By chance, a friend of ours in Australia mentioned “pet sitting” and that it is something you can do all over the world. We quickly created an account on a pet sitting website and began searching for options. There were only a couple of sits available in that part of the world, but we tried our luck, sent a request, and to our surprise landed a three-month job in Grenada, so our year was going to be taken up with Caribbean pet sits. Inspired by a Canadian couple, we decided to start our own travel blog. We began by writing about The Virgin Islands, highlighting the beautiful beaches. However, for every photo album of a beautiful beach, there were 10 photos of trash (垃圾). It was hard to ignore the plastic pollution issue, especially on such primitive and remote beaches. So, we began to share photos of the trash we saw and how much we could pick up on our daily dog walks. The more we looked into plastic pollution, the more we realized the severity of the global plastic pollution. From that point, we used our platform to create awareness and highlight ways to say no to plastic and travel plastic- free. We changed our daily routines, our way of living, and even our diets to accommodate more organic foods and little to no plastic packaging. It’s been over three years now and we continue to do what we can. This journey has led us to some amazing places, working with great brands and even organizing a country-wide beach clean-up campaign in Grenada. Our aim now is to keep on going. We love connecting with like-minded people. It’s been amazing few years that was sparked by a conversation about pet sitting. Who would have guessed? 4.Why did the author do pet sitting? A.To raise fund. B.To protect the environment. C.To cover travel expenses. D.To shoot beautiful beaches. 5.What does the author intend to convey through her story? A.Pet sitting is a new type of occupation. B.The Caribbean is an ideal travel destination. C.Travel blog is a superb way to gain popularity. D.Action should be taken to fight plastic pollution. 6.How did the author find her experience in the Caribbean? A.Significant. B.Challenging. C.Adventurous. D.Dreadful.7.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A.Changing Lifestyles by Pet Sitting B.Unexpected Gains from Pet Sitting Travel C.Dealing with Global Environment Pollution D.The Availability of Pet Sitting in the Caribbean 【语篇解读】本文是记叙文。 根据第一段“My husband and I always wanted to go to the Caribbean but didn’t know much about the islands or how we were going to afford it. By chance, a friend of ours in Australia mentioned “pet sitting” and that it is something you can do all over the world.(我和我丈夫一直想去加勒比,但对这些岛屿 不太了解,也不知道我们将如何负担得起。一次偶然的机会,我们在澳大利亚的一位朋友提到了“照顾宠 物”,这是一个你在全世界都可以做的事)”可知,作者做“照顾宠物”的工作是为了支付自己和丈夫去加 勒比的费用。故选C。 5.D【解析】推理判断题。根据第三段的“However, for every photo album of a beautiful beach, there were 10 photos of trash (垃圾). It was hard to ignore the plastic pollution issue, especially on such primitive and remote beaches. So, we began to share photos of the trash we saw and how much we could pick up on our daily dog walks. 根据倒数第二段“It’s been over three years now and we continue to do what we can. This journey has led us to some amazing places, working with great brands and even organizing a country- wide beach clean-up campaign in Grenada.(现在已经三年多了,我们继续尽我们所能。这段旅程让我们来到 了一些令人惊叹的地方,与伟大的品牌合作,甚至在格林纳达组织了全国范围的海滩清理运动)”可知,作 者的那次旅行不仅让她意识到了塑料垃圾污染的重要性,还通过自己的行动影响了很多人。由此推知,她 认为自己的加勒比的经历是非常重要的。故选A。 结合最后一段“Our aim now is to keep on going. We love connecting with like- minded people. It’s been amazing few years that was sparked by a conversation about pet sitting. Who would have guessed?(我们现在的目标是继续前进。我们喜欢与志同道合的人建立联系。一场关于宠物看护的对话引发 了这几年的奇妙经历。谁会猜的到呢?)”可知 ,B项“照顾宠物旅行的意外收获”可以作为本文的最佳标 题。故选B。 C People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds? Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate(激发)similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a major factor. A total of 622 people took part in the study. All of the volunteers came from one of three locations: two suburban college towns in the US (one in Arkansas and the other in Michigan), or the rural Chinese village of Dimen. It’s worth noting that the main language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China. Locals there have little contact with Western media or culture at all. All participants listened to the exact same 32 “musical stimuli”— which were 60-second cuts of instrumental music. Half of these pieces came from Western music while the rest came from Chinese music. After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their heads while listening. Incredibly, people from Arkansas and Michigan often described very similar stories, even using the exact same words frequently. Dimen listeners, on the other hand, envisioned stories that were similar to each other but quite different from the American listeners. More specifically, one track led t o Americans seeing a cowboy in the hot desert surveying an empty town. Meanwhile, Chinese participants imagined a man in ancient times reflecting on the loss of a loved one. “There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way, over headphones. But it turns out, it’s still a shared experience, almost like a shred dream, although not universally shared, ”says Elizabeth Margulis, the study author. The results paint a more complex picture of music’s power. Music can generate remarkably similar stories in listeners’ minds, but it depends on a common set of cultural experiences. So while we imagine music can bring people together, the opposite can also be true-it can distinguish between sets of people with a different background or culture. 8.What is the probable reason for Dimen being selected for the study? A.Its unique cultural background. B.Its close contact with US.C.Its complex language system. D.Its long tradition of music. 9.What were the participants required to do after listening to music? A.Exchange their comments on the scene. B.Imagine musicians’ original inspiration. C.Describe the picture forming in mind. D.Recall personal music-related stories. 10.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 4? A.Strange. B.Individual. C.Outdated. D.Polite. 11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.Unbelievable? Music’s Effects Go beyond Cultures B.Problem Solved! How Music Brings Us All Together C.Amazing! Cultures Determine Our Preference for Music D.Universal Language? Culture Matters When We Hear Music 【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中“It’s worth noting that the main language in Dimen is Dong, a tonal language unrelated to the official language of China. (值得注意的是,Dimen的主要语言是侗语,一种与中国 官方语言无关的声调语言)”可推知,Dimen被选中参加这项研究的可能原因是它具有独特的文化背景,故 选A。 9.C【解析】细节理解题。根据第三段中“After hearing, researchers asked the groups about the images they saw in their heads while listening.(听完之后,研究人员询问这些小组在听的时候在他们的脑海中看到的图 像)”可知,在听完音乐后,参与者被要求描述脑海中形成的画面。 由划线单词下文“over headphones.(通过耳机)”和划线单词所在句子“There’s something about the results that’s really surprising, especially because people encounter music in 2022 often in a solitary way(这个结果真的很令人惊讶尤其是因为人们在2022年经常以一种solitary方式接触音乐)”可知, 人们只是通过耳机来接触音乐,这是一种单独接触音乐的方式。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“People often call music a universal language, but do certain songs really cause the same mental images in our minds? Scientists at Princeton find that while music absolutely can stimulate (激发) similar mental experiences, the results also strongly suggest culture is a majorfactor.(人们常说音乐是一种通用的语言,但是某些歌曲真的会在我们的脑海中产生同样的意象吗?普林斯 顿大学的科学家们发现,虽然音乐绝对可以刺激类似的心理体验,但研究结果也强烈表明,文化是一个主 要因素)”可知,文章主要介绍了人们常说音乐是一种通用的语言,但是普林斯顿大学的科学家们发现,虽 然音乐绝对可以刺激类似的心理体验,但研究结果也强烈表明,文化是一个主要因素。由此可知,D项 “通用语言?当我们听到音乐时,文化很重要”适合做文章标题。故选D。 D Research shows students learn better when they’re well nourished. Healthy eating has been linked to higher grades, better memory, faster information processing and improved health leading to better school attendance, according to registered dietitian Elisa Zied, author of Feed Your Family Right. On the contrary, unhealthy eating habits can negatively affect learning. Researchers have studied many areas related to eating and learning. Skipping breakfast can have a negative impact on learning. A higher percentage of breakfast eaters passed a biology exam in one study of college students. It’s also important to eat a high-quality breakfast. In a study of students between the ages of twelve and thirteen, the average mark increased as breakfast quality improved. Even with breakfast, the brain can run out of fuel before lunch. In one study of students between the ages of seven and nine, having a mid-morning snack improved memory. The children who ate a smaller breakfast and lunch but consumed a mid-morning snack experienced a smaller decline in immediate and delayed memory. Attention wasn’t affected, however. Zied recommends yogurt with