Every year, there’s a talent show in our school. And the theme (主题) of this year’s talent show is dreams. I
took part in two competitions this year, dancing and cosplay (角色扮演).

characters they liked. Although it was our first time to take part in such a competition, we decided to try our best.
When we walked on stage (舞台), we were very nervous. Later, we made a mistake during the competition so we

We practiced hard together after school. After five practices, some students still couldn’t remember the
words. Then one classmate came up with an idea. He divided us into small groups and asked us to help each other.
Then the person who could sing well taught the others. Slowly, it began to work. We were full of hope for the
festival.
The day arrived. We had never taken part in such activities before, so we were kind of nervous. Our teacher
seemed to read our minds and gave us some suggestions to make us feel relaxed. But when we stood in front of
hundreds of people, we still felt nervous. We all tried to control ourselves because we were afraid of making
mistakes.
When we started to sing, the teacher looked at us with a smile. This made us feel no longer nervous. We

Liu Xiaomeng now has two mango pits, named “Da Mao” and “Er Mao”, or Hairy I and II. She said that

DIY stands for “do-it-yourself”. These days, lots of people like DIY and are fond of making things on their
own.
Daniel is crazy about DIY. He has so many DIY tools at home, like scissors, glue, paint and brushes. He
once decided to put in a brighter light in his bedroom. However, he made a big mistake. He cut the power line and
put his house in danger.
Another time, he wanted to make a card for his mother’s birthday. He spent a long time preparing it. He
glued a picture on the card, but he made the picture crooked (歪的). Also, the words he wrote were not straight.
His mother said she liked it, but Daniel knew his card was not very nice.

apples. Then she cut them into pieces and put them into a bowl. After that, she added some cream and sugar.

During the 30 minutes, students can walk out of the classrooms to relax, exercise and chat with friends.
In Shaanxi Province, many schools organize fun games like rope jumping, relay races and group dances
during the Extended Recess Activity. Teachers and students often play together happily. For example, a middle
school in Baoji enjoys traditional Chinese exercises like Tai Chi or modern sports like basketball. The school also
holds competitions, such as “the most creative class activity” to encourage teamwork.

Ask a parent, “What do teenagers do in their free time?” Most of the answers may be playing games,
watching movies and TV and hanging out with friends. They may not think of reading.
Most of these answers are wrong. Fewer and fewer teenagers watch TV or go to the movies these days.
They even hang out with friends less often than before. However, they read all the time, but they just aren’t
reading books.
They read articles online and posts on social media (媒体). They get a lot of reading practice. Parents worry

to read. They can find the latest information fast.
However, books are still better. They are easier to pay attention (关注) to. Teenagers understand and
remember more from them. Also, reading books helps teenagers stay away from social media. Using social mediatoo much can bring stress (压力).
Parents can help their kids read books more often. First, they should have many books around the house.
Then, they should give kids time to read. Finally, they can have good habits of reading books. Kids follow the
habits that they see.

Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else’s world for a
while. Reading together with others, known as buddy reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During
the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading,
but also deepens their understanding of the books.
Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, schools usually
pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a programme and has got a great
success.
Both younger and older readers in this school learnt a lot from this two-year programme. For example,
when they listened to each other, they learnt to be kind and careful. This activity also provided them with a chance
to practise lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or getting on well with others. A student called Jason said
that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model
for someone.
The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often met
each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.
Now winter vacation is coming. It’s a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a
book you both like and read it together?1.What is buddy reading?
2.How long was the reading programme in Green School?
3.Why did Jason think the programme was helpful?
4.What benefit did the school get from the programme?

Every Friday afternoon, the school library at Lincoln Middle School turns into a newsroom. Dozens of
students type away on laptops, brainstorm article ideas, and debate headlines. They’re not just doing homework—
they’re producing Fresh Ink Weekly, a digital magazine all written by teens.
Started two years ago by English teacher Mr. Rhodes, the project aimed to improve writing skills in a real-
world setting. But it has grown far beyond expectations. “At first, I thought we could hardly fill one page,” Mr.
Rhodes says. “Now we have students asking for more space.”
The magazine covers everything from school events and student interviews to movie reviews and opinion
pieces. Each issue (期刊) is emailed to parents and posted online, and some articles have even been picked up by
the local newspaper.
Editor-in-chief Maya Brown, an eighth grader, says the best part is having a voice. “When you write
something and others read it—it matters. It’s not just an assignment. It’s a message.”
With new articles each week and a growing list of student contributors (撰稿人), Fresh Ink Weekly
continues to be a space where young voices are not only heard, but celebrated.

