Last week, we did a survey of the best places to relax in our neighborhood. We asked about 200 people to
answer the questions. Here are the answers and the reasons.
35% of the people voted (投票) for Sunshine Coffee Shop. The main reason is that it has the best coffee
and cakes. It’s said that the shop owner learned how to make dessert in France for about half a year. She makes the

shop is quiet and relaxing. It’s really a good place to enjoy your time.

screen in the center of the hall. Some music players play live music. What’s more, people can pay to order songs
for others. People can scan the QR code (扫二维码) and type what they want to say on the screen. It’s really
interesting. So many people have their birthday parties in the shop.

no one is sure when the toy appeared in America. What we know is that in 1916 the toy got the name yo-yo in
America.
In 1928, Pedro Flores, a young man from the Philippines, opened the first yo-yo factory in California.

yo competitions. This helped the yo-yo became more and more popular.
In 1932, Flores sold his factories to Donald Duncan. Duncan was a talented trader. He sold yo-yos not only
in the USA but also other countries. When it was becoming popular all over the world, world yo-yo competitions

Lily, on the other hand, loves gardening. She has a small garden in her backyard. Every morning, she

For twelve children aged between ten and fifteen, Saturdays are spent learning the art of cooking. Their
weekly lessons in small classes are so popular that there is a waiting list of 30 children who want to do the course.
Parents pay £280 for the course where their children can have fun and learn how to make good food.
Class member Bill, aged ten, says, “I love my mom’s cooking and now I can do it better than her. The
teachers always make us laugh, especially when we sit down with them to share the food we’ve made.”
Flora is twelve, and she says, “I did a meal for ten friends which they really enjoyed. Then my mom
suggested I should develop a hobby, instead of doing nothing on weekends. I was happy staying at home, so I
wasn’t too keen (渴望的) at first. I’m really glad I decided to come, though.”
Their teacher, Philippe, says, “The students are great, as they are focused and remember things very well.
It’s interesting that the kitchen isn’t always so tidy when they’re cooking! As adults, we’re always learning more
about food. If parents let their children be interested in cooking while they are young, they’ll have enough skills to
make food for themselves when they leave home.”

2.How much should parents pay for the cooking course?
3.Why does Philippe think young students are great?

Most people would throw away the mango pit (芒果核) after eating the fruit. But not some young people in
China. They keep the mango pits as “pets” to “groom (梳理)” them. Many young people like to show their new
“pets” in their school clubs. They also share why they pick up the unusual hobby. Some say it gives them the same
happiness as keeping dogs and cats. And some say they are able to cut down stress (压力).
Liu Xiaomeng is one of them. She keeps an 11-page “mango pit diary”. The “diary” is about the “growth”of the fruit. The process of “keeping” mango pits is not easy. First she has to wash off the pulp (果肉) from the pit.
Then she uses a toothbrush to brush the pit to white. After that, the mango pit is dried with a hair dryer (吹风机).
It will be put in the sun to stop mold (霉菌).
Liu Xiaomeng now has two mango pits, named “Da Mao” and “Er Mao”, or Hairy I and II. She said that
she was surprised by the likes that she got from her school clubs.
Besides (除了) “grooming” the mango pit, some young people even make small handicrafts (手工艺品),
and now feel it is an enjoyable hobby.

Last weekend, my friends Eric, Peter and I went on a treasure hunt in the forest.
It was my first time, so everything seemed new to me. We planned to follow the map. And we searched for
clues (线索) like real hunters. Along the way, we told funny jokes to keep everyone excited. All of a sudden, Eric
stopped walking and asked, “Do you smell that?” We all stopped and smelled something strange in the air. At that
time, we nodded to each other. Yes. It was a mix of flowers and wet soil (土壤). Eric shouted, “This way!” We
followed the smell to a big tree and found three hidden boxes under the big tree. Inside one of them, there was an
envelope covered with some toys. So we used a pair of scissors to open it. Inside it was a note. It said, “Great job!
Keep exploring!” We were really joyful, feeling proud of our discovery.
Even though the treasure wasn’t gold or money, the adventure (冒险) itself was the real prize. It was a day
of almost nothing but fun, teamwork, and surprises. At last, we cleaned up the road and took away the rubbish.
“The forest is a treasure too,” Peter said with a smile on his face. Treasure hunts aren’t just about finding things,
but enjoying the journey. I can’t wait to go on another adventure soon!

