Anger is a kind of feeling. 1 When your teacher gives you too much homework, or when your
team loses an important game, or when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get angry.
2 For example, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone. But sometimes
you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a
headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s natural for you to get angry sometimes. 3 When
you get angry, you can talk about it with other adults, such as parents and teachers. 4 Here are some
other things you can do when you start to feel angry: count from 1 to 100, give someone a hug (拥抱), go for a
bike ride or think about good things.
When you are angry, how you act can make everything better or worse. 5

A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he or she is pleased with a
grade on a test. People smile for many different reasons. But smiles are more than just a way for people to show
that they are happy. 1
First, it is easier to smile than to show unhappiness. On the one hand, it only takes 17 muscles (肌肉) to
smile. 2 So give the muscles in your face a rest and smile!
Second, smiles are nice. People may try to look nice on the outside by exercising or wearing nice clothes.
However, there is a famous saying: a smile is the best thing a person can wear. If you often smile at others, you
will be more beautiful. That is because it is easy to be around someone who is smiling and happy. 3
Third, smiles have power. If one person smiles, people around him or her want to smile, too. Similarly,
when a person laughs, people tend to laugh with them. 4 It is the easiest (and cheapest) way to cheer

When I was a young boy, we lived just down the road from a public swimming pool. During the summer
months, I would be there almost every day swimming and playing for hours. 1 You could buy a cup of
Coca Cola for 15 cents and a bag of chips was only ten cents. Often mom or grandma would give me a quarter
before I left, so I could have a snack there. 2 That was when I would try the sofa cushions (靠垫).
I would pull them out and stretch (伸长) my little arms deep into the crevices (缝隙) of the sofa, hoping to
find some pocket money that had fallen out of someone’s pockets. 3 Then I would run off to the
swimming pool with change in my hand and happiness in my heart.
It is only recently, however, that I realized I found change there a lot during the summertime. I rememberlooking between the sofas in the winter a few times and not even finding a penny. Although I never saw them, I
think that mom, grandma, dad, or all three of them would drop change down there for me to find. 4 Of
course, they never said a word about it even after I had grown up. I guess some secrets are too good to share.
