Yellowstone Poster Exhibition to Be on View at UW’s Coe Library
A first-of-its-kind exhibition that focuses on the history of Yellowstone National Park posters will be on
display at the University of Wyoming’s Coe Library beginning Tuesday, February 1.
“Wonderland Illustrated” will present posters and poster-style illustrations of the park spanning from the 1870s

Collections. “This exhibition involves the history of printing, art, photography and advertising over 16 decades.
The images reproduced are found on travel brochures, postcards and maps—many of which are held in our
collections.”
One poster from the exhibition—Henry Wellge’s “Yellowstone National Park” from1904—was recently
purchased with donated funds and is now part of UW Libraries’ Emmett D. Chisum Special Collections. Wellge, a

During World War II, Duchess Nina Douglas-Hamilton played a vital role in looking after animals.
As the war broke out, the government issued orders for the mass killing livestock (家畜) to prevent them from
being captured or destroyed by the enemy. Duchess Nina launched a campaign to save as many animals as possible,
and soon became known as the “animal heroine” for her efforts.
Duchess Nina worked with local farmers and animal owners to relocate animals to safer areas, such as the
Scottish Highlands. She also established a network of volunteers who helped to care for animals during the war.
She organized feeding programs, medical care and transportation, ensuring that animals were well looked after even
during the most difficult times. The most challenging aspect of her work was the shortage of food during the war.
So she established a vegetable garden and used leftovers to create nutritious meals for animals. She also reached
out to the public for donations of food and supplies, and was able to secure enough resources to keep animals
healthy and fed.
In addition to her work with domestic animals, Duchess Nina was also a strong advocate for wildlife
conservation. She established a center for wild animals Scotland, where she provided a safe place for deer, foxes
and other animals that were threatened by the war. She also worked with local protection groups to protect natural
habitats.
Duchess Nina’s work during World War II was not without its risks. She frequently risked her life to save
animals, often driving through perilous areas.Sadly, some people saw her efforts as a distraction from the war effort. However, she continued to work
tirelessly for animals. After the war, Duchess Nina’s work was recognized by the government and she got an

To: Marilyn Sawyer
From: Paul Lebowski
Sent: Tuesday, October 3
Subject: Office rental
Marilyn,
Here’s a link to an office rental ad I found online: www.offices.com/10-01. I think it’s worth looking at even
though the rent is a bit high. I know it is a good deal more than we are paying now, but look at the size. It’s twice as
big as our current office, and I’m sure we can use the space. And it has a kitchen, a bathroom and a reception area just like we have now. Unfortunately, it is nowhere near
a subway station. That is a convenience I would miss having, but it does have parking, unlike our current office.
I’m sure our clients would appreciate that. It would also be good to be in a building with an elevator. I’m really
tired of using the stairs. I’d like to see the space as soon as possible. Could you call and make an appointment? Try
and get one for tomorrow if you can, because after that I’ll be away until next Monday, as you know. Thanks.
Paul

My husband Robert and I had volunteered to help build an irrigation (灌溉) system for bananas in Zambia.
The Heart of Africa Mission is run by local Zambians, with a focus on community development. We were there to
share our agricultural (农业的) experience and knowledge with the African farmers.
We left snow-covered Alberta, Canada in January. We spent the next four weeks working side by side with the
local Zambians in a banana plantation (种植园). The banana plantation would help make the Heart of Africa
Mission self-supporting. It would also teach banana farming to the students there. Students would go on to teach
others. It has done that and more. Through the jobs created, several families now have food, education for their
children, and enough housing. The plantation is producing well and is a source of great pride for all who work
there.
My husband worked hard at building the irrigation system. But the story he tells most often is of the young
man who stopped us on one of our walks somewhere. He pointed to his bike, and laughing widely, told Robert,
“Look, look, it still works.” Robert had repaired it for him. A bike in Zambia is like a truck in North America—
necessary transportation for people and produce. Robert’s small effort made a big difference in this man’s life.“We sure appreciate (感激) your sacrifice (牺牲),” our organizer often says. For us it was never a sacrifice,
only an honor to have the chance to work in a place so far from our own, to be able to exchange ideas and thoughts.
All this happened while living in a beautiful sunny country in the green of the rainy season, while at home in
Alberta, the snow would cover the landscape (风景) for months. No, the volunteer work was never a sacrifice. It
was only an honor.
24.What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?
A.She likes to take adventures. B.She is probably an expert in agriculture.
C.She started the Heart of Africa Mission. D.She used to live in Africa for a long time.
25.Which of the following best describes the author’s volunteer job?
A.Costly. B.Tiring. C.Challenging. D.Fruitful.
26.Why did the young man stop the author and her husband?
A.To ask for help. B.To express his thanks.
C.To show his cycling skills. D.To tell them about his work.
27.Why did the author consider the volunteer work an honor?
A.It enabled her to work harder. B.It brought her public recognition.
C.It made her appreciate her life more. D.It allowed her to experience different things.

