The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to
reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions —
poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY  52%
HEATING  28%
COOLING  12%
APPLIANCES  6%
LIGHTING  2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While
technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%.
Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on
fossil-fuel backups.
SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells have cut costs
by 80% since 2010, making them viable in numerous regions.
WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (涡轮机) in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates persist.
“The scale of this transition is staggering,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. Residential renewables
like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple
within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate
adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental imperative; it’s economically inevitable.
21.Which two categories combined account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A.Electricity and Heating.
B.Heating and Cooling.
C.Appliances and Lighting.
D.Cooling and Appliances.
22.Which technology is highlighted as cost-effective for diverse climates?
A.Heat pumps.
B.Smart grids.
C.Solar panels.
D.Wind turbines.
23.What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the energy transition?
A.The dominance of gas boilers.
B.The increase in solar efficiency.
C.The need for higher investment.
D.The breakthrough in heat pump technology.

Many people assume that siblings naturally grow up to be close, but for me, that wasn’t the case. When I was
seven, I moved from London to Florida with my two sisters, while my four brothers stayed behind. We didn’t
reunite until I was seventeen. The long separation and lack of communication caused our bond to fade completely.
This emotional distance still affects me. I feel grief when I see other families enjoying sibling vacations or
holiday jokes. I’ve come to understand that our broken relationships were caused by family changes, poor
communication, and favoritism (偏袒) — experiences that are common for many. Therapist (治疗专家) Phebe
Brako-Owusu explains that sudden family shifts without explanation or emotional support can seriously hurt
children. Favoritism, too, can damage sibling trust and create pressure, even for the so-called “favorite” child.
Understanding the causes helped, but healing didn’t begin until I started therapy. Therapy helped me
recognize how not having my feelings understood led to bitterness and silence. It also helped me take responsibility
for my role in these conflicts and show empathy toward my siblings’ experiences. Experts suggest doing personal
work before trying to reconnect with siblings, and if you do choose to talk, use “I” statements and be clear about
your purpose — whether it’s trying to make peace or setting boundaries.
As a parent now, I reflect on how parents can prevent such issues. Brako-Owusu recommends encouraging
open communication, avoiding favoritism, and creating space for siblings to bond. Even if a relationship can’t be
repaired now, it doesn’t mean it never will. I hold on to hope that someday my siblings and I may reconnect.
24.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A.She remained close to her brothers through letters.
B.She was excited to live in the U. S. with her sisters.
C.She never wanted to be taken away from hometown.
D.She was emotionally affected by the move at age seven.
25.Which of the following would Brako-Owusu most likely disapprove of?
A.Sharing decision-making.
B.Not explaining family change.
C.Seeking for psychological help.
D.Not favoring a certain child.
26.What is advised before trying to reconnect with siblings, according to experts?
A.Going through necessary self-reflection.
B.Focusing on building new family traditions.
C.Waiting for siblings to initiate the conversation.
D.Breaking down boundaries without conditions.
27.What is the author’s attitude towards repairing her relationship with her siblings?
A.Doubtful.
B.Optimistic.
C.Indifferent.
D.Reserved.

The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the
southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the
coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is
called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial activity of the Ice Age. At that time, the whole area
that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier descended, however, it
applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.
As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest
parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. Marine fossils found here are 225 feet
above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.
The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged coastline of Maine keeps watch over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of
these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to booming communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the
largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt.
Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and
very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.
For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbour, has afforded summer homes for
the wealthy. Recently, though, Bar Harbour has become a new arts community as well. But the best part of the
island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two
different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird
migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.
The establishment of Acadia National Park in 1916 means that this natural monument will be preserved and
that it will be available to all people, not just the wealthy. Visitors to Acadia may receive nature instruction from the
park naturalists as well as enjoy camping, hiking, cycling, and boating. Or they may choose to spend time at the
museum learning about the Stone Age inhabitants of the island.
28.The large number of small islands along the coast of Maine is the result of ______.
A.the drowning of the Maine coastline
B.glacier’s forcing mountains into the sea
C.the irregularity of the Maine coastline
D.ocean water’s flooding the mountain range
29.From the passage, we learn that ______.
A.the coastline of Maine is ten times longer after the Ice Age
B.there are more than 2500 islands along the Maine coastline
C.Mt. Desert Island has been broken apart by a 7-mile-long water stretch
D.an arts community gave way to the summer homes on Mt. Desert Island
30.What CANNOT be inferred about the Acadia National Park?
A.It welcomes all the people, rich or poor.
B.It has much appeal for bird-watching lovers.
C.It offers visitors both entertainment and education.
D.It is a border between the two geographical zones.
31.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.The past and the present of Maine
B.The formation of Maine coastline
C.Efforts for preserving national parks
D.Tourist attractions on Mt. Desert Island
D

