My Favourite Free-Time Hobby
My favourite free-time hobby is doing calligraphy. I started it when I was seven years old. At that time, my
grandmother taught me to write simple Chinese characters, and I was attracted by the beautiful strokes, so I soon
fell in love with it. Now I spend half an hour on it every evening after finishing my homework.
Doing calligraphy is never boring for me. When I practise single strokes or copy poems by Li Bai, I always
forget the tiredness from a day's study. It helps me a lot: first, it's a great way to relax myself—the smell of ink
and the quiet process make me calm down quickly; second, it teaches me to be patient, because even a small
character needs lots of practice; what's more, it reduces my stress when I'm upset. Once, I argued with my friend
and felt angry, but sitting down to write calligraphy helped me calm down and think clearly.
In a word, doing calligraphy is more than just an activity. It's a good friend that accompanies me to relax and
grow. I will keep doing it in the future, and I even want to learn to write poems and share my works with my
classmates.