Arches(拱门)National Park
Why Go to Arches National Park
A trip to Arches National Park is like visiting another planet with thousands of natural sandstone arches, red
rocks and amazing landscapes, as well as light that seems to change all the time. The way the shadows(阴影)
pass through the arches makes the park particularly attractive for photographers.
Sitting 5 miles northwest of Moab, Utah, the park has 26 miles of scenic road and hikes for every level of
fitness.
Best Months to Visit
The best time to visit Arches National Park is from April to May and from September to October. In summer,
temperatures can go beyond 100 degrees, making exploring the park very uncomfortable. In late summer, violent
storms often cause flash floods, which can be quite dangerous. Winter is a good time for sightseeing, with fewer
crowds, but occasional snow and ice can make the paths wet, smooth and therefore easy to fall on. However, the
visitor center is open daily. What to Eat
There are no restaurants or hotels in Arches National Park, so you need to bring your own food or plan to eat
in neighboring Moab, Utah, about 5 miles from the park entrance. There are several picnic areas in the park, so plan
ahead if you want to eat with Arches as the background.
Getting Around Arches National Park
The best way to get around Arches National Park is by car. There is no public transport inside Arches National
Park. Visitors can also ride bikes in the park, but there are no bike lanes or shoulders, so this is more of an option
for experienced cyclists.
1.What may visitors do at Arches National Park?
A.Have dinner in restaurants. B.Take some photographs.
C.Learn about another planet. D.Stay in the hotel for a few days.
2.What is a disadvantage of visiting the park in winter?
A.The risk of falling. B.The danger of flash floods.
C.The crowds of tourists. D.The shutdown of the visitor center.
3.Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A travel journal. B.A geography book.
C.A tourism website. D.An academic article.

Born in Wuzhen in Zhejiang, Qian Lihuai has a unique bond with bamboo and whether it’s in the form of
indoor bamboo bonsai or backyard bamboo groves, the material is an essential element in his home.
Qian grew up in the village known for its bamboo weaving and after studying industrial design at the Zhejiang
University of Science and Technology, he began to develop an interest in the technique, learning how to do it
himself.
He also traveled widely in Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces to learn local bamboo weaving
techniques. “The variations are quite large in amount across the regions, and bamboo weaving comes in a wide
arrange of forms. It’s sometimes used to make agricultural tools, sometimes to make daily necessities, and
sometimes for artistic purposes.” Qian said. “In Wuzhen, each place focuses on producing a specific item. For
instance, our village’s distinguishing feature is in making bamboo trays especially for raising silkworms.”During a visit to a traditional basket maker in Shengzhou, Zhejiang, Qian saw that instead of using nails to
fasten the basket together, the craftsman used a slanting (倾斜的) cut on the bamboo to create a precise fit that
caused the joint to not be noticed. “I rarely encounter such a level of craftsmanship. He even creates small molds
and modifies tools himself to improve the weaving process,” Qian says.
During his visits, he was moved by the dedication of the weavers to their craft. These experiences inspired him
to return to his hometown of Wuzhen and throw himself into the bamboo weaving industry in 2013.
Bamboo techniques he has developed or improved are now widely used in everything from home furnishings
to clothing, part of a growing trend toward replacing the use of plastic with bamboo, that demonstrates a continuity
of the traditional Chinese culture in which bamboo has long been cherished as a topic for arts and a material for
daily objects that we use in our home.

