18.Which pet may an outgoing person prefer?
A.A bird. B.A dog. C.A cat.
19.What may a cat owner be like?
A.Clever. B.Sociable. C.Careful.
20.What does the speech mainly talk about?
A.Pet people’s personalities. B.More outgoing dog people.
C.Less sociable cat people.【答案】18.B 19.A 20.A
M: Are you a dog person or a cat person? What psychological factors make a person choose one type of
pet over the other?
An outgoing person prefers dogs. This should really come as no surprise. Owning a dog is a social experience,
because you always have to walk them and interact with other dog owners. If you really like talking to other
people, a dog might be for you. Cats on the other hand tend to stay at home, which means that taking care of a cat
requires much less social interaction.
Cat people are smarter. While studies show that dog lovers are more outgoing and lively, cat lovers score higher on
intelligence tests, and are said to be more open-minded. They are also more curious about the world, even though
they might not leave the house to see it as much!
Do you love a dog or a cat? Are you a different kind of pet person like a turtle person or a bird person? Does your
personality match with some features we talked about earlier? I hope my speech will be helpful to you. Thank you
for listening!

One morning, Wu Liang discovered that her classroom had changed. She found that the desks were no longer
in rows, but pushed together to make eight bigger desks. She was so excited about it for the first two days that she
couldn’t listen to the teachers carefully. But soon she and her classmates got used to this new classroom
arrangement. “Now our class is quieter,” said Wu. “What’s more, we can come up with our own ideas and learn
more through discussion. It’s a better way to study.”
Li Yu liked it, too. “Group members first discuss,” he said, “and then present to the whole class. It makes us
believe in ourselves.” This was part of a reform (改革) at Li’s school. The school made this reform because they
wanted to offer students easier ways to study and more chances to discuss. “Our school hopes to improve students’
abilities to study by themselves and work in groups,” said Zhang Ming, an English teacher.
However, the reform has demanded more from teachers. Now they have only 15 minutes to give a lesson that
would have been taught in 45 minutes before. It is difficult to teach in such a short time. The teachers have to find
better ways to teach more effectively.
“The reform demands more, but I’m sure it is helpful,” added Zhang Ming.
24.It was easier for Wu Liang to ________ in class after the new classroom arrangement.
A.discuss with other students B.sit in the classroom
C.push desks together D.teach a lesson
25.The school made the reform in order to offer students ________ to study.

27.The best title of this passage may be “________”.
A.Discussion in Class B.New Look in Class
C.Students’ Friendship D.Teachers’ Hope
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.D 27.B
根据第一段中Wu Liang所说的话“What’s more, we can come up with our own ideas and
learn more through discussion.
故选A项。
The school made this reform because they wanted to offer students easier
ways to study and more chances to discuss.
Now they have only 15 minutes to give a lesson that would have been taught
in 45 minutes before. It is difficult to teach in such a short time.

If you always dream of traveling around the world but would rather not give up your education, then why not
combine (结合) the two? Numbers of people are now studying abroad, getting once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences
in different places and preparing for a better future. You can choose to spend a week away, or a summer, or even a
year. You can go to Spain. Or you can keep things simple by studying in an English-speaking country like Canada
or Australia. There are so many options (选项) for you.
Just a few tens of years ago, the options for studying abroad were few and far between. Today the marketplace
is positively crowded, so much so that it’s difficult to know where to start. On the upside, this means you’re the
master of your own future. So, if you’re serious about studying abroad, it’s time to get planning.
Studying abroad can also be expensive. Besides the cost of the actual education you receive, there are also
other costs you need to think about—from flights and accommodation to food and sightseeing. “Eighty percent of
American high school teens say they want to travel, but only 1 to 3 percent of them actually do it,” says Samantha
Martin. “And we know finances (资金) are a huge part of the problem.” Last year, Samantha and her workmate
Jennifer Thomas started Project Travel, a specialist website, to help more students “get on the plane or bus”.
Students can ask for help with finances on the website for study, volunteer work, teaching and other types of
educational travel. This type of method isn’t suitable for everyone, but there are other methods you can explore if
you want to reduce the overall cost of studying abroad.
These are tricky problems you have to deal with, but program advisors, lecturers, fellow students, friends and
parents can all give advice and help you find a “study abroad” program that fit s with your goals, your finances and,
just as importantly, your personal interests.
28.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To advise people to study abroad.
B.To show the popularity of studying abroad.
C.To discuss the necessity of studying abroad.
D.To introduce why people choose to study abroad.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A.There are many people studying abroad.
B.It is not a good time to study abroad now.
C.Many people think studying abroad is costly.
D.There are many options for studying abroad now.
30.In order to study abroad, American high schoolers ______.
A.can borrow money from Project Travel
B.may get financial help on Project Travel
C.must do some volunteer work for Project Travel
D.can get their plane or bus ticket from Project Travel
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Studying Abroad B.Traveling the World
C.Being Careful with Choices D.Preparing for a Better Future
【答案】28.A 29.D 30.B 31.A