Many boys and girls love to watch TV at home. They spend many hours a day in front of the TV set. But
many parents let their children watch TV only in special time.
TV shows are like books or movies. There are many kinds of TV shows, such as sitcoms, soap operas,
sports shows, fashion shows etc. A child can learn good things and bad things from them. Some shows help
children to know the news all over the world. Children don’t have to go to the zoo to see animals. Boys and girls
can see sitcoms, sports shows and game shows at home. Some shows teach children how to cook or how to use
tools (工具).
Many boys and girls think it is fun to watch TV, but it is also fun to read books, to play games or to visit
friends.
1.When do many parents let their children watch TV? (不超过5词)
2.What can a child learn from TV shows? (不超过5个词)

“Hello! I said to myself today that if I did five handstands, it would be an excellent year, and I did!” Thus
began the 41-volume (and counting) diary of my life. It was 1984 and I was 14, feeling my way through
adolescence (青少年时期). Most of the diaries have lain unread since I wrote them. Yet every morning. I hold my
pen and write up yesterday.
You pay more attention to the world when you know you’ll be writing it up. I recorded a pony-tailed
metalworker from Canada who shared the same singers with me and a middle-aged woman in a waiting room whodescribed to me her lively garden. I want to write about even the dullest day because the ordinary things of today
will be tomorrow’s history.
The past still lives on in those pages, and I can feel it closing over me if I look back on them. Recently, I
read every day of my university years. It was like reading a novel about someone else. I read of difficult situations
I no longer recalled and of dramas whose endings I had forgotten. Long-lost friends danced to a Swedish pop
group in my student room, and long-dead voices spoke again. When I closed the diary, I felt like I went into a
different century, a different home and a different family, and surprised at the years that had brought me here.
It’s a weighty business recording a life, yet it has taught me not to take myself too seriously. When painful
moments are written down, I can more easily let them go. Seeing life as a story with an unknown number of
chapters to write is both exciting and frightening. I plan to record the days until I can no longer hold a pen. The
only part of the story I’ll never get to write will be the ending.
1.When did the writer start writing diaries?
2.The writer never writes about uninteresting days, does she?
3.How did the writer feel when reading her university years?
4.Why does the writer love keeping diaries so much?
5.What does the writer mean by saying “The only part of the story I’ll never get to write will be the ending.”?

Surfing on land in amazing style
When you walk on the city street, you may find such a “creepy” scene: people hold their arms out and
swing their bodies around with bent knees. No worries. They’re just a group of surfskaters (陆冲玩家) practicing
surfing on land.
Since this summer, surfskating has become popular among all ages in China. It became a trendy topic on
many online platforms (平台), such as Xiaohongshu and Sina Weibo. On the short-video platform Douyin, posts
hashtagged (话题标签为) “surfskate” had over 150 million views by August, according to China Daily.
“We thought surfskating would be popular someday but we didn’t expect that day would come so soon,” Li
Dezhi told China Daily. Li, a supplier for the Chinese market of YOW, a Spanish surfskate brand, started sellingYOW boards five years ago. “We think COVID-19 has sped up its popularity because the pandemic affected many
outdoor activities like skiing and surfing (冲浪). Surfskating became a fun alternative (替代物).”
“You can see an increasing number of people of almost all ages practicing surfskating in a wide space
inside the community I live in, “ said Ma Yuan from Beijing.
Once a surfing fan, Ma started surfskating a few months ago. “I knew about surfskating from social media
and decided to give it a try. It was easier than I thought,” said Ma.
“Besides, surfskating needs a lot less equipment (装备) compared with many other sports. I can start
skating at a random (任意的) place and all I need is a board.”
Ma joined a WeChat group set up by other surfskate lovers. “It could be very helpful in learning and
socializing (社交), as the group organizer often talks about gatherings (聚会). We also invite people we like to
hang out with. I really enjoy the community atmosphere (氛围).”

