THE ART OF TEAMWORK
This week we asked Rita Charlesworth, a company trainer and author of several books on the art of teamwork,
how we can all learn to work in a team better. Here’s what she said to our questions.
Q: What ____45____ do people face when working with others towards a common goal?
第6页/共11页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Rita: Most people today, especially young people, are going to find themselves working with others to
achieve a common goal at some point in their lives. However, it’s not always easy. They may fail to understand one
another because of poor communication. Their different working styles can lead to fights. They may not know
others’ tasks or trust each other. They may have their ____46____ goals that don’t match the team’s goal.
Q: How can we make sure that each team member’s talents and experience are fully used?
Rita: First, no one can do all things. It’s important to give people jobs based on what they ____47____ and
what they know. Just like in a sports team, you have to really trust each other to do what you should do. When
many people work on one project and each does their work, it’s very important that everyone should ____48____
their part of the project. But sometimes, people should also be ready to do something different from their daily job
to help others.
Q: How can team members ____49____ communicate and share their strong points with each other?
Rita: I would tell them to get to know their team members. Find out everyone’s strengths as soon as possible
and make sure they build the team. They also need to make sure everyone understands the importance of their part
in the project, no matter how small. If they can’t see how they fit into the bigger picture, it’s hard to ____50____. I
really think it all comes down to the same basic idea: if they want their team to work, if they want to work with
others successfully, they really need to communicate with one another every step of the way.

A team of scientists working in Oxfordshire England, has found dinosaur footprints dating back about 166
million years ago. They found so many tracks in one place, and they have nicknamed it the “dinosaur highway”.
The footprints had been buried under clay in a limestone quarry (采石场). Gary Johnson, a quarry worker,
was using a vehicle to remove a layer of clay from the bottom when he noticed the u____51____ bumps (隆起) in
the hard surface. Experts from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham came to investigate. In the middle of the
year 2024, they began their work. The workers, i____52____ many experts from various fields, students and
quarry workers, worked side by side. More than 100 people spent a week on the site. The work was completed after
a year and the research team announced the d____53____ of their findings in January—more than 200 footprints,
following five separate trackways.
Among them, four of the trackways were probably made by Cetiosaurus, huge long-necked, herbivorous (食
草的) dinosaurs, which could grow to be up to 18 metres long. The footprints are a mixture of sizes, which could
suggest there was a group of dinosaurs of different ages travelling t____54____. And the dinosaurs were likely
heading in the same general direction during their journey.
At one part of the trail, the footprints of the Megalosaurus, the meat-eater, cross over the footprints of the
Cetiosaurus. The research team says this may show that the meat-eater was following and possibly h____55____
the Cetiosaurus.
Kirsty Edgar, a professor at the University of Birmingham, said to the media that the footprints are “a
w____56____ into the lives of dinosaurs.” They help researchers understand how the dinosaurs moved, how they
interacted with each other, and the type of environment they lived in. The tracks will finally be covered up again.
During the work, the research team used drones (无人机) to take more than 20,000 digital pictures of the site. They
have also made 3D models of the footprints. They wanted to record as much as possible, so they can c____57____
to study the tracks after the dinosaur highway is reburied.

Tess had been in bed with the flu for nearly a week. She was tired of feeling sick and achy.
On Friday, Tess’s mom had to go back to work, so Tess’s grandmother, Nonnie, was coming to stay with her

cream. Finally, she heard voices downstairs.
“How’s my girl?” she asked Tess. “I heard you were feeling under the weather.” Nonnie was carrying a small
blue bowl in one hand. A quilt was draped over her other arm.
“Hi, Nonnie!” said Tess cheerfully. “Is that peach ice cream for breakfast?” she asked.
“How did you know?” said Nonnie. “I thought it might help you get your appetite back.” She handed the bowl
to her granddaughter.
“Why did you take a quilt with you?” asked Tess.
“Well, I thought the quilt might make you feel better, too.” said Nonnie. “It was your mother’s favorite quilt
when she was a little girl.”
“Did you make it?” Tess asked her grandmother.
“No,” answered Nonnie, “but my mother and my aunt made it when I was small. This quilt has seen a lot of
things.” she said softly.
Tess rubbed a corner of the quilt against her cheek. “I like this piece best, I think,” she said, pointing to a large
block of red flowered fabric (布料).
“That was from the dress I wore for my sixth birthday,” said Nonnie, smiling. “It was my very favorite dress,
but I outgrew it by my next birthday.”
“What about this one?” Tess asked Nonnie.
“That piece was from my mother’s favorite apron (围裙),” said Nonnie, gently touching a small piece of
cotton.
“She was wearing that apron the day my little brother fell in the stream beside our backyard. She ran out of the
house when she heard us screaming for help,” remembered Nonnie. “She tore (弄破) the apron on a rock in the
stream, but my brother was okay.”
“Nonnie. is there a story for every block in this quilt?” asked Tess.
“Almost every single one,” answered Nonnie. “Now that you know some of them, maybe you will remember
and tell your grandchildren about them one day.”
Tess thought for a moment. “Nonnie, you were right. This quilt did make me feel better.”
