Every now and then, we all get sick. Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what
makes us sick. They may give us some medicine to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he
was not getting well. Then he found a new “doctor” inside himself. This “doctor” has his own sense of humor (幽
默感). He saw funny films and read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his
pain. His own happy feelings helped him feel well again. He said laughing was his best “medicine”. His doctor
thought so, too.
The story may surprise you, but more and more people are getting well in this way. So visit the “doctor”
inside your own head and you can stay happy and healthy.
1.What do we usually do if we are sick?(不超过10个词)
2.What was the best medicine for the sick man?(不超过5个词)
3.Why does the writer ask us to visit the “doctor” inside our heads?(不超过15个词)
Dear Lilly,
I waited a year to write this letter to you. A year ago, I lost you and my world was not the same again. It
was a sunny day and you were lying in the sun. I started off to see a movie and when I looked back, we looked at
each other and then I left. When I came home, you died alone in your small bed.
As I took your little body to the animal hospital, I just kept thinking how much I would miss you.
When it was time to let you go, I couldn’t. I just sat there and held you.
I still miss you. I miss when I came home, I found one of your toys left on my bed. I used to think that was
your gift to me. You knew I worked too hard and needed to play sometimes. I still can’t think about welcoming
another cat into my home now. It’s too hard. I volunteer now at the animal shelter (救护站) because I first found
you there.
We only got to spend two short years together. I don’t know what your life was like before I found you, but
I know what my life was like after I got you. Nothing ever seemed bad because we were together. Please know
that I will never forget you, I will always love you and I hope one day to see you again.
Love,
Kelli

My grandma is a gentle old lady. Like many women of her time, she has a talent for sewing (缝纫). She
made all my childhood clothes on her own. As a young girl, rather than playing outside with my friends, I liked
staying with my grandmother to help her sew. I was so interested in getting the thread (线) through the eyes of the
needle (针).
Later, instead of making clothes, my grandmother would sew gloves or insoles (鞋垫) for me. She cannot
be with me all the time, but the love passed by her needle and thread warms me.
It was my grandma who sparked my enthusiasm (热情) for sewing and taught me how to show love and
care. Almost a year ago, I was trying to give a birthday present to my friend. Then, I thought, “Why don’t I sewher a gift? I decided to make her a pencil case. I cut out the pattern (图案) from my old skirt, drew a design and
started sewing. It took me many days to finish it. The final result wasn’t as pretty as I had imagined, but it was the
best pencil case that I could make.
Just yesterday, my friend called me and said that every time she sees the pencil case, she would think of me
and the warm feeling.
Sewing is a fantastic art form that can convey (传达) your love and care.

Do you actually love yourself ? In fact, self-love is a very important thing you
can do for yourself. When you truly love yourself, you can be happier and more confident (自信的). Here
are some ways on how to love yourself.
※Stop comparing yourself with others. Everyone is special, so you don’t need to be like anyone else.
Comparing with others will make you feel bad about yourself. Everyone is talented in their own way.
※Stop trying to be perfect. No one is perfect, so you don’t have to be hard on yourself. You need to give
yourself a break from time to time.
※Have fun by yourself. It’s always good to have a few days just for you to do something fun. This could
be going to the cinema, visiting a place and so on. You can learn to enjoy being alone by doing this.
1.How many ways about how to love yourself are mentioned (提及到)?
2.Why should people love themselves?
3.Do people have to be perfect?
4.What things can you do to have fun by yourself ?My father never hugged (拥抱) or kissed me when I was a child. And he never said “I love you” to me,
either. But whenever I felt sad or lonely, he was always there.
When I was in high school, my father set up a food stand (摊位) on the street near my school. Every day
my classmates and I would pass his food stand. But I never talked to him in front of his food stand.
One night, I couldn’t stand it anymore and shouted, “Could you stop selling your stupid noodles? I don’t
need a father who sells noodles on the street!” At that moment, my father tried to say something but he didn’t. His
eyes were filled with tears (眼泪) (哭). My mom later told me that dad sold noodles to save money for my college
education. Today I still feel sorry for that night.
Dad’s love is different. When I got home from college, dad was always there meeting me and seeing me off
at the railway station quietly. When I was away from home, he never called me, and that’s how my dad shows his
love to me.