On November 7, Lewis Pugh completed a one-kilometer swim in the freezing waters of King Edward Cove,
off South Georgia in Antarctica. He was wearing only his swimming glasses, cap and Speedo !
Pugh is an advocate for our oceans and seas, working to protect these ecosystems with their large diversity of
marine life. When asked why he doesn't wear a wetsuit(防寒泳衣), Pugh says, "I ask world leaders to do
everything they can to protect our oceans. Sometimes the steps they need to take are difficult and unpopular. If I'm
asking them to be courageous, I must also be. Swimming in a wetsuit would not send the right message."
It took Pugh about 19 minutes to complete the one-kilometer swim in Antarctica where the water averaged
about 1.6 degrees Celsius. He says that his body can only tolerate about 20 minutes in the freezing waters before it
starts shutting down. As he swims, his body temperature steadily drops, which in turn causes his muscle control to
drop, slowing him down. When he is done with his swim, his support team rushes him to a hot shower and it takes
almost an hour for his body temperature to return to normal.
Doctors and Pugh caution that one must receive months of training to swim in such cold waters. Even expert
swimmers who are unused to freezing water can drown within minutes because of the physical shock experienced
by the body. Pugh says he trained for six months before this swim.
This is not the first time that Pugh has swum in dangerous conditions. In 2007, he swam one kilometer in the
North Pole to draw attention to the melting Arctic ice due to climate change. In 2015, he swam in the Bay of
Whales in Antarctica's Ross Sea as part of his successful campaign to help set up a marine reserve there.
4.Why did Lewis Pugh swim without a wetsuits ?
A.To show his bravery.
B.To swim faster.C.To build up his body.
D.To have overnight fame.
5.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to'?
A.His body temperature.
B.His body
C.The water.
D.The water temperature.
6.What's Pugh's advice about swimming in freezing waters?
A.One should be expert at swimming.
B.One must be used to long-distance swimming.
C.One should be ready to take on challenges.
D.One must be adequately prepared for it.
7.What may be the best title for the text?
A.Lewis Pugh: achieving the impossible
B.How to survive a swim in cold waters
C.Lewis Pugh: swimming for a cause
D.How to prepare for extreme swimming

It was a typical summer day in my small town, with the sun shining and the sky clear. I was sitting on my
porch, enjoying the peaceful view of the rolling hills and the calm lake, when suddenly a strong wind blew in from
the west. The peaceful sky turned dark as a storm approached.
I went inside, grabbing my raincoat and heading to the barn to secure the animals. The cows were nervous,
sensing the approaching storm. I quickly tied them up and ran back to the house, just as the rain started to pour
down. The wind was howling and the rain was pounding against the windows. Lightning and thunder followed,
making the atmosphere even more electric. I sat by the window, watching the raging storm and praying that
everything would be okay.
After what seemed like hours, but was only a few minutes, the storm passed. The clouds moved away,
revealing a bright and sunny sky. I walked outside, taking in the fresh air and surveying the damage. The trees were
bent over and some branches had been blown off. Our vegetable garden was flooded, but other than that, everythingseemed to be fine. I breathed a sigh of relief as I realized that no serious damage had been done.
That evening, as I sat by the fireplace with a cup of hot coffee, I reflected on the experience. It reminded me
that nature can be both powerful and unpredictable, but that we must persevere and adapt to whatever it throws at