Beth Reekles, a 17-year-old Welsh high school student, posted her first novel online at a story-sharing site.
There it got more than 19 million views—not to mention the eyes of editors at Random House Children’s
Publishers U.K. The publishers (出版商) reached out, which led to the publishing of The Kissing Booth, a novel
about teenage love, in Britain. The girl talked about her inspirations (灵感) and beyond in a recent interview.
Q: What made you want to start writing a book?
Beth: I was looking for something to read, but everything was vampires and fallen angels. I was just sick of
it. I wanted something that was teen fiction. So I decided to write my own. I started writing around April of 2019,
and shortly after I began, I started posting it online, chapter by chapter.Q: Beth, do you think there’s a benefit (益处) to being a teenager writing for teens?
Beth: I don’t know if I’m better at it, but I think it’s a bit different to be writing about teens when I’m still a
teen. I’m still learning and making mistakes and doing everything teens do. I don’t have the advantage of
hindsight (事后的觉悟) in all this that an adult writer has. When I wrote the book, I was really writing for myself,
and I tried to write it quite honestly.
I wanted to write the book I wanted to read.
Q: How do you balance writing with your schoolwork and life? Do you write every day?
Beth: I’ve managed to work it into my schedule (计划 表). I always find time to write when I want to
write, whether that means leaving my homework until later or getting my homework out of the way first. I don’t
write every day, but sometimes I’ll write for hours on end, days on end, and I can’t stop. Sometimes I won’t write
for a few weeks, when I’m busy with schoolwork and just don’t have time.
Q: Was it your dream to become a writer?
Beth: I always thought it would be nice to be a writer. It’s always been a hobby. But I thought my career
would lead to physics. I still plan to study physics at university.

What did rulers do for fun?
After many hours of working, the emperor would be really tired. What would he do to relax?
Writing poems was one of the most common pastimes (常见的消遣). Together with his favored ministers
(大臣) or concubines (妃子), the emperor would take a walk in the garden, enjoy nature, and write poems.
Emperor Qianlong especially liked poetry. It is said that he wrote more than 40,000 poems throughout his life.
What a hobby! Many emperors also loved calligraphy (书法) and painting. They not only wrote and painted themselves,
but also had a huge collection of artwork. In Qianlong’s study room Sanxitang (三希堂), for example, there were
priceless calligraphy works by Wang Xizhi (王羲之), Wang Xianzhi (王献之) and Wang Xun (王珣), three
famous calligraphers who lived during the Jin Dynasty (265-420).
Watching Chinese operas was another favorite pastime for the emperor. In the Forbidden City, there used to
be 11 theaters of different sizes. The small ones were used for daily shows, while the big ones were for special
occasions (场合), such as festivals or the royal families’ birthdays. Emperor Qianlong was a big fan of plays. In
1790, he held a grand (大型的) “theater party” for his 80th birthday. The royal theater troupe (剧团) put on a long
show titled Shengpingbaofa (《升平宝筏》). Qianlong watched it every day from 5 am to 3 pm for 10 days in
all. He must have been a real fan of the show!
Toys in the Forbidden City
1 The music box (八音盒) came from the West. It is a musical instrument that can play music by itself.
Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) quite liked it and was curious about how it worked. One day, he took it apart (拆
开) and changed the structure (结构) inside. When he played the box again, to everyone’s surprise, it played
Chinese Kunqu Opera (昆曲) instead of Western music!
2 This toy is quite useful – it’s a fan. The little boy can wave automatically to make cool air. It was made by
the Imperial Household Department (内务府).
Pavilion of Cheerful Melodies (畅音阁)
Located (坐落在) on the east side of the palace, this three-story pavilion is the biggest theater in the
Forbidden City. It would hold shows during festivals and big events. In 2017, when US President Donald Trump
and First Lady Melania Trump visited the Forbidden City, they watched Chinese opera in this theater.
Pets of the palace
Like many of us, the emperors also raised pets. There used to be many pets in the Forbidden City, including
parrots, crickets (蟋蟀) and cats. Emperor Yongzheng’s favorite pets were dogs. He cared a great deal for them.
For example, he designed (设计) clothes for dogs himself, and was strict about their quality (质量) and color. He
also made beautiful dog cages (笼子) with wool mats (垫子) inside.
