Many animals do strange things before an earthquake. This
news may be important. Earthquakes can kill people and knock
down homes. The animals may help to save people.
Some animals make a lot of noise before an earthquake.
Farmers have told about this. Dogs that are usually quiet start to
howl. Horses on farms run around in circles. Mice leave their holes
and run away. Cows give less milk.
In a town in Italy, cats ran down the street in a group. That happened only a few hours before an
earthquake. In San Francisco, a man kept tiny pet frogs. One Sunday, the frogs jumped around more than
usual. They made loud noises, like bigger frogs. That night, an earthquake hit the city.

What animal spends almost half its day cleaning its fur? What animal eats
while lying on its back? It is the sea otter.
The sea otter is a mammal, and it has thick, soft, brown-black fur. On a
large sea otter, there are about 650,000 hairs for each square inch of fur. The sea
otter needs this thick fur to keep warm. Sea otters have sharp eyesight, strong
smell, and good hearing. They also have strong, sharp teeth to help them cut their food apart.
The sea otter eats food in an unusual way. It lies on its back with a rock on its stomach and
breaks its food open on the rock with its paws. It’s one of only a few animals that use tools. The sea otter likes
to eat small fish, shellfish and so on.
Now, the sea otter is in danger. There are several reasons for this. For example, in the eighteenth and
nineteenth centuries, people wanted the sea otter’s fur. In 1913, each sea otter’s fur was about $1,000, so
people killed a lot of sea otters to make money. Today, sea pollution is killing sea otters, such as, oil,
poisonous water, plastic bags, etc.
If we continue to do the things like this, we will not see sea otters in the near future.