EUROPE is home to a variety of cultural treasures. Lonely Planet, the world’s largest travel guide publisher, has
offered pairs of cities for culture-hungry but time poor travelers.
London and Paris
It takes you about two hours to travel from London to Paris by Eurostar, a high-speed railway service. The two
capital cities have been competing in fashion, art and nightlife for decades — but each secretly looks up to the
other.
No one can doubt the grand and impressive beauty of Paris’ Louvre Museum, but if you want to save money, you
cannot skip the British Museum free to visit. Compared with London, Paris has more outdoor attractions, such as
the beautiful green walkway La Promenade Plantee.
In Paris, you’ll see diners linger(逗留) over red wine. While in London, you can try some afternoon tea, eat fish
and chips or salted cake.Vienna and Bratislava
Austrian capital Vienna and Slovakia city Bratislava are an hour apart by train. But since they are linked by the
Danube River, the best way to travel is by ship. A tour of the two cities is the perfect way to experience everything
from 17th century’s Habsburg dynast splendor to sci-fi restaurants.
Vienna is famous for Mozart and imperial palaces. You can appreciate the perfect blending(融合) of architecture
and nature in the grand Scholoss Schonbrunn Palace, and reward yourself with a cup of Vienna coffee, which has
made its way to the world’s cultural heritage.
Bratislava is best known for its fine dining—the remarkable UFO restaurant. You can enjoy a meat-filled dinner
here in an amazing setting.

Sometimes one plus one does equal three, as was the case when McNee, a basketball coach, met Mandekic.
When Mandekic, a math teacher, told McNee how hard it was to get students excited about math at a gathering, he
suggested, “Why not throw in something they enjoy, like sports?” “You are kidding!” Mandekic dismissed his idea
at the moment.
The idea of mixing basketball and mathematics got its first shot two years later, when Mandekic and McNee,
the now colleagues - who had launched a tutoring non-profit - were invited to run a summer-school program for
kids who’d failed Grade 9 math at Vanier School.
When the students showed up for their first day, they weren’t exactly thrilled. Over the next few hours,
Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques to improve their shooting while also helping them calculate theirfield-goal percentage - which, in turn, taught them math knowledge. At the end of the game, the winning team was
determined based on which group had the highest total percentage and had done the most efficient math. “When the
bell rang, they were so focused on collecting their data and figuring out which team won that they didn’t leave,”
says Mandekic. The classes, later named BallMatics, soon spread to other schools.
Later, McNee and Mandekic established a private school called Uchenna. At the school, kids with excellent
basketball skills study all subjects, train at their sport and work part-time helping out with the BallMatics after-
school programs. For the school’s first graduates, the value of BallMatics is clear: all of the 16 boys landed
university scholarships for their performance in the classroom, not on the court. “The school’s commitment to
academics is the key reason for our success. The coaches would bench students who didn’t keep up in class.”
Abbott, one of them, says, “At Uchenna, we were student athletes, after all, not athlete students.”
8.How did McNee’s suggestion sound to Mandekic at first?
A.Confusing. B.Absurd. C.Practical. D.Professional.
9.Why did other schools welcome the classes?
A.They enhanced students’ concentration.
B.They improved students’ shooting techniques.
C.They helped students learn math unknowingly.
D.They guaranteed students’ show-up percentage.
10.What can be inferred from Abbott’s words?
A.Students got balanced development.
B.The coaches cared little about students.
C.Uchenna attracted more and more students.
D.He doubted the education idea of the school.
11.What is the best title for the text?
A.Big Win B.Math Struggling
C.Numbers Game D.Athlete Training

Visiting Ireland? Here’s what the locals love to do.
Find legends on a mountain hike
Walking is one of the best ways to get to know Ireland. “I’ve been walking for about 30 years, but I’m stilltrotting off to find new routes, and all of the walks seem to have stories,” says John G. O’Dwyer, author of 50 Best
Irish Walks.

dreamy castle is like something from a fairytale,” she said. “The fact that it’s so remote and can only be accessed by
boat adds to its mystery and appeal.”
Get lost on a bike ride
“In Ireland, there are thousands of miles of quiet country roads where everyone you encounter is more than
willing to give directions and point out places to visit,” said Ciaran Cannon, an official in Galway East, who cycled

