Fresh green grass. Hundreds of colorful wild flowers. Water running into little pools. Birds making their
homes in boxes. The 9,500-square-metre Augustenborg Botanical Garden may look just like any other well-
organized park but there’s a difference. It lies on the roofs (屋顶) of industrial and office buildings in the city of
Malmo in Sweden.
Green roofs are not a new invention. And now they are getting popular again. The common roofs of a modern
city have endless black surfaces with no life or water. Perhaps that’s why a garden on a roof becomes such a
perfect choice for more and more people.
Green roofs are not just pretty. They also help to moderate the city temperature. The high temperatures on
common roofs in the summer can make top floor flats uncomfortably hot. What is more, they play a part in
making the cities hotter than the countryside around them, causing the “urban heat-island effect”. On a green roof,
however, with its plants and water, temperatures change only a little, as they do in a park. This can greatly cut the
costs of heating and cooling in the building below.
Also, a green roof takes in rain water, and protects the city drainage ( 排水) system. ________ And small
animals and birds can make their homes on it. Thanks to this, the city may become part of nature, rather than
something completely separate from it.
While the cost of building such a roof can still be higher, it can be cheaper in the long term as a result of
energy savings. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to walk out into a garden high above the city’s noise and
traffic, whether you’re at school or in an office or just at home in a ten-floor block?
16.With the example of Augustenborg Botanical Garden, the writer wants to explain ________.
A.how wildlife is protected
B.what a green roof is like
C.how to organize a good park
D.what to do with a spare roof
17.The underlined word “moderate” in Paragraph 3 is the closest in meaning to “ ________”.
A.raise
B.check
C.record
D.control
18.Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in Paragraph 4?
A.A green roof is alive.
B.A green roof stops pollution.
C.A common roof is noisy.
D.A common roof increases the cost.
19.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.There’s a difference between the Augustenborg Botanical Garden and any other well-organized park.
B.The common roofs of a modern city have endless black surfaces with no life and or water.
C.Green roofs play a part in causing the “urban heat-island effect”.
D.While the cost of building such a roof can be cheaper in the long term as a result of energy savings.
20.The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.discover the problems with green roofs B.introduce the change of green roofs
C.show the amazing beauty of green roofs D.describe the advantages of green roots

Life Without Plastic is an online store run by a Canadian couple Chantal Plamondon and Jay Sinha. On its
website you can find a lot of plastic-free objects. I have spent much time looking at the objects on this website that
I had never imagined existing(存在)in plastic-free forms.
Now, the couple have written a book, titled Life Without Plastic: The Practical Step-by-Step Guide to
Avoiding Plastic to Keep Your Family and the Planet Healthy. The book digs into the problems with plastic and
tells us what we can do to deal with them. It explains why moving away from plastic in our lives is so important.
As a green lifestyle-writer I have done a lot of reading about plastic over the years, but until picking up this
book, I hadn’t realized that most of the public discussion about plastic pollution focuses on waste and litter, rather
than its toxicity (毒性). While the book does talk about waste, the most important lesson for me comes from
learning what plastic does to our human bodies when we come into contact with it every day.
In the book, the couple also explain the plastic-making steps, how plastic can take so many forms as well as
how reusing takes place. Besides, they offer detailed advice about cutting down on plastic in our lives as much as
possible.
The final part of the book encourages readers to be part of the plastic-free movement by connecting
themselves with like-minded people and groups around the world. There are lists of researchers and artists, all of
whom are working to fight against plastic pollution.
You may have been encouraged to make big changes to your life, but as they say the beginning, you don’t
have to do it all at once. Start with small steps and work ward meaningful goals.
21.How did the writer feel while looking at Life Without Plastic’s website?
A.Hopeful.
B.Worried.
C.Surprised.
D.Frightened.
22.What did the writer realize when reading the book?
A.It was hard to reuse plastic wastes.
B.Plastic litter was found everywhere.
C.People used too many plastic products.
D.People paid less attention to plastic toxicity.
23.What does the final part of the book encourage people to do?
A.Stop using single-use plastics.
B.Join hands to solve plastic problems.
C.Do more studies on plastic pollution.
D.Recommend plastic-free products on social media.
24.What does the underlined word “they” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The Canadian couple.
B.The readers of the book.
C.The green lifestyle people.
D.The researchers and artists.
25.What is the text?
A.A short story.
B.A survey report.
C.A book review.
D.A product introduction.

Kites were once called zhiyuan in North China and yaozi in South China. The name fengzheng came into use
during the Five Dynasties. 26 He once tied a whistle (哨子) made of bamboo to the upper (上面的) part

came into use.
Who invented the kite? 27 But it’s widely believed that the earliest kite in the world was made by Mo
Di who lived about 2,400 years ago. He spent three years making a “bird” with wood and successfully flew it. The
“bird” was later regarded as the first kite in the world. Later, he passed his kite-making skills on to his student Lu
Ban. Lu Ban improved on kite-making. 28
Kite-flying became a kind of activity probably in the Tang Dynasty. 29 Later, the paper-made kite
was invented. Paper-made kites were cheaper to make and then they spread quickly among the common people.
30 The well-known British scientist, Dr. Needham, once described kites as an important invention
that spread to Europe from China in his book.
A.It is not easy for beginners to make a kite.
B.As time went on, kites flew to different countries in the world.
C.He made a kite out of bamboo and it flew into the air for as long as three days.
D.There are so many different opinions that it’s difficult to decide which one is right.
E.According to a history book, Li Ye, who lived in the Five Dynasties, used to make and fly kites.
F.At that time, only the members of the imperial family (皇族) and people of the highest class flew kites.

46.Dear Jerry,
I’m sorry to know that you’re in trouble with your parents. As your best friend, I’d like to give you some
advice.
First, you should stop arguing with your parents and try to understand them. Second, playing too much on the
phone is really bad for your study and health. So you had better make a plan and learn to organize your study and
leisure time properly. Third, it is a good idea to communicate with your parents. You can tell them that you want
to relax after studying. What’s more, you should exercise more and share the housework. They can keep your
body and mind healthy. And your parents will be happy, too. I hope my advice can help you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Mike
