to the rich man.
The rich men drank it down. Instantly the pain disappeared. Shortly after that, his eyes were cured. The rich

What Are Visuals?
Visuals are the images or pictures that you see in different forms of mass communication such as television,
the Internet, and magazines. When you look at visuals in media, you make a judgement of what you see — either
you like it, or you don’t. How do you respond (回应) to the picture of a sleeping kitten is different from how you
respond to a picture of a roaring tiger.
Why Are Visuals Important?
Pictures are powerful. They appeal to (吸引) our minds, our feelings, and our imaginations. Looking at a
picture carefully can help you notice more details and get more information. You may also see things that entertain
you or make you laugh. At the same time, learning to look at a picture carefully can help you make up your own
mind about things. Otherwise, a picture may make you think things that are not true.
How Do I Do It?
Here are some ways to evaluate (评价) visuals:
Look at all the parts of a picture. If there are people, look at expressions (表情). Look at how they are standing
or sitting. If a picture shows an activity, imagine the movement it shows.
Look at the colours in a picture. If they are dark, they may make you feel sad, even if what the picture shows
is not particularly sad. A dark picture of a person may make you like that person less.
Think about what the picture suggests. Suppose an article is about crime, and the picture shows a young

person. Does that suggest that young people are the worst criminals or that lots of young people are criminals? Do
the facts in the article back up what the picture or pictures suggest?