An important person who has made a huge impact on my life is Savannah. Savannah is my twin sister and my
life would be completely different without her. Everyone always thinks it’s amazing to have a twin and it is but it’s
also not. People always beautify having a twin. They say it’s natural to be good friends, which is true, but nobodyever talks about the negative side of it.
People also say things like “Who’s the smarter twin?” As twins, we are constantly getting compared. In the
second grade, she got admitted to a class for advanced students. In 6th grade she was put into advanced math. I
finally got put into advanced math for 8th grade but it still wasn’t enough because by then she was in a class that
was two years ahead and mine was just one. So people called me the dumb twin.
I played soccer from the ages 5-9. I quit when I was 9 because people decided Savannah was better and I
didn’t want to hear it anymore. She still plays. We also played softball together when we were 10-11. I quit that too
mainly for the same reason.
One day when I was in 7th grade, Savannah, our friends and I were at top golf for one of their birthdays. We
were almost done playing. My friend Allison said, “Savannah, how does it feel to be losing to the unathletic twin?”
Allison didn’t play any sports either, but since she wasn’t a twin, she wasn’t getting compared to anyone.
I could write a million stories about who’s the prettier twin? Who’s the uglier twin? Who’s the funnier twin? It
never really ends. Even though we get compared, I still love Savannah and she has made such a huge impact on my
life.
As I’ve gotten older, it has less of an effect on me when people compare us. I have realized that there is always
going to be someone out there comparing us and there is nothing I can do about it. I am growing into my own
person.
4.What is rarely discussed about twins according to the text?
A.The appearance.B.The bad side. C.The difference. D.The friendship.
5.Why was the author thought stupid?
A.She did very badly in class. B.She learned advanced math in Grade 8.
C.She liked to compare herself to Savannah.D.She was worse than Savannah in her studies.
6.Why did the author give up softball?
A.She played it worse than Savannah. B.She was injured in a match.
C.She was laughed at by teammates. D.She had lost interest in it.
7.What is the author’s attitude towards being compared at last?
A.Negative. B.Unclear. C.Doubtful. D.Acceptable.

Sometime in the early 1960s, a significant thing happened in Sydney, Australia. The city discovered its harbor. Then, one after another, Sydney discovered lots of things that were just sort of there — broad parks, superb
beaches, and a culturally diverse population. But it is the harbor that makes the city.
Andrew Reynolds, a cheerful fellow in his early 30s, pilots Sydney ferryboats for a living. I spent the whole
morning shuttling back and forth across the harbor. After our third run Andrew shut down the engine, and we went
our separate ways — he for a lunch break, I to explore the city.
“I’ll miss these old boats,” he said as we parted.
“How do you mean?” I asked.
“Oh, they’re replacing them with catamarans. Catamarans are faster, but they’re not so elegant, and they’re not
fun to pilot. But that’s progress, I guess.”
Everywhere in Sydney these days, change and progress are the watchwords (口号), and traditions are
increasingly rare. Shirley Fitzgerald, the city’s official historian, told me that in its rush to modernity in the 1970s,
Sydney swept aside much of its past, including many of its finest buildings. “Sydney is confused about itself,” she
said. “We can’t seem to make up our minds whether we want a modern city or a traditional one. It’s a conflict that
we aren’t getting any better at resolving (解决).”
On the other hand, being young and old at the same time has its attractions. I considered this when I met a
thoughtful young businessman named Anthony. “Many people say that we lack culture in this country,” he told me.
“What people forget is that the Italians, when they came to Australia, brought 2000 years of their culture, the
Greeks some 3000 years, and the Chinese more still. We’ve got a foundation built on ancient cultures but with a
drive and dynamism of a young country. It’s a pretty hard combination to beat.”
He is right, but I can’t help wishing they would keep those old ferries.

A.He goes to work by boat. B.He looks forward to a new life.

A.It is losing its traditions. B.It should speed up its progress.
C.It should expand its population. D.It is becoming more international.
4.Which statement will the author probably agree with?A.A city can be young and old at the same time.
B.A city built on ancient cultures is more dynamic.
C.Modernity is usually achieved at the cost of elegance.
