Is it OK to have a messy room?
If you have ever heard the words “Clean up your room,” you’re not alone. It’s not uncommon for kids and teens
to be a little messy because they’re still learning how to be ____45____. But studies have shown that a messy or
disorganized living space can cause anxiety and even prevent people from thinking clearly. On the other hand, research
has also found that some untidiness may be the sign of a ____46____ mind. What do you think? Is it OK to have a
messy bedroom?
Yes—it’s really not a big deal
It’s important for young people to have their own space where they can be in control and be themselves, whether
they’re messy or tidy. By allowing children to keep their room the way they want it, parents are nurturing (培养) their
kids’ ____47____. If adults don’t like the mess, they can shut the door! Children who are messy will most likely
grow out of it, so there’s no reason to make them feel bad about their habits. And cleaning up your room is boring
and takes time that could be spent on much more important things, like homework, hobbies, and friends. ____48____,
it will just get messy again.
No—straightening up is a life skill
Research shows messy surroundings cause stress and prevent you from ____49____ tasks. That’s because your
brain can get overwhelmed by all the visual information around you. A neat room, on the other hand, can clear your

Nidhi Arora used to be the HR manager of a large Indian company. After sitting in on lots of job interviews, she
noticed a serious problem. Today’s young people are very clever and do well in exams. However, they know
l____51____ about current affairs (时事). This is because they almost never read newspapers.
In Nidhi’s opinion, being aware of what is happening around the w____52____ is important. It helps young
people think about bigger questions and understand what they need to create for our future.
So she thought, why not get them to read newspapers? But here lay another problem. The newspapers that adults
read are full of d____53____ words. There was no way they could be given to a child. That is when Nidhi decided
to take action and make a four-page paper for kids, all by herself. And thus, with encouragement from many mothers,
The Children’s Post was born in 2017.
The paper covers a wide variety of t____54____, including international affairs, environment, technology and
history. Readers can also find puzzles, poetry, short stories and cartoons in the paper. Nidhi has m____55____ to put

Slowing down and really looking
In Manchester Art Gallery (曼彻斯特美术馆), there is a small room painted a dark green colour. While the next
room, which shows paintings by LS Lowry, is very crowded, this room is quiet. Visitors stay here for a long time,
often spending up to fifteen minutes looking at just three paintings.
Louise Thompson is the museum consultant (顾问) who had the idea for this “mindfulness (正念) room”. She
says that when people come in, they look nervous and do not want to talk to others. However, after ten or fifteen
minutes, their bodies relax and they start talking to the person next to them.
The room is an experiment called “slow looking”. This is the opposite of how many people usually visit museums.
Usually, we walk around quickly, trying to see everything, but we do not really see anything. A recent study showed
that the average visitor spends less than 30 seconds looking at a painting. If they take a photo of it, they look for even
less time.
Thompson was inspired by Professor James O. Pawelski. He encourages museums to help improve the well-
being (身心健康) of visitors. He says, “When we look at art slowly, it is not just about the art, it is about us. It gives us
a chance to forget our busy lives and think about ourselves.”
Susan McClements, a visitor aged 62, tried the room and said she understood the paintings better—even the
ones she did not like. “You see the details, the colours, and how the paint was put on,” she said. “It gives you a
completely different way of seeing.”
The mindfulness room is only a short-term project, but Thompson hopes it will change how the gallery treats
visitors in the future. She says museums can be tiring places because you walk and read so much. However, if they
are designed well, they can be places of deep rest and quiet thought.
