1b To the Stars and Beyond
Since the beginning of human history, people have looked up at the
stars and wondered what they were like. Many ancient cultures believed
that these points of light were from gods or other mysterious worlds.
However, as technology and science developed, we learnt the truth about
stars. They are real places like our own sun, and they are further away
than anyone imagined. This raises the question: Can we visit the stars
one day?
The man-made object which has travelled furthest from Earth is
Voyager 1. This spacecraft was launched in1977. In case Voyager 1 is
found by alien life, a special record with sounds and pictures from Earth
is carried onboard. It shows who we are and where we are from.
Now,Voyager 1 is an amazing 23.5 billion kilometres from Earth, but that is still a long way from
Earth's nearest star,Proxima Centauri. That star is 4.2 light years away-about40 trillion kilometres!
The challenge of visiting the stars gets even bigger for space flights with humans. The furthest
that any human has gone in space is only about 400,000 kilometres, around the other side of the
moon. Time is a big
problem. At present, even a journey to the planet Mars will take around six to nine months. What
will the astronauts eat and drink during this period? And how about their health and safety? These
problems grow when we talk about visiting another star. It might take hundreds of thousands of
years to get there!
Scientists, however, believe that visiting the stars is not a completely wild dream. One idea is to
have the astronauts sleep during their journey like some animals do in winter. Another is to develop
much faster spacecraft. While this is not possible right now, with nations and scientists cooperating
with one another, there is hope that the necessary technology will be developed. Humans have set
foot on the moon, successfully landed rovers on Mars, and even photographed other galaxies. In time,

My space dream is that one day a space station will be built on the moon. I believe there are
quite a few benefits.
First, it will be a good place for scientists to cooperate and do space research together. New
technologies can be developed, tested, and operated there. These technologies can then be used to
help build stations on Mars and other planets.Second, more resources will be found. I think the
moon may have some special kind of energy resources that can be useful to Earth. It just takes
time for scientists to find it.
Third, people may live and work there. Tourists will also be able to visit. I want to be one of
the first visitors. I hope that one day we humans can spend holidays in space and explore the
universe.
Humans have achieved many things that were once only dreams. I hope the space station on the
moon will be built in the near future, and I hope it will happen during my lifetime.

Exercise is also an important part of every 6 (astronaut) daily life. 7 (keep)
healthy, on average, they exercise two hours every day. Lifting 200 8 (pound) may be a lot of work
on the earth. But lifting that same object in space would be much 9 (easy). That means sports
equipment needs to be 1 0 (special) designed. Therefore, astronauts can receive the exercise needed.
六、任务型读写
A Special Hotel
Are you dreaming of future travels to space? Your dream will come true soon.
It’s reported that people will have an “out-of-this-world” experience by staying at a hotel high above the
earth in 2027.
第13 / 17
页 共 页The hotel is called Voyager Space Station (VSS). It is like a Ferris wheel (摩天轮). There will be rooms,
restaurants, bars, gyms, reading rooms and scientific research laboratories. It’s eco-friendly (环保的) by getting
power from the sun. It will have rooms for up to 400 people, including scientists, astronauts, and even some
people to live there for a long time. You’ll pay 5 million dollars for each 3-day stay.
The hotel will serve traditional “space food”—like freeze-dried ice cream. You’re going to have the top
cooks making really good food. You can go on spacewalks to enjoy the beauty of the earth and space. You can
enjoy 32 sunrises and sunsets each day.
“The building of the VSS will start in 2026 and welcome its first visitors in 2027. It will be the world’s
first space hotel. We’re trying to make people realize that this golden age of space travel is just around the
corner. It’s coming fast.” scientists say.
1.What is Voyager Space Station like according to the text?
2.How long can you stay at Voyager Space Station if you pay 15 million dollars?
3.How many sunrises and sunsets can you enjoy each day at Voyager Space Station?
4.When will the building of the VSS start?
5.What do you think of VSS?

Becoming an astronaut is not an easy task and needs many tests.
“Do you snore (打呼噜)?” 1 Recently, many people are talking about this topic on social
media. Earlier in October, China started to select (选拔) its fourth group of astronauts, around 12 to 14 people.
The requirements are very high. What are they? Let’s take a look.
Good health
To be an astronaut, you need to be very healthy. Good eyesight, a strong heart and strong lungs are
important. 2 For example, snoring can make astronauts take in less oxygen. This is very dangerous.
You can’t have scars (伤疤), either. They may split open in space. Pang Zhihao, a space scientist, told the Beijing
Morning Post.
第14 / 17
页 共 页Hard training
3 You must fly for more than 600 hours without any accidents. You also need to develop your
muscles as strong as professional athletes by running, swimming and doing pull-ups. You’ll also wear a 200 kg
suit and do tasks underwater for six to seven hours without eating or going to the toilet. This is like doing tasks
during a spacewalk.
4
Knowledge is important as well. Astronauts take sixty courses to get ready for a task. The courses include
maths, English, spacecraft design, physics and many more. So they will know what to do when something
dangerous happens during the work. 5
A.Stay happy
B.Get knowledge
C.If yes, then you can’t be an astronaut.
D.You’d better not have any small problems.
E.They can also do scientific experiments in space.
F.In China, you must be a great pilot before you can be an astronaut.
八、阅读理解
What does the far side of the moon look like? Dark, cold and empty, but it had a visitor already—China’s
Chang’e-6 probe (探测器). It successfully returned on June 25, 2024.
This task was the second time that China’s probe had returned with samples (样本) from the moon after
Chang’e-5 in 2020. And it was the first time that humans had taken rock and soil samples from the moon’s far
side in the world.
It has never been done before. The moon turns at the same speed as it moves around Earth. We can never
see the far side of the moon from Earth. This makes it much harder for Chang’e-6 to finish its task. To help
Chang’e-6 “talk” to Earth, China put Queqiao 2 into space in March. It’s a new relay satellite (中继卫星) which
helps send messages back from the moon’s far side.
The task of Chang’e-6 to the moon took 53 days. During the time, Chang’e-6 flew in the direction of the
moon and landed in a place called the South Pole-Aitken Basin (南极—艾特肯盆地), a huge hole on the far
side of the moon. There, it successfully picked up 1935.3 grams of rock and soil. These samples mean that we are
able to collect more by ourselves. Besides that, they will help us explore the history of the moon, Earth and even
more.
第15 / 17
页 共 页1.When did Chang’e-6 successfully return?
A.In January. B.In May. C.In June. D.In November.
2.How many times has China gotten samples from the moon?
A.Once. B.Twice. C.Three times. D.Four times.
3.Why is it much harder for Chang’e-6 to finish its task?
A.Because Chang’e-6 moves faster than the Earth.
B.Because Chang’e-6 is always in complete darkness.
C.Because the surface of the moon isn’t smooth for landing.
D.Because we can never see the far side of the moon from Earth.
4.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The sample. B.The Chang’e-6 probe.
C.The far side of the moon. D.The South Pole-Aitken Basin.
5.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Exploring the Moon B.Protect the Earth
C.Building Rooms D.Sending Satellites
