According to The New York Times, smashed cucumber salad is “everywhere” in New York. Some restaurantshave even added the dish to their menus. 17 But American cooks are trying yogurt, honey, lemon and other
common western ingredients (原材料).
Why is this dish becoming so popular? 18 “Just changing the way you break down an ingredient changes
the way it tastes. It’s cool,” said Danny Bowien, a cook at a New York restaurant.
19 The cook smashes fresh cucumbers with the flat side of a knife. 20 Then other ingredients can be
added. Also, it takes only five minutes to make the salad.
“The success of smashed cucumber salad abroad shows that we should try to fit into local conditions when
spreading Chinese culture across the world,” said The Beijing News.

Cereal (麦片) used to be very popular breakfast food. 21 is very easy to prepare. Just place a bowl in a
convenient area. Next, put the cereal into the bowl, and then add some milk in, so the cereal rises about 0.5 cm.
22 , mix them up with a spoon. Now you can enjoy it.
But cereal is not as popular as before now—at 23 this is true of young people. People between the ages
of 12 and 35 do not like to eat cereal. 24 they think cereal is not easy enough. What does that mean? Eating

It was about ten years ago, on a cold winter day. I was walking over to visit my dad when it began raining
heavily. Although his house was only a short walk from mine, I was wet all over and it chilled (使……冰冷) my
bones. I knocked on his door and walked in. Warm steam (蒸汽) came from the kitchen. It touched my nose, and
suddenly, I felt like I was 8 years old again. Dad was making Nana’s special spaghetti sauce (意大利面酱).
When I was growing up, Nana would make us a big Italian meal every Sunday. She would slowly cook her
spaghetti sauce for hours. Then she would drop in potatoes, chicken, meatballs, sausage and sometimes even steak.
When it was ready, we would mix it in the spaghetti, fix the plates and put cheese on it. It always made our bellies
(肚子) full, our hearts happy and the house smell delicious.
I sat down while Dad made me a plate. It felt so good having a meal like we used to (过去常常) when I was
a boy. We talked about those old times, and my warmhearted aunt laughed over the memories, both good and bad. I
didn’t feel cold any more.
Dad and Nana have been gone for years now. I still miss them. Although my daughter and I both know how
to make Nana’s special sauce, we don’t cook it as often as we could. Maybe it is because no matter how hard I try, I
can never get it quite right. Maybe it was just the love with which they cooked it that made it so delicious. Either
way, this winter, I’m going to make some again.