blueberries; this fruit has been proven to be linked to better memory in studies. A hard-boiled egg is also a good snack choice. Kids who eat healthily are more likely to attend school. Without proper nutrition and adequate calories, students often don’t have enough energy to power the brain, resulting in tiredness and learning problems. In fact, alertness (机敏) improved significantly in students eating breakfast in one study of high school students published in the journal Pediatrics. A study of public school students published in the Journal of School Health linked high intake of sweetened drinks, such as sugary sodas, to lower scores in math tests. A diet high in junk food and sugary sodas is also linked to childhood obesity, which could result in lower cognitive (认知的) functioning, according to the Yale University research. On the other hand, students with healthy eating habits are less likely to be overweight and more likely to learn well. 12.What is an effective way for students to improve their memory? A.Eating a big lunch on a regular basis. B.Staying away from junk food in daily life. C.Eating something healthy at about 10: 00 am.D.Adding yogurt with strawberries to their daily diet.13.What can we learn from the fourth paragraph? A.Students will have better attendance at school after eating healthily. B.Students will have a good performance as long as they are well fed. C.A high-quality breakfast will make a difference to students’ learning. D.Every student has a strong awareness of eating breakfast. 14.What would happen to students who eat much junk food? A.They would become less confident at school.B.They would grow too overweight to work out. C.They would become unwilling to attend school. D.They would fall behind other students at school. 15.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.The advantages of healthy eating habits. B.The impacts of eating habits on students’ learning. C.Some suggestions on how to learn better. D.The link between diets and health. 根据第三段第二句“In one study of students between the ages of seven and nine, having a mid-morning snack improved memory.(在一项针对7岁至9岁学生的研究中,上午吃点零食可以提 高记忆力。)” 根据第四段第一句“Kids who eat healthily are more likely to attend school. (吃 得健康的孩子更有可能去上学。)”可知,吃得健康后,学生的出勤率会更高。故选A项。 根据最后一段第一句“A study of public school students published in the Journal of School Health linked high intake of sweetened drinks, such as sugary sodas, to lower scores in math tests.(发表 在《学校健康杂志》上的一项针对公立学校学生的研究表明,大量摄入含糖饮料(如含糖苏打水)会导致数 学考试成绩下降。)” 通读全文,尤其第一段第一句“Research shows students learn better when they’re well nourished. (研究表明,营养良好的学生学习效果更好。)”可知,本文讲了饮食习惯对于学生学 习的影响。故选B项。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Weighing yourself regularly is a wonderful way to stay aware of any significant weight changes. ____16____ As for me, weighing myself every day caused me to shift my focus from being generally healthy and physically active, to focusing only on the scale. The original training program is beneficial for me to develop muscle. ____17____ However, thinking only of lowering the number on the scale, I changed my training program.I found that weighing myself daily did not provide an accurate description of the hard work and progress I was making in the gym. It takes about three weeks to a month to notice significant changes in your weight due to changing your training program. The most immediate changes will be observed in skill level, strength and inches lost. ____18____ Instead, I switched to a bimonthly weighing schedule. Weighing every other month allows me to observe and account for any significant weight changes. ____19____ I use my bimonthly weigh-in results to get information about my nutrition as well. If my training intensity remains the same, but I’m constantly hungry and dropping weight, this is a sign that I need to increase my daily caloric intake. ____20____ I’m experiencing increased passion for working out since I no longer carry the burden of a disappointing morning weigh-in. I’ve also experienced greater success in achieving my specific fitness goals, because I’m training according to those goals, not the numbers on a scale. Rather than obsessing over the scale, turn your focus to how you look, feel, how your clothes fit and your overall energy level. A.That was bad to my overall fitness goals. B.Muscles rely on more than just activity to grow. C.I had gained weight in the form of muscle mass before. D.For these reasons, I stopped weighing myself every day. E.That tells me whether I need to adjust my training program. F.The decision to stop weighing myself every day has done a lot of wonders. G.However, when done too often, this habit can sometimes hurt more than it helps. 