Like rolling into a gas station during a road trip, whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop during
their migrations of thousands of kilometers across the oceans. The human-made structures attract marine life —
including the sharks’ favorite snack: plankton ( 浮游生物). But experts worry that this attraction could put the
endangered giant creatures at risk of ship strike or chemical pollution.
Satellite tracking of whale sharks off the coast of western Australia shows how oil and gas platforms
influence the movements of these gentle giants, marine ecologist Ben D’ Antonio, of the Australian Institute of
Marine Science and University of Western Australia, and colleagues reported on January 18.
“Think of seafloor features like a truck stop on a highway,” D’ Antonio says. “On a family vacation, we often
pull into truck stops to fuel up and grab a quick bite before heading to our final destination. Whale sharks seem to
be using seafloor features in a similar way.”
Over 14 years, the researchers tagged 78 whale sharks, tracked their movements and cross-checked the
location of landform characteristics to see how these affect the sharks’ routes. While natural canyons and seamounts
also act as brief stops, this attraction towards oil platforms — possibly enhanced by plankton’s attraction to the
platforms’ rays of light — could put the huge animals at risk of being hit by a ship or pollution from oil spills or
discharges. It’s impossible to know exactly how many are being killed by ships because their bodies sink without a
sign.
The researchers hope this finding will help decision makers managing marine protected areas and raise
awareness of the potential impact on marine life when human-made platforms are disused or new structures are
built. “This will become more relevant as developments for renewable energy begin to add additional structure to
many coastal areas,” D’ Antonio says.
32.Why do whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop?
A.To admire the man-made structures.
B.To get food attracted by the platforms.
C.To attract other species of marine life.
D.To attack ships stopping at the place.
33.What risk can whale sharks meet when approaching oil and gas platforms?
A.Colliding with ships.
B.Missing their snacks.
C.Being hunted by people.
D.Being disturbed by tourists.
34.Why is it impossible to know exactly how many whale sharks are killed by ships?
A.Their bodies are quickly eaten by predators.
B.Their bodies sink without leaving a trace.
C.Ship strikes are rarely reported by sailors.
D.Tracking devices fail to record fatal collisions.
35.What role do the researchers hope this finding will play?
A.Promote the economy of coastal cities.
B.Improve the stability of the gas platforms.
C.Assist decision makers with structure planning.
D.Help countries to upgrade energy structures.

Professional organizer Breaks Down Her Unusual Job
In 2014, Kayleen Kelly took her professional organizing business full-time. She thought she was starting a
business that would consist mostly of making messy homes into “beautiful homes” and taking before and after
photos. 36
You often think primarily of the type of professional organizer who focuses directly on arranging a beautiful
and pleasing space—even one that looks good on Instagram. However, many people who seek out Kelly’s service
are struggling with mental health issues, injuries, illness, or are experiencing the death of a loved one. 37
They might not have the mental energy for the projects.
In 2020, Kelly took her experience online in order to help people globally. Her content breaks down her tips
and tricks for viewers looking to tidy up their lives. 38 Kelly does all the physical labor of collecting
garbage, sorting other items accordingly, cutting out unwanted items and finally, containing what is left (the four
steps of the Declutter Core Method) for her clients herself. 39 That is to make the decisions of what to
cut and what to clear out.
While Kelly’s job is demanding, what keeps her going is the emotional shift she sees in clients. “When I
meet these people, they are saying, ‘Come rescue me, I’m dying,’” she says. “ 40 You can’t beat that.
That’s what keeps me coming back.”
A.Kelly has a large following on social media.
B.I see the look on their face at the end of the session.
C.These include what she names “Declutter Core” method.
D.But she soon realized her job was more about the people.
E.There is a lot of shame and prejudice around having messes.
F.They are willing to tidy up but might not know where to start.
G.So they can save mental energy for the toughest part of the job.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Atbai Desert, a part of the Sahara Desert, is one of the 56 (dry) places on Earth, with a sandy
and barren landscape that averages zero millimeters of rainfall each year. So, archaeologists were surprised when
they discovered rock art showing boats and cattle in an area 57 is 60 miles away from the closest body of
water.
“It was surprising to find cattle 58 (carve) on desert rock walls as they require plenty of water and
wide-open grassland, and would not survive in Sahara today,” said Julien Cooper, an archaeologist from Macquarie
University. “The discovery of boat 59 (image) in the rock art this distant from lakes and rivers was also
surprising.”
Archaeologists believe the discovery provides clear evidence supporting the theory of 60 once
“Green Sahara” around 3,000 B.C. E. During this period, the area was a grassy plain with lakes and rivers
61 (sustain) a variety of wildlife and human activities such as cattle herding. However, changes in African
monsoon ( 季风) patterns transformed the Sahara 62 the barren desert we know today. 63

(current), only hardy animals like camels and goats can survive there.
The rock art’s detailed carvings suggest that the creators spent plenty of time in the area, further indicating
that the region 64 (be) once supportive of human life. As the climate grew unforgiving many residents
were forced to migrate closer to the Nile, contributing to the formation of early urban states and culture in Egypt
and Nubia. The discovery offers valuable insight into the changes that 65 (occur) in the Sahara over
the past thousands of years.

I hopped off the school bus, hitting the ground at a dead run, dropped my book bag at the house door and ran
down to the barnyard. I couldn’t wait to touch the little horse and continue the training. He was coming along so
well!
My mother bought the horse as my 14th birthday gift. He was of unknown breeding, and a non-extraordinary
brown color. The first time I caught his big, dark eyes with mine, I knew he was special. My mother was happy to
see the two of us quickly bonded. As we progressed, his potential consumed me. He wasn’t my first horse, but the
first one I took on as a project and my first time to train a horse under saddle (马鞍).
However, my grin quickly faded into a confused frown as the little horse was no where to be seen. Panic
surged through me. Where was my boy? Had something terrible happened? On the verge of tears, I dashed back to
the kitchen for my mother, desperate for an answer.
“Mom! Where’s ToiBoi? I can’t find him anywhere!” My mother looked up from her chores as I burst
through the door. “Oh, sweetie, come here,” she said, reaching out to pull me to her side.
“I have some news,” she began slowly. “You know how much we love and believe in you, and how proud we
are of how far you and ToiBoi have come. But today something unexpected happened.”
I stared at her, my mind racing with possibilities. “What happened, Mom? Is he hurt?”
“No, no,” she assured me quickly. “He is not hurt. But there was an opportunity. A trainer came by this
afternoon looking for promising young horses. He took ToiBoi to his training ground for test. He was very
impressed and promised to give ToiBoi professional training. It’s your horse. So I need you to make a choice for
ToiBoi today.”