故选A项。
Just a few tens of years ago, the options for studying abroad were few and far

故选A项。

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in the moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts. The
scientists had no idea if anything would grow in the moon dirt. They wanted to see if it could be used to grow food
by the next generation of moon explorers. The results surprised them. Plants actually can grow in lunar (月球的)
soil.
The researchers planted thale cress (芥蓝), a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo
missions. The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week the lunar soil
stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants ended up stunted—meaning small or
not fully developed.
The longer the soil was exposed to radiation and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do.
The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth. It was exposed a couple billion years
试卷第12页,共26页longer to the elements.
Scientists said, “This is a big step forward to know that we can grow plants. The real next step is to go and do
it on the surface of the moon.”
Moon dirt is full of glass particles from micrometeorite (微小陨石) impacts. One solution might be to use
younger geologic spots on the moon, like lava flows, for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed
by adding special nutrient (营养物) mixtures or artificial lighting.
Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo crews that landed on the
moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on
Earth.
Early last year NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting
experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was finally right with the space agency looking to put
astronauts back on the moon in a few years.
32.What is the result of the planting experiment with lunar soil?
A.The plants couldn’t grow normally. B.It was difficult for the seeds to grow.
C.They were struck by some diseases. D.The soil was too stressed for the plants to grow.
33.What is the final purpose of this experiment?
A.To create a new crop. B.To improve lunar soil.
C.To plant on the moon. D.To find the right amount of light.
34.Why did the scientists use volcanic ash for testing?
A.Lunar soil cannot be brought back by humans. B.Lunar soil was difficult to obtain for testing.
C.Lunar soil is not suitable for planting. D.Lunar soil is the same as volcanic ash.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Future Astronauts Will Grow Food on the Moon
B.It’s Time to Study Growing Crops on the Moon
C.Lunar Soil Consists of Tiny Glass Particles
D.Scientists Grow Plants in Dirt from the Moon
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.D

67. We ate a big breakfast at a local restaurant, like we did every Father’s Day. The present my daughter gave me
was a T-shirt with the words “World’s Coolest Dad”. I put it on, feeling that was what made Father’s Day so great.
Just then my volunteer fire-department pager (呼机) went off: “Attention, Pocahontas-Old Ripley firefighters!
House fire on Simpson Street. Repeat. House fire on Simpson Street.”
“Gotta go,” I said. I ran to my car and took off. I got to the firehouse in minutes. Another firefighter, Tom
Smith, and the chief were waiting. “Don, Tommy, take truck 253. Roll!” he ordered. “The rest of the guys will be
right behind you.” As the first on the scene, our job was to make sure everyone was out of the house, locate the
nearest hydrant (消防栓), and then wait for backup.
A small crowd had gathered in front of number 907 when we got there. They watched the fire in panic. Thick
black smoke could be seen pouring from the one-story house’s open front door. A large man burst through the door,
red eyes streaming with tears. “Please hurry!” he called. “My boy’s still in there. I couldn’t get to him!”
There was no time to wait for backup. I left Tommy outside and rushed into the house.
“Anyone here?” I shouted. No answer. I searched every inch of the first two rooms. No child. The fire had
grown so fierce by then. It seemed that the roof would collapse at any time. All at once a vision was put into my
head—that father begging us to save his child. I mustn’t give up. Not today, I thought. There still might be a
chance.

Suddenly I heard a weak cry from the next room. Immediately I rushed there and found the boy lying on the
floor in just about the only spot that wasn’t on fire. Without any delay, I just grabbed him and rushed out. A great
cheer went up from the crowd as I carried the boy to safety. The boy’s father, with tears in his eyes, thanked me
again and again. The boy was soon taken to hospital and it looked like he would be fine.
It was a special Father’s Day not only for me, but also for the boy, his father and my daughter. On that special
day, I did what a father is supposed to do for a child. For this child, he was rescued from the jaws of death by a
father whom he didn’t know. And for his own father, just as one of the neighbors said, I gave another dad the
greatest gift anyone ever could. And in my daughter’s eyes, I became a hero, because I showed her that day what a
“world’s Coolest Dad” was really like.