16.G【解析】根据上文“Weighing yourself regularly is a wonderful way to stay aware of any significant weight changes.(定期称重是一种很好的方法,可以随时了解体重的变化)”结合下文作者提到每天称重的负 面影响推知,空处内容与上文为转折关系,指出过于频繁称重也有不好的影响。G项“However, when done too often, this habit can sometimes hurt more than it helps.(然而,如果经常这样做,这个习惯有时会弊大于 利)”符合语境,承上启下。故选G。 17.C【解析】根据上文“The original training program is beneficial for me to develop muscle.(最初的训练计 划有利于我发展肌肉)”并结合常识可知,前期肌肉的发展会导致体重增加。C项“I had gained weight in the form of muscle mass before.(在大量肌肉形成前,我的体重增加了)”符合语境。故选C。 18.D【解析】根据上文“I found that weighing myself daily did not provide an accurate description of the hardwork and progress I was making in the gym. It takes about three weeks to a month to notice significant changes in your weight due to changing your training program. The most immediate changes will be observed in skill level, strength and inches lost. (我发现,每天称重并不能准确描述我在健身房的努力和进步。由于训练计划的改变, 大约需要三周到一个月的时间才能注意到体重的显著变化。最直接的变化将在技能水平、力量和损失的英 寸数上观察到)”和下文“Instead, I switched to a bimonthly weighing schedule. (相反,我改成每两个月称重的 计划)”可知,每天称重不能准确描述作者的努力和进步,因为大约需要三周到一个月的时间才能注意到体 重的显著变化;由此推知作者停止了每天称重的计划,改成了每两个月称重。D项“For these reasons, I stopped weighing myself every day.(出于这些原因,我停止了每天称重)”符合题意,these reasons指代上文提 到的内容。故选D。 19.E【解析】根据上文“Weighing every other month allows me to observe and account for any significant weight changes.(每隔一个月称一次体重可以让我观察和解释任何显著的体重变化)”可推知,空处应陈述作 者可以根据体重是否有显著变化来调节训练计划。E项“That tells me whether I need to adjust my training program.(这告诉我是否需要调整我的训练计划)”符合题意。故选E。 20.F【解析】根据下文“I’m experiencing increased passion for working out since I no longer carry the burden of a disappointing morning weigh-in. I’ve also experienced greater success in achieving my specific fitness goals, because I’m training according to those goals, not the numbers on a scale.(我对锻炼的热情越来越高,因为我再 也不用背负早晨令人失望的体重负担了。在实现特定的健身目标方面,我也经历了更大的成功,因为我是 根据这些目标而不是体重秤上的数字来训练的)”可知,停止每天称重给作者带来了好处。F项“The decision to stop weighing myself every day has done a lot of wonders.(停止每天称体重的决定已经产生了很多 奇迹)”符合题意,引出下文。 As this year’s ski season got underway, Noreis stood out in the crowd at a ski resort. The man who sent the e-mail didn’t actually want the food itself. He was writing on behalf of his mother-in-law, who adored the dish. He explained that she was now in the final stages of lung cancer at her home in Vermont and that he was hoping to get the recipe to make it for her there. Steve Chu, one of Ekiben restaurant’s co-owners, read the e-mail and quickly replied with an alternative suggestion. “Thanks for reaching out,” he wrote. “We’d like to meet you in Vermont and make it fresh for you.” Brandon Jones, the son-in-law, was shocked. “I e-mailed back, saying, ‘You do know that this is Vermont we’re talking about, right? It is an eight-hour drive,’” says Brandon. “But Chu responded, ‘No problem. You tell us the date, time, and location and we’ll be there.’” For the past six years, every time Brandon’s mother-in-law visited Baltimore, the first place she wanted to go was Ekiben so she could order that one dish. As for Chu, he also kept his loyal customer in memory. “She always stood out,” he says. “She loves the food and made sure to tell us. She’s an amazing, sweet lady.” “She had always told us, ‘When I’m on my deathbed, I want to have that broccoli,’” recalls Brandon’s wife, Rina Jones. They stayed overnight in a hotel and drove the next day to the flat where Rina’s mother lived. Upon pulling into the parking lot, they got to work. They hooked the hot plate to the truck’s power port, and started cooking and deep-frying. In addition to broccoli, they made tofu with peanut sauce and fresh herbs and steamed rice. After neatly boxing everything up, they knocked on their customer’s door. As soon as Rina opened the door; her mother recognized the smell. She was so happy and touched to have that broccoli. She kept saying, “You drove all the way up here to cook for me? I can’t believe it!” The Joneses invited Chu and Abebe to join them for dinner, but they needed to drive back. Chu also wouldn’t accept their money. “It was a great honor to help fulfill the family’s wishes,” Chu says. 词汇激活 行为类 ①接受:accept/take in ②帮助:help/assist 情绪类 ①高兴的:happy/delighted ②感动的:touched/moved
