China’s “Little People’s Kingdom” is a theme park, where little people dance and sing in
fairytale costumes, drawing both curious groups and criticism. The theme park, near Kunming City
in Yunnan Province, employs 108 dwarfs (矮子) from across the country, who gather on an
artificial hillside twice a day to dance and sing for tourists. And all pretend to live in a tiny hilltop
village.
The guests can watch shows like comedies, group dance and acrobatics (杂技).The show’s
centerpiece, a funny performance of Swan Lake, sees performers dressed in special pink
costumes and pretending to be little swans.“The first time I performed it (Swan Lake) I felt a bit
embarrassed.I had never worn a skirt like that before.But later,once I got used to it,I found I
could do it very well,” said Chen Ruan,21, from Hunan Province who joined the park when it
opened.
For many of the employees, the park offers a rare opportunity to find work.As unlikely as it
seems for men and women doing daily funny performances of Swan Lake, they think that it
feels good to live in dormitories that look like caves while living with people with similar
experiences. In addition, the life facilities in the park are made according to their special needs.
Besides, performers in the park earn 2,000 yuan a month, around twice the salary of a high school
graduate.
The founder of the park, Chen Ming, made his fortune by producing electronics and
investing, but said he had always wanted to help the disadvantaged groups in the
community.People, like human right activists for the disabled, think that such a park only
encourages the discrimination against little people. The only requirement for participants to be
employed at the theme park is to be shorter than 51 inches and be able to take care of themselves
in daily life. The youngest employee is 18, and the oldest is 48.

Many of the New World supermarkets in New Zealand are letting their fruits and vegetables
go packaging-free. In an innovative project pioneered by the New World supermarket located at
Bishopdale in Christchurch, this change has led to an amazing increase in sales according to The
New Zealand Herald. “We monitor them year on year and after we introduced the idea, we noticed
sales of spring onions, for example, had increased by 300 percent,” Bishopdale’s owner Nigel
Bond told NZ Herald. “There may have been other factors at play, but we noticed similar increases
in other vegetables.” Bond explained, “When we first set up the new shelving, our customers were
blown away. It reminded me of when I was a kid going to the fruiterer with my Dad, you could
smell the fresh oranges and spring onions. By wrapping products in plastic, we sanitize and keep
people away from this experience; it was a huge regret for us.”
This new project is part of the movement to do away with all single-use plastic packaging.
There are actually government regulations that went into effect on July 1, 2019 for a phase out(强
制逐步淘汰) of plastic bags by all retailers. Plastics take up as much as 20 percent of New
Zealand’s landfill space to 252,000 tons per year.
The idea for the unwrapped produce came from Bond. He went on a study tour in the US and
was impressed by the sales at Whole Foods. Then he spoke to growers and suppliers who were
more than happy to look at different ways to provide produce without the plastic packaging.
Now, most of the produce is plastic-free but some items — including grapes and some
tomatoes — still come wrapped in plastic. Nine New World supermarkets in the South Island have
followed the Bishopdale’s stores example. And New World is testing another new way to
BYO(=bring your own) containers for the meat and seafood departments. All of this is a part of
the supermarket chain commitment to sustainable practices.
8. What’s the result of making vegetables go packaging-free?
A. An innovative project was carried out.
B. More vegetables have been sold.
C. Nigel Bond monitored sales stricter.
D. Other factors were found to play the role.
9. Which of the following is the content of regulations going into effect in 2019?

B. Limiting the development of retailers.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂C. Stopping using plastic bags gradually.
D. Building more New Zealand’s landfill space.
10. What made Bond have the idea for the unwrapped produce?
A. Whole Foods’ sales.
B. His study in the college.
C. His impression from work.
D. Growers and suppliers’ requirements.
11. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. New World’s Fruits and Vegetables Going Packaging-Free
B. New Zealand’s Supermarkets Calling for Environmental Protection
C. New Zealand’s Contribution to Reducing the Use of Plastics
D. New World’s Supermarkets’ New Ways to Promote Sales

Scientists in Western Australia claim to have made a new discovery—they have found gold in the
leaves and branches of trees. The researchers believe that the trees suck up the gold from deep
underground, over 30 metres down. The discovery has been described as the first of its kind in the
world. Australian gold exploration companies are pleased because it will make finding gold
cheaper. Rather than drilling(钻孔) deep holes to find gold, they have more ways to examine tree
leaves and branches. There is only a small amount of gold in the leaves. It would take 500 trees to
make one gold ring. The gold is found using a special X-ray machine. A pure X-ray and a
powerful microscope scan the leaves and branches.
The claim that this is the first time that gold particles(微粒) have been found in living
material might not be true, though. Ancient Chinese wisdom understood the connection between
plants and the precious stones and minerals underneath them. They used plant life to find minerals
and that was thousands of years ago. In the Zhou Dynasty, it was written in a book that a certain
plant grew only near deposits(沉淀) of gold. Over the next 2,000 years, Chinese people wrote
about different plants and how they grew, showed where minerals and precious stones such as
jade, copper, lead, silver and gold were.
Even more importantly, in the 1000s, Su Song described how copper, gold, silver, lead and
tin were observed and taken from certain plants. These were amazing scientific discoveries.
Meanwhile, this knowledge was unknown in the rest of the world until about the year 1600. That
was when a British man realised that oak trees grew larger and greener where there was alum(明

12. What can be inferred from paragraph 1?
A. A large amount of gold exists in leaves.
B. Drilling holes is the only way to find gold.
C. The trees can absorb gold from deep underground.
D. Scientists have found gold 30 metres below underground.
13. How do scientists find gold in the leaves?
A. By drilling deep holes.
B. By using a special X-ray machine.
C. By referring to ancient books.
D. By observing the leaves carefully.
14. Who first discovered there was connection between plants and minerals?
A. Su Song. B. A British man.
C. Australian scientists. D. Ancient Chinese people.
15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To introduce great scientists in ancient times.
B. To show how ancient people got gold from plants.
C. To provide more evidence to support the author’s opinion.
D. To prove ancient Chinese are cleverer than modern scientists.