For me, my father always stands by my side. He is the “VIP” (very important person) in my life. Now I
want to share some stories between us.
When I was a kid, my father was often busy with his work. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. At
that time I didn’t know why my father couldn’t just stay at home and play with me like other children’s fathers.
All I remembered about my father’s love was some candies.
As time went by, I studied in a boarding school (寄宿学校) . One day I told my father on the phone that I
missed my mother’s dishes very much. To my surprise, when I was going to bed, one of my classmates told me
that someone was calling me. I ran out and saw that my father was outside with a lunch-box (饭盒) in his hand.
He went over and gave me that lunch-box. He was very tired from the long trip. Without saying anything, he went
away in the dark. Back to the room, I cried.
By sharing the stories, I just want to tell you that your parents are loving you in their special way.

2.How did the girl tell her father that she missed her mother’s dishes?3.Why did the girl cry?

All people have feelings. Feelings are reactions (反应) to other people and things that happen. People can
have different feelings about the same dung.
You have many different kinds of feelings. Our faces show how we feel. For example, when you lose
something, your face probably looks sad. When you find what you lose, your face will probably look happy.
We also show our feelings by what we say and do. It’s important to show feelings and talk about them.
However, we must have self-control over how we do that. Self-control means having control over your feelings
and actions. When you feel angry, you can stay angry, or you can use self-control to cool off.
Here are some ways to control your feelings.
★Take some deep breaths to calm down.
★Think about what you really want.
★Talk politely about your feelings.
1.What are feelings according to the passage? (不超过 10个词)
2.What can show our feelings? (不超过 10个词)

Do you laugh every day? Most people do. Scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day on average
(平均). That is lots of laughter.
In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. They aren’t a place for people to watch interesting shows.
They’re a place for people to practice laughing. People get together every morning. First, they put their hands on
their heads. Then they pretend (假装) to laugh. But after a short time, everyone is laughing naturally. They say
they feel good after laughing together.
Scientists believe that laughter is good for us. Why do they think so? For one thing, laughter is goodexercise. When we laugh, we exercise many muscles (肌肉) in our body. Scientists say that one hundred laughs is
the same as ten minutes of running. For another, when we laugh, we also breathe deeply (深呼吸). This helps us
relax. That’s good for us, too.
Why do we laugh? That’s a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often in a group.
They don’t laugh very often when there is no one with them. Many scientists believe that we use laughter to
connect (把……联系起来) with other people. Laughter helps us feel part of a group.
Some people even say that laughter is the best medicine. If a man is ill, laughter can help him get well.
What do you think?
1.How many times do scientists say people laugh a day on average?
2.What do people do in India’s laughter clubs?
3.Do people in India’s laughter clubs pretend to laugh at the start?
4.Why is laughter good exercise?
5.How does laughter help us according to Paragraph 4?

People sometimes think “what if something goes wrong?” It’s normal to have these “what-if” thoughts. We
need to understand these kinds of thoughts and deal with them, so that we will be less worried.
Worrying about the future is a common thing in life. Sometimes, everyone will think about what willhappen if things don’t go as we want. For example, “What if I make a mistake?” or “What if people laugh at me?”
These “what-if” thoughts are all about bad results. When we spend a lot of time thinking about bad things that
might happen, we are imagining the future as a disaster. Thinking too much about “what-if” makes us feel anxious
and worried. For example, we may feel sad and it’s hard to focus on what we are doing.
There are different ways to help ourselves. Angela McMillan suggests making an “if/then” plan. She says,
“For example, if you have to speak in front of the class, then you can take a few deep breaths and tell yourself that
you are ready and it’s okay. Or if a social event is too noisy and you feel uncomfortable, then you can go outside
for a few minutes.” We can also ask ourselves how possible it is for something to really happen.
Angela McMillan points out that most of our worries don’t actually happen. She says, “Remember, these
are just thoughts. The bravest thing we can do is not to let worry control us.” We should try to pay attention to
what we are doing.
Being angry with ourselves will make us feel worse. So we should be nice to ourselves.
1.How can people be less worried about “what-if” thoughts?
2.How will we feel if we think too much about bad results?
3.According to Angela McMillan, what can you do at a noisy and uncomfortable social event?
4.Will the things we are worried about always come true?
5.What do you think of Angela McMillan’s suggestion?