Hello, boys and girls. My name is Mary. I am a girl student. I am thirteen years old. I think as students, we
should work hard at school on weekdays. But we also need to have a good rest to relax ourselves. So I always
study hard when I am at school, but on my day off I often do something else to relax myself. I had a very relaxing
day off. In the morning, I got up at seven o’clock. Then I went to run with my father. I think we need to exercise
every day. After all, it’s important to keep healthy. After running, I took a shower and had breakfast. At nine
o’clock, I went to the aquarium with my friends. We saw some sharks and seals there. Sharks are very scary, but
the seals are cute. We also saw a dolphin show; I think dolphins are very clever animals. In the gift shop, we
bought many gifts. We had great fun there.
In the afternoon, my parents took me to see my grandparents. They live in the beautiful countryside. They
were very happy to see me. I talked with my grandparents for a long time, and they told me many interesting
things about themselves. My grandmother cooked lots of delicious food for us. In the evening, I watched TV with
my cousins. We watched a basketball match. The match was very exciting. We were glad when we saw our
favorite team in the match. What a happy day off I had! I hope all of you can have an interesting day off!

14-year-old Leo used to look forward to weekends, but now they make him feel tired.
Last month, his parents told him he had to take extra math and English classes on Saturdays. “These classes
will help you get good grades,” his dad said. Leo didn’t want to go, but he agreed because he didn’t want to make
his parents angry.
Before the extra classes, Leo had time to play basketball with his friends every Saturday morning and draw
pictures in the afternoon — drawing was his favorite thing to do. But now, he gets up early on Saturdays to go to
math class from 8:30 to 10:30. Then English class starts at 11:00 and finishes at 12:30. After lunch, he has to do
his homework. By the time he finishes, it’s already evening. He doesn’t have time to play basketball or draw
anymore. Last week, Leo’s best friend Tom asked him to play basketball, but Leo had to say no. “I’m too busy
with classes and homework,” he said sadly. Tom looked disappointed, and Leo felt bad. That night, Leo couldn’t
sleep. He thought about how much he missed playing and drawing. He also felt stressed because he was worried
he might not do well in the extra classes.
The next day, Leo talked to his mom. “I know you want me to get good grades,” he said, “but I’m really
tired. I miss playing basketball with Tom and drawing. I’m even worried about my schoolwork because I’m too
tired.” His mom listened carefully. She felt sorry and said, “We didn’t know you felt this way. Let’s cut one class
so you have time to rest and do things you like.”
Now Leo has English class on Saturday morning, and the afternoon is free. He plays basketball with Tom
and draws pictures again. He feels happier, and his school grades are still good.

2.What did Leo like to do on weekends before the extra classes?

How do you spend your weekends? For many young people, they go to the cinema with friends, have
dinner out, or go shopping. This was once the routine for Zhang Yiling, a 27-year-old girl from Shanghai. But
three years ago, fresh out of university and starting her first job, Zhang realized that her idea of “relaxing
weekends” nearly turned into “spending money”. If she didn’t spend money on weekends, she wouldn’t know
what relaxing activities to do. Because of this, Zhang began to look for other ways to enjoy weekend life, not just
shopping.
To make a change, Zhang and 26 friends built up The Lifespark Group in 2022. They started a project
called “Make Your Weekend a True Break”. By doing surveys, they found many surprising ways to enjoy
weekends, such as dancing and exercising in a park square, joining book clubs, watching movies at home, or even
becoming a model for free photos.
Zhang herself also began to pay closer attention to the interesting things around her. She found that a flower
shop near her home gave free lessons on weekends. She learned about how to pick fresh flowers and grow plants.
“I take care of my plants and flowers every day. I enjoy looking at them growing strong. That makes me feel
relaxed.”
“I hope that our project can make more people know what they really want and how to use money in the
right way,” said Zhang Yiling. “Let’s go to the library to read about different lives we never experience and visit
museums to learn about history or culture. We can also spend an afternoon looking through old pictures with our
family.”

2.When did Zhang and her friends build up The Lifespark Group?
3.How does Zhang feel when she looks after her plants and flowers?